About the journal
The Journal of Clinical Investigation (JCI) is a general-interest biomedical journal with a broad print and online readership.Among top-tier research journals, the JCI is alone in providing barrier-free access, without delay, to all of its content online, and it has done so since the journal established itself online in 1996.In addition, the JCI participates in Pubmed Central, a journalcontent repository maintained by the National Library of Medicine (which created MEDLINE-PubMed); this participation simplifies access to JCI articles and ensures long-term utility and retrievability of research published in the journal. The JCI is the publication of the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) and has been published continuously since 1924. These instructions are separated into five sections, each of which should be read carefully by authors before submitting their work to the JCI: Scope of publication Manuscript submission Policies Manuscript preparation and format Accepted manuscripts
Instructions to Authors
TopAuthor GuidelinesGeneral
The European Journal of Clinical Investigation (EJCI) publishes papers in the field of biology, physiology and mechanisms of human disease; such studies may have been done in vitro or in animals. The journal publishes six types of manuscript: full papers, editorials, commentaries, reviews, short reports and correspondence. Articles and other text material in the EJCI represent the opinions of the authors and do not reflect the opinions, official policy, or recommendations of the European Society of Clinical Investigation, the editors, the publisher, or the institution with which the author is affiliated, unless the contrary is specified.
Copyright: All submitted manuscripts must be accompanied by a completed Exclusive Licence Form or an OnlineOpen Form (see below). The publishers will not refuse any reasonable request by the author for permission to reproduce any of his or her contributions to the EJCI. Articles and other text material in the EJCI represent the opinions of the authors and do not reflect the opinions, official policy, or recommendations of EJCI, the editors, the publisher, or the institution with which the author is affiliated, unless the contrary is specified.
OnlineOpen Authors may wish to take advantage of the OnlineOpen service. OnlineOpen is a pay-to-publish service from Blackwell that offers authors whose papers are accepted for publication the opportunity to pay up-front for their manuscript to become open access (i.e. free for all to view and download). Each OnlineOpen article will be subject to a one-off fee of $3000 to be met by or on behalf of the Author in advance of publication. Upon online publication, the article (both full-text and PDF versions) will be available to all for viewing and download free of charge. The print version of the article will also be branded as OnlineOpen and will draw attention to the fact that the paper can be downloaded for free. If you wish your paper to be OnlineOpen you are required to complete the combined payment and copyright licence form. OnlineOpen form
Reports on biomedical research involving human subjects must include a statement that informed consent was obtained from each subject or subject's guardian and from the Institutional Review Board.
Manuscripts
The journal prefers to receive all manuscript submissions electronically. To submit a manuscript, please follow the instructions below.
Word 2007 Please note that Word 2007 is not yet compatible with journal production systems. Unfortunately, the journal cannot accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents until such time as a stable production version is released. Please use Word's 'Save As' option to save your document as an older (.doc) file type.
Getting Started
1. Point your web browser to the journal's Manuscript Central homepage (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ejci). 2. Log-in (click the 'Create Account' option if you are a first-time user of Manuscript Central) and select 'Author Center'.
Submitting Your Manuscript
3. After you have logged in, click the 'Submit a Manuscript' link in the menu bar; enter data and answer questions as appropriate, clicking the 'Next' button on each screen to save your work and advance to the next screen, as necessary. 4. You are required to upload your files. Click on the 'Browse' button and locate the file on your computer, and select the designation of each file in the drop down next to the Browse button. When you have selected all files you wish to upload, click the 'Upload Files' button. 5. Review your submission (in both PDF and HTML formats) before sending to the Journal. Click the 'Submit' button when you are finished reviewing.
You may suspend a submission at any phase before clicking the 'Submit' button and save it to submit later. After submission, you will receive a confirmation e-mail. You can also access Manuscript Central any time to check the status of your manuscript. The Journal will inform you by e-mail once a decision has been made.
The first page of the manuscript should contain the following information: title of the report (no more than 70 characters); the authors' names and institution(s); the name, address, phone and fax numbers and E-mail address of the corresponding author; a running head (not exceeding 40 characters); acknowledgments; and a word-character count of the complete text.
The second page of the manuscript should contain a structured abstract not exceeding 250 words, and a maximum of six keywords. Abstracts should be organized and formatted according to the following headings: Background, Materials and methods, Results, and Conclusions. Authors may substitute 'Materials and methods' for 'Design'. The text of research manuscripts should be as concise as possible (not more than 2500 words, not including abstracts or references) and have clearly identified sections: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion.
Illustrations
Each figure should have a legend, and these should be listed together on a separate sheet. In the full-text online edition of the journal, figure legends may be truncated in abbreviated links to the full screen version. Therefore, the first 100 characters of any legend should inform the reader of key aspects of the figure. We would like to receive your artwork in electronic form. Please save vector graphics (e.g. half-tones) in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF). Ideally, vector graphics that have been saved in metafile (.WMF) or pict (.PICT) format should be embedded within the body of the text file. Detailed information on our digital illustration standards is available on the Blackwell Publishing website at: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor/illustration.asp.
Colour illustrations are also welcome and published free of charge.
Tables
Tables must be numbered in sequence with Arabic numerals and should be typed double-spaced on a separate page with the title centred at the top. They should be self-explanatory. Any footnotes should appear on the same sheet.
Referencs in Articles We recommend the use of a tool such as EndNote or Reference Manager for reference management and formatting. EndNote reference styles can be searched for here: http://www.endnote.com/support/enstyles.asp and Reference Manager reference styles can be searched for here: http://www.refman.com/support/rmstyles.asp.
References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text, and should appear as numbers in square brackets. The reference list should show the references in numerical order. Work that has not been accepted for publication and personal communications should not appear in the reference list. List 6 authors, followed by "et al" if the number exceeds 6. An example of a correct reference is given below:
1 Parkin DM, Clayton D, Black RJ, Masuyer E, Friedl HP, Ivanov E, et al. Childhood leukaemia in Europe after Chernobyl: 5 year follow-up. Br J Cancer 1996;73:1006-12.
Abbreviations
Abbreviations are discouraged and should not appear in the title or abstract. All abbreviations must be defined at the first mention and should be coined only for unwieldy names that occur frequently.
Note to NIH Grantees Pursuant to NIH mandate, Wiley-Blackwell will post the accepted version of contributions authored by NIH grant-holders to PubMed Central upon acceptance. This accepted version will be made publicaly available 12 months after publication. For further information, see www.wiley.com/go/nihmandate
Editorials, Commentaries, Review Articles
Editorials, commentaries and reviews may be solicited by the Editor. Unsolicited reviews and commentaries will also be considered. These manuscripts must be prepared in a manner appropriate for other papers and will be reviewed as original articles submitted for consideration.
Short Communications
Concise papers (not exceeding 1500 words) which serve a similar purpose as full articles. Short reports may describe early results or preliminary results.
Letters to the Editor
Letters to the Editor are welcomed and will be published, if suitable, after appropriate reviewing. They should be typewritten or printed, double-spaced, preferably no longer than 500 words, and submitted in triplicate. Letters may be condensed at the Editor's discretion.
Suggestions for reviewers
The EJCI is a peer-reviewed journal. Authors must suggest in their covering letter the names, addresses, telephone and fax numbers and email address of at least three reviewers with appropriate expertize. These individuals should not be involved in the work of the authors in any possible way for the last three years. In addition, any reviewers that the authors would prefer to exclude should be listed with the reason for exclusion.
Proofs
The corresponding author will receive an e-mail alert containing a link to a web site. A working e-mail address must therefore be provided for the corresponding author. The proof can be downloaded as a PDF (portable document format) file from this site. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following web site: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Hard copy proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available. Excessive changes made by the author in the proofs, excluding typesetting errors, will be charged separately.
Corrected page proofs should be returned to the publisher within three days of receipt.
Offprints
The corresponding author will automatically receive a free PDF offprint by e-mail. Additional offprints can be ordered on the offprint order form, which accompanies the proofs. The corresponding author will also receive one contributor copy of the printed issue in which the article is published.
OnlineEarly 2007 European Journal of Clinical Investigation is covered by Blackwell Publishing's OnlineEarly service. OnlineEarly articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. OnlineEarly articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors' final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of OnlineEarly articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue of page numbers, so OnlineEarly articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article.
Online production tracking is available through Blackwell's Author Services
Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.
Author Archive Author material archieve policy. Please note that unless specifically requested Blackwell Publishing will dispose of all hard copy or electronic material submitted two months after publication.
