About the journal
The International Journal of Solids and Structures has as its objective the publication and dissemination of original research in Mechanics of Solids and Structures as a field of Applied Science and Engineering. It fosters thus the exchange of ideas among workers in different parts of the world and also among workers who emphasize different aspects of the foundations and applications of the field.
Standing as it does at the cross-roads of Materials Science, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Physics and Engineering Design, the Mechanics of Solids and Structures is experiencing considerable growth as a result of recent technological advances. The Journal, by providing an international medium of communication, is encouraging this growth and is encompassing all aspects of the field from the more classical problems of structural analysis to mechanics of solids continually interacting with other media and including fracture, flow, wave propagation, heat transfer, thermal effects in solids, optimum design methods, model analysis, structural topology and numerical techniques. Interest extends to both inorganic and organic solids and structures.
The emphasis is placed on contributions, analytical, experimental and numerical, which appear to be of permanent interest to research workers and engineers in the field. If furthering knowledge in the area of principal concern of the Journal, papers of primary interest to the constitutive disciplines of Materials Science, Mathematics, Physics and Engineering Design may be published. Papers which are merely illustrations of established principles and procedures, even though possibly containing new numerical or experimental data, will generally not be published.
When outstanding advances are made in existing areas or when new areas have been developed to a definitive stage, special review articles will be considered by the Editors.
No length limitations for contributions are set, but only concisely written papers are published. Brief articles are considered on the basis of technical merit. Discussions of previously published papers are welcome.

Instructions to Authors
Submission of Papers
Authors are encouraged to submit their articles online via the electronic submission website http://www.elsubmit.com/esubmit/sas. Manuscripts should be uploaded as Word .doc files. In the manuscript for review, figures (preferably as .gif or .jpg images) and tables should be embedded into the text. Figures should if possible also be additionally supplied separately as high-resolution files, in .eps or .tif format. An electronic (PDF) proof is generated from the Word file and the reviewing process is carried out using that PDF. Authors and editors send and receive all correspondence by e-mail and no paper correspondence is performed. However, authors are legally obliged to sign and return a physical copyright transfer form by conventional mail. A covering letter must accompany the paper confirming that 'this is an original manuscript which has neither previously, nor simultaneously, in whole or in part, been submitted anywhere else'. Full details can be obtained from the submission website, in particular the 'How to use this site' page http://www.elsubmit.com/esubmit/sas/how_to_use.html. [Note: online submissions are used to generate a PDF file for the review process but may be edited after acceptance to follow journal standards. It is important that all graphical and tabular elements be placed within the text, this will allow the preferred position of placement to be indicated; however, please note that due to journal conventions, it may not be possible to meet all requirements for placement of artwork. Occasionally, the PDF created may be too large to be handled easily. In this case authors will be contacted and invited to resubmit their article with figures as separate files.]
Authors may also submit their original manuscript and figures with three copies to the Editor-in-Chief or any member of the Editorial Board by regular mail; Editor-in-Chief: Charles Steele, International Journal of Solids and Structures, Stanford University, Durand Building, Room 262, Stanford, CA 94305-4040, USA. Tel: (650) 723-4133.
The language of the journal is English.
As IJSS is an archival journal, all papers submitted for possible publication are subjected to a rigorous peer-reviewing process. In order to initiate the review process, authors are required to include a short note in their covering letter with the following wording: "this is an original paper which has neither previously, nor simultaneously, in whole or in part been submitted anywhere else, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher".
Manuscript Preparation
General:The manuscript should be complete in all aspects, ie: all pages must be present; copies of all tables, figures and captions mentioned in the text must be supplied for any items in the manuscript reproduced from previously published material.
For initial submission manuscripts may be printed single spaced and double sided. An electronic file (disk) must be supplied with every hard copy of the manuscript - the hardcopy and electronic file must match exactly. For the benefit of the reviewers, figure legends should be with the illustrations. Once a paper is accepted, the final version must be typed in double spacing on one side of A4 paper. The figure legends should be typed on a separate sheet and placed at the end of the manuscript. All pages should be numbered consecutively. Good quality printouts with a font size of 12 or 10 pt are required. The corresponding author should be identified (include a Fax number and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible. An electronic copy of the paper must accompany the final version. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is asked to return original material after use.
Paper Length: While no maximum length of contribution is specified, authors are encouraged to write concisely.
Abstracts: Each paper should be provided with an abstract of no more than 200 words, reporting concisely on the purpose and results of the paper.
Keywords: Authors are invited to submit keywords associated with their paper. A list of preferred keywords is listed towards the end of each copy of the journal, though this list is not meant to be exhaustive.
Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title (an abbreviated title of less than 58 characters (including spaces) should also be suggested), Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Vitae, Figure Captions and then Tables. Do not import the Figures or Tables into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers.
Symbols: Due to the international character of the journal, no rigid rules concerning notation or abbreviations need to be observed by authors, but each paper should be consistent within itself as to symbols and units, all of which should be properly defined.
Maths: Mathematical symbols and formulae should be typed. Particular care should be exercised in identifying all symbols and in avoiding ambiguities. Distinction should be made between the number one (1) and letter l, and between the number zero (0) and the letter O. A vector will be printed in boldface and to indicate this the letter should be underscored with a wavy line.
References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to the author's name (without initials) and year of publication (e.g. "Since Peterson (1993) has shown that ..." or "This is in agreement with results obtained later (Kramer, 1994)". For three or more authors use the first author followed by "et al.", in the text. The list of references should be arranged alphabetically by authors' names. The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of authors' names and dates are exactly the same in the text as in the reference list. References should be given in the following form:
Hoff, N.J., 1958. A survey of the theories of creep buckling. In: Proceedings of the Third US National Congress of Applied Mechanics. ASME, New York.
Leitman, J.M., Fisher, G.M.C., 1973. The linear theory of viscoelasticity. In: Handbuch der Physik, Vol. VI a/3. Springer Verlag, Berlin, pp. 10-31.
Love, A.E.H., 1944. A Treatise on the Mathematical Theory of Elasticity. Dover Publication, New York.
Taljat, B., Zacharia, T., Kosel, F., 1998. New analytical procedure to determine stress-strain curve from spherical indentation data. International Journal of Solids and Structures 35 (33), 4411-4426.
Illustrations:Artwork will be used as supplied if at all possible. Therefore, the better the quality of the original artwork and the closer it matches the required final orientation and size, the more satisfactory the end result. For best results, the submitted illustrations should be the same size as they will appear in the journal. Elements of a figure supplied on one piece of paper will be treated as one piece of artwork.
All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author's name. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet. Line drawings: Originals should be black ink on white paper line diagrams or high contrast halftones and of good quality. However, if possible, use hatching rather than grey shading (shading does not reproduce well).
- Lettering on the artwork should be consistent in size with no elements very big or very small.
- Lettering characters should be large enough to remain 1-2 mm tall following any reduction that may be necessary.
- There should be no large white spaces within the artwork (eg: between axes and labels or between parts of the figure).
- Lines should be thick and uniform in density.
- Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction.
Photographs: Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable. Colour: Authors will be charged for colour at current printed costs.
Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).
Disk Submission Authors must submit a disk copy of their paper with the final version of the manuscript. The disk copy must match the hardcopy exactly. Always keep a backup copy of the disk file for reference and safety. Full details of disk submission and formats can be obtained from Author Services at Elsevier Science.
Proofs Full contact details for the corresponding author - including email address - must be supplied with the manuscript. The provision of an email address is important because the paper proof supplied to the author will be replaced by an electronic version (PDF). Authors will be instructed how to view and print their article.
Proofs sent to the corresponding author should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Authors are requested to return corrections either by emailing a list of corrections, or by making any corrections on a print out of the PDF and faxing this to the Log-in Department of the relevant Elsevier Science site.
Offprints Twenty-five offprints will be supplied free of charge. Offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints will incur a 50% surcharge.
Copyright All authors must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Science Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, but does not relinquish the author's proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations. Includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems.
