About the journal
The Journal of Approximation Theory is devoted to advances in pure and applied approximation theory and related areas. These areas include, among others: Classical approximation Abstract approximation Constructive approximation Degree of approximation Fourier expansions Interpolation of operators General orthogonal systems Interpolation and quadratures Multivariate approximation Orthogonal polynomials Pade approximation Rational approximation Special functions with strong connections to classical harmonic analysis, orthogonal polynomial, and approximation theory (as opposed to combinatorics, number theory, representation theory, generating functions, formal theory, and so forth) Spline functions of one and several variables Approximation theoretic aspects of complex function theory Approximation theoretic aspects of difference equations Approximation theoretic aspects of differential equations Approximation theoretic aspects of function spaces Approximation theoretic aspects of harmonic analysis Approximation theoretic aspects of real function theory Wavelet Theory and its applications in signal and image processing, and in differential equations with special emphasis on connections between wavelet theory and elements of approximation theory (such as approximation orders, Besov and Sobolev spaces, and so forth)
Instructions to Authors
Submission of Manuscripts
Manuscripts for publication should, preferably, be in English and must be submitted to:
Journal of Approximation Theory Editorial Office 525 B Street, Suite 1900 San Diego, CA 92101-4495, USA Telephone: (619) 699-6234 Fax: (619) 699-6850 E-mail: jat@elsevier.com
Authors should retain a copy. Original papers only will be considered. Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that the same work has not been and will not be nor is currently submitted elsewhere, and that its submission for publication has been approved by all of the authors and by the institution where the work was carried out; further, that any person cited as a source of personal communications has approved such citation. Written authorization may be required at the Editor's discretion. Articles and any other material published in the Journal of Approximation Theory represent the opinions of the author(s) and should not be construed to reflect the opinions of the Editor(s) and the Publisher.
Electronic Submission. Authors are requested to transmit the text and art of the manuscript in electronic form, via either computer disk or FTP (ftp.elsevier.com, with username anon and password essd4acc), each time a new version is submitted. Authors are strongly encouraged to use the LaTeX template available on the Journal of Approximation Theory home page (http://www.elsevier.com/locate/jat) or directly on the LaTeX Templates and Style Files page for manuscript preparation. Otherwise please follow the hard-copy manuscript preparation guidelines below. Note that extensive use of custom macros may necessitate conventional typesetting from the hard-copy manuscript. Hard-copy printouts of the manuscript and art that exactly match the electronic file must be supplied. The manuscript will be edited according to the style of the journal, and authors must read the proofs carefully.
Copyright and Permissions
Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that if the manuscript is accepted for publication, copyright in the article, including the right to reproduce the article in all forms and media, shall be assigned exclusively to the Publisher. The Copyright Transfer Agreement should be signed by the appropriate person.
Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions to reprint previously published figures, tables, and other material.
Manuscripts should be prepared according to the following style rules. Deviation from these rules causes publication delays.
Preparation of Manuscript
Submit manuscripts in triplicate. Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout on one side of 8.5 x 11-inch (21.3 x 27.5-cm) or A4 white paper. Number all pages consecutively and organize the paper as follows.
Title page (page 1). This page should contain the article title, authors' names and complete affiliations, footnotes to the title, and the address for manuscript correspondence (including e-mail address and telephone and fax number).
Abstract (page 2). The abstract must be a single paragraph that summarizes the main findings of the paper in less than 150 words. After the abstract a list of up to 10 keywords that will be useful for indexing or searching must be included.
Footnotes. In text, footnotes should be avoided. If absolutely necessary, identify them by superscript Arabic numerals in order of their appearance and type them together on a separate page, double-spaced.
Equations. All equations should be typewritten and the numbers for displayed equations should be placed in parentheses at the right margin. References to equations should use the form 'Eq. (3)' or simply '(3).'
References to the literature should be cited by Arabic numerals between brackets as [1], [1,2], [1, Theorem 1.5] in the text and listed in numerical order at the end. Please note the following examples:
[1] R.Q. Jia, J.J. Lei, Approximation by multiinteger translates of functions having global support, J. Approx. Theory 72 (1993) 2-23.
[2] A.G. Ramm, Multidimensional Inverse Scattering Problems, Longman/Wiley, New York, 1992.
[3] Y. You, Polynomial solutions of BKP hierarchy and projective representation of symmetric groups, in: Advanced Series in Mathematical Physics, Vol. 17, World Science, Singapore, 1989.
For unpublished lectures or symposia, include the title of the paper, name of the sponsoring society in full, and the date. For journal names, follow 'Abbreviations of Names of Serials reviewed in Mathematical Reviews' (American Mathematical Society, 1995). When in doubt about employing certain abbreviations, use clarity as a guide.
Tables. Number tables consecutively with Arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text. Type each table double-spaced on a separate page with a short descriptive title directly above and essential footnotes below. Authors should submit complex tables as camera-ready copy.
Figures should be in a finished form suitable for publication. Number figures with Arabic numerals, and indicate the top and the authors on the back of each figure. Lettering on drawings should be professional quality or generated by high-resolution computer graphics and must be large enough to withstand appropriate reduction for publication. Digital artwork of at least 300 dpi resolution is accepted in EPS or TIFF format. Please visit our Web site at http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork for detailed instructions on preparing electronic artwork. Type all legends consecutively on a separate sheet. Color art is permissible, but the extra printing costs will be charged to the author.
Proofs
Article proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. Authors will be charged for alterations in excess of 10% of the total cost of composition.
