Instructions to Authors
Preparing new manuscripts
Manuscript length Manuscripts, should not exceed 8,000 words (including text and figure legends but not references) plus 4 page equivalents of figures and tables. Manuscripts longer than this will only be accepted at the Editors' discretion.
Style For style guides and directions for manuscript preparation, refer to the preparation of manuscripts form.
Supplementary files Authors are encouraged to submit supplementary files, including movies, to accompany the Web version of their article. Please note that all supplementary files must be submitted for peer review. Details of how to submit supplementary files can be found under 'Manuscript submission'. Movies should be in QuickTime or MPEG format and of less than 10 Mb in size.
Electronic manipulation of images Image enhancement with computer software is acceptable practice, but there is a danger that it can result in the presentation of quite unrepresentative data as well as in the loss of real and meaningful signals. During manipulation of images a positive relationship between the original data and the resulting electronic image must be maintained. If a figure has been subjected to significant electronic manipulation the specific nature of the enhancements must be noted in the legend or in the Materials and Methods.
Reagents Note that by publishing in this journal, authors imply that they will make available specialized reagents (for example, antibodies or DNA probes) to other scientists in the field who require them for bona fide purposes.
Experimental animals Care and use of experimental animals must comply with all relevant local animal welfare laws, guidelines and policies, and a statement of such compliance should be provided to the Editor.
Disclaimer All authors and readers should note that responsibility for the accuracy of statements of fact, the authenticity of scientific findings or observations, expressions of scientific or other opinion and any other material published in this journal rests solely with the author(s), and that no responsibility for such matters is assumed by Journal of Cell Science, its owners, publishers, referees or staff.
Manuscript submission
Online submission Authors should submit manuscripts online as PDF files using our simple web-based interface. This eliminates the delays produced by mailing, as well as the costs incurred by author and publisher. For further details, click here. Please note, if submitting online you do not need to send a hard copy.
Hard-copy submission If you are unable to submit your manuscript online we can still consider manuscripts submitted in hard copy format. Please send 4 hard copies of the text, plus electronic versions of both the text and your covering letter as RTF files on floppy disk; this will speed up processing of your manuscript. Include 4 hard copies of all figures, which must be of suitable standard for reviewers to judge the quality of the work (photocopies of photographs are not acceptable). The original illustrations and electronic copies of figures should not be included initially; these must be sent with the revised manuscript. Please supply your address, telephone and fax numbers and email address for all correspondence about your manuscript. Authors should indicate whether they have a preference for which Editor will handle the manuscript and are welcome to provide the names and addresses of up to 5 potential referees. Please also include copies of any related (or potentially related) manuscripts that you have submitted to another journal (or are in press). If submitting movies to accompany your manuscripts, please provide three copies of these movies on disk, and if possible the URL of a web page where they can be viewed.
Manuscripts should be sent to: Journal of Cell Science Bidder Building 140 Cowley Road Cambridge CB4 0DL UK
For Customs purposes, please mark all packages 'No Commercial Value'; otherwise charges are levied.
Preparing an accepted manuscript
Once a manuscript is accepted, authors must supply one hard copy of the manuscript, including high-quality print outs of all figures, as well as electronic copies of the text and figures on disk . These must be accompanied by completed version of the preparation of manuscripts and disk submission forms and sent to the Production Editor at the following address.
Production Editor Journal of Cell Science Bidder Building 140 Cowley Road Cambridge CB4 0DL UK
The open access option As part of our commitment to maximizing the free availability of articles online, JCS offers authors the option to make their article ‘open access??i.e. immediately viewable without a subscription and not subject to access control (see http://www.biologists.com/web/openaccess.html for further details). The open access option is currently available at the special introductory rate of ?00 (US$800/€750). If you wish to take advantage of open access, please complete the payment details on the preparation of manuscripts form.
Sending files by FTP Once your manuscript has been accepted, you may also send files to the Company of Biologists Limited by FTP, by prior arrangement with the Production Editor. Please submit files only after your manuscript has been accepted for publication and assigned a manuscript number (e.g jcs1234). Prefix all the files you send with this manuscript number (except for linked images - see disk submission form) and use extensions to identify the file type (e.g. jcs1234_fig1a.jpg). Ideally, Macintosh files should be compressed by StuffIt or a similar program; PC users, should, if possible, use 'WinZip' or a similar compression program to compress files. Please store files in one archive, since this speeds up file transfer.
Authors FTPing through a Web browser should open the link at ftp://guest@ftp.biologists.com/upload/ enter the password 'armadillo' and transfer files across. comply with our naming convention. Authors using ftp client programs such as FTP Explorer (Windows NT) or Fetch (Macintosh) will need the following information:
FTP host name: ftp.biologists.com.
Login (username): guest
Password: armadillo
Directory: /upload
Transmit all files in binary mode.
Once you have uploaded your files, you must email the Production Editor to confirm that the files have been sent. Please list the names of all files and a description of their content.
Note on confidentiality: uploaded files can not be downloaded by FTP. Any files that you upload cannot be read by anyone other than staff of The Company of Biologists and their appointed representatives. Files will not normally be kept on the FTP server for extended periods of time.
Using Endnote Please download the Journal of Cell Science Endnote Style to format your bibliography. Also available is a Terms list (Medline.txt), which contains over 3360 Medline journal abbreviations that can be used in conjunction with these styles (they are set to use Abbreviation 1 in the Replace Journal field). This list is distributed by The Company of Biologists Limited, with the kind permission of Juergen Sasse, Ph.D. (Email: jsasse@msn.com).
