International Studies Quarterly, published for the International Studies Association, is committed to publishing the best work being carried out in international studies today. Contributions come from a wide range of intellectual traditions, and cover both theoretical and policy-oriented research on foreign policy, comparative politics, and international affairs. The journal particularly encourages interdisciplinary debate, publishing articles which address important questions and controversies concerning international, cross-national, or trans-national phenomena.

Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts accepted for review are evaluated anonymously by a minimum of two scholars active and publishing in the field of international studies. Very often one of the evaluating scholars will be a member of the international Editorial Board of International Studies Quarterly. These evaluations help to inform the Editors, who alone are responsible for all final decisions on publication of manuscripts. The names of scholars who have furnished reviews of manuscripts during the previous year, and who are not Editorial Board members, are listed in the June issue of each volume.
1. As of 1 October 2003, new manuscripts should be submitted to the new editorial team at the University of North Texas. Original manuscripts that fall within the aims and scope of International Studies Quarterly may be submitted in two ways. The preferred means to submit papers is electronically, via e-mail. Those choosing to submit electronically should e-mail a message, which will serve as the letter to the editors, and two files containing their manuscripts to ISQ@UNT.EDU. One file should have all self-identifying references and language removed, no acknowledgement, and a title page without authors' names or affiliations. The second file should include such information. All files should contain an abstract of about 150 words. Our preferred file-types are either .pdf or Microsoft Word. Secondly, authors may send five hardcopies, of all manuscripts along with a digital copy (preferably in .pdf or Microsoft Word) to: Steven C. Poe, Chief Editor, International Studies Quarterly, Political Science Department, P.O. Box 305340, University of North Texas, Denton, TX 76203-5340. Three of the five should have all self-identifying references and language removed. Submitted work should not exceed 50 pages and must include an abstract of about 150 words. Manuscripts will be accepted on the understanding that their content is original and that the manuscript has not been accepted for publication or review elsewhere.
2. Title, subtitles, and text subheadings should be chosen for succinctness and interest. Primary and secondary text headings should be centered with a double line spacing above and below. Primary headings should be typed in capitals: secondary headings should have initial capital letters. Subsidiary headings should be flush to the left margin and indicated by a. , b. , c. , etc.
3. Quotations must correspond exactly with the original in wording, spelling and punctuation. Short quotations within the text should be noted by quotation marks; longer quotations or extracts should be indented from the left margin and require no quotation marks. Changes and additions to quotations should be identified by bracketing: ellipses (...) should be used to identify omissions; emphasis added should also be indicated. All citations should be specified in the text in the following manner:
(a) If the author is named in the text, cite by year of publication: ... Durkheim (1966) has suggested...
(b) If the author is not named in the text, cite by last name, comma, and year of publication:
...it has been noted (Zinnes, 1979) that...
(c) If necessary, pagination should follow the year of publication, separated by a colon: ...it was argued (Modelski, 1983:22)) that by...
(d) Dual authors should be joined by "and"; multiple authors should be listed in full on first citation and indicated by et al. thereafter:
...other approaches (Snyder and Deising, 1977:392-97) concede...
...many assume (George et al. , 1971:1271-72) that...
(e) If an author has multiple references for any single publication year, indicate specific works by use of lower case letters:
...one the one hand (Lacan, 1974a:45; Derrida, 1977b:22) it is...
(f) Series of references should be enclosed chronologically within parentheses and separated by semicolons:
...proponents of the position (George, 1982; Holsti, 1983; Starr, 1983) and many...
4. The reference section should be double-spaced and begin on a new page following the text. The reference form is modified from the Style Manual of the American Political Science Association (Draft, 1985) prepared by the APSA Committee on Publications. Works should be listed alphabetically by author. References should conform to the following format:
(a) References to books should list author(s), year, title, place of publication, publisher:
Von Mises, L. (1983) Nation, State, and Economy: Contributions to Politics and History of Our Time , translated by L. B. Yeager, New York: New York University Press.
Strunk, W. , Jr and E. B. White (1979) The Elements of Style . 3rd ed. New York: Macmillan.
(b) References to journal articles should list author(s), year, title of articles, journal name, volume, and inclusive pages:
Lipset. S. M. (1983) Radicalism or Reformism: The Sources of Working-class Politics. American Political Science Review 77:1-18.
(c) References to works in edited volumes should list author(s), year, essay title, volume title, volume editor(s), inclusive pages, place of publication, and publisher:
Weber, M. (1984) "Legitimacy, Politics and the States. "In Legitimacy and the State , edited by W. Connolly, pp. 32-62. New York: New York University Press.
(d) Reference to monographs in a series should list author(s), year, title, series title, place of publication, and publisher:
Fromkin, M. (1968) The Limits of Recognition . Singer Series on Law and International Society. New Haven, CT: Sanger Publishers.
5. Notes should be listed double-spaced and on a separate sheet with their location in the text clearly marked by superscript numbers. For manuscripts accepted for publication, all tables and illustrations should be professional in appearance and crisply produced in order to survive photo reproduction. Camera-ready (laser-printed, if available) artwork in final form is required.
6. Any submission not conforming to these requirements is incomplete and will not be considered for review. Page proofs will be supplied to the first author of a paper, but only errors in typesetting may be corrected at this stage. Any substantial alteration will be charged to the author(s). Consequently, the author(s) should ensure that the paper is submitted in final form. Proofs should be corrected and returned within seven (7) days of receipt.
7. Fifty offprints of articles will be supplied to the first author. Further offprints may be ordered; inquiries should be addressed directly to the publisher, not to the Editors.
8. Copyright resides with the International Studies Association.
