About the journal

The International Journal, which is published quarterly, was founded in 1946 by the Canadian Institute of International Affairs, guided by the belief that such a periodical would be an important forum for Canadian views on international issues that the country was facing in the aftermath of the Second World War.

Although the International Journal has evolved in design and content over the past fifty years, its primary objectives continue to be:

  • to provide subscribers and readers, both in Canada and abroad, with high-quality scholarly analysis of different aspects of international affairs;
  • to give readers the benefit of the scholarship and analysis of a mixture of established scholars, promising junior scholars, and practitioners and policy-makers, Canadian and non-Canadian;
  • to provide Canadian scholars with an indigenous outlet for their research and analysis on aspects of international affairs and Canadian foreign policy

Because the Institute is precluded from expressing an opinion on any aspect of world affairs, the views expressed in the Journal are those of the authors.

The Journal gratefully acknowledges the assistance of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and of the Donner Canadian Foundation.
