About the journal

Established in 1954, International Journal of Social Psychiatry provides a forum for the dissemination of findings related to social psychiatry. The journal is of interest to psychiatrists and other members of the multi-disciplinary team around the world concerned with the impact of social factors on individuals' well-being and mental health.
Social psychiatry as a branch of psychiatry deals with the social, environmental and cultural factors in the aetiology and outcomes of psychiatric disorders as affecting individuals as well as communities. In addition to research reports on original research, social psychiatry also provides a link with social anthropology, cultural psychiatry, sociology and other disciplines in the field of mental health and is equally influenced by them. International Journal of Social Psychiatry publishes original empirical research, review articles, book reviews and letters to the editor. The journal welcomes brief communications that get fast track publication, and also aims to reflect the international nature of the readership by publishing state of the art reviews from different parts of the world reflecting the practice of psychiatric disciplines.

Instructions to Authors
Information for contributors
1. International Journal of Social Psychiatry is published quarterly. It publishes original work in the fields of social and community psychiatry and in related topics.
2. Submission of an article will be taken to indicate that it has not been published in its present form elsewhere or that it is at
present being assessed by another journal. Where articles have been presented at congresses or conferences this should be
indicated. Letters of submission should be signed by all named authors.
3. Manuscripts accepted are subjected to copy editing to ensure conformity with Journal style.
4. General advice to authors. Articles are unlikely to be accepted for publication if they do not conform substantially to the
Journal style. In addition to original articles the journal also publishes Editorials, Review Articles, Brief Reports and Letters.
Editorials are generally invited by the Editor and reflect on topics of current controversy or to serve as introductions to themed
editions of the journal. Review Articles will, in a scholarly fashion, summarise an important area of the literature. Brief Reports will be up to 1000 words in length and provide a brief account of innovative work in the field. Submissions of Brief Reports and books for review within the Journal should be made to Dr Ed Watkins, Assistant Editor. All other correspondence, including Letters, which should conform to Journal style, should be sent to the Editor.
5. Three manuscript copies should be submitted and the author should retain his/her own copy. They should be double-spaced, typed on one side of the paper only with wide margins. Pages
should be numbered sequentially, starting with the title page. On acceptance of their manuscript, authors should supply a disk
(preferably PC compatible) of the final version.
(a) Titles should be typed on a separate sheet with the names of the contributors (but not their designations). Full titles and
addresses of authors (including tel/fax and e-mail) should be supplied on a separate sheet at the end of the article.
(b) Structured Abstracts are required for original papers. For data-based papers the Journal will expect abstracts, of up to 200 words, to contain a description of the Background to the study, its Aims, Methods, Results and Conclusions. For qualitative studies the Journal will consider such papers with an abstract of no more than 100 words, under the headings of Background, Material and Discussion and Conclusions.
(c) References should be listed alphabetically at the end of the paper, the titles of the journals being given in full. Authors should follow Journal style for the reference list and study the examples given below. Titles of books and journals are printed in italic and should therefore be underlined on the typescript. Reference lists not in Journal style will be returned to the author for correction. Authors should check that the text references and the reference list are in complete agreement as regards dates and spelling of names. The text reference should be in the form (Smith, 1971) or Smith (1971) showed that

(d) Tables and figures should be numbered separately and have short descriptive titles. The position of the table or figure

necessary for the presentation and clarity of results.
