About the journal
Distinguished by its international recognition since 1958, 'Human Development' publishes in-depth conceptual articles, commentaries, and essay book reviews that advance our understanding of developmental phenomena. Contributions serve to raise theoretical issues, flesh out interesting and potentially powerful ideas, and differentiate key constructs. Contributions are welcomed from varied disciplines, including anthropology, biology, education, history, philosophy, psychology, and sociology.

 The Editors and Editorial Board welcome manuscripts for review that address important issues related to human development from varied disciplinary perspectives, including psychology, anthropology, education, biology, and related disciplines. Manuscripts favored are conceptual in nature, drawing upon empirical findings and observations for illustrative purposes. Observations and findings are often used to raise theoretical issues, flesh out interesting and potentially powerful ideas, and differentiate key constructs. Scholars who are considering submitting a manuscript should consult current issues of the journal for examples of style, format, and content of published papers.

 Single copies of manuscripts of 25?5 pages should be submitted (with one original copy of illustrations) typewritten double-spaced on one side of the paper, with a wide margin. Manuscripts should be formatted in accordance with the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association: 5th Edition.
 In addition to a hard copy of your manuscript, please send as three separate email attachements (Microsoft Word or RTF electronic files): (1) your cover letter to the editor, (2) your abstract, and (3) your manuscript (following the aforementioned formatting guidelines).


 Conditions
 All manuscripts are subject to editorial review. Manuscripts are received with the explicit understanding that they are not under simultaneous consideration by any other publication. Submission of an article for publication implies the transfer of the copyright from the author to the publisher upon acceptance. Accepted papers become the permanent property of ‘Human Development?and may not be reproduced by any means, in whole or in part, without the written consent of the publisher. It is the author’s responsibility to obtain permission to reproduce illustrations, tables, etc. from other publications. A statement of editorial policy appeared in Vol. 46, No. 1, 2003, pp. 1?. The journal consists of the following types of publications: 1. Papers 2. Commentaries on Papers* 3. Replies to Commentaries by Authors* 4. Essay Reviews of Books* * by invitation only.


 Arrangement
 Presentation and citation of references, statistics, punctuation and abbreviations, construction of tables, selection of headings, and indentation must be in the APA style, 5th ed., as established by the American Psychological Association and adopted as our standard. It is important that authors whose first language is not English have the paper checked by a native English speaker before submission.
 Title page: The first page of each paper should indicate the title, the authors?names, the institute where the work was conducted, and a short title for use as running head.
 Full address on title page: The exact postal address of the corresponding author complete with postal code must be given at the bottom of the title page. Please also supply phone and fax numbers, as well as the e-mail address for the corresponding author.
 Key words on title page: For indexing purposes, a list of 3?0 key words is essential.
 Abstract: Each paper needs an abstract of up to 10 lines and no more than 150 words.
 Footnotes: Include only when essential. Number them consecutively and type them at the foot of the appropriate page.
 Tables and illustrations: Tables and illustrations (both numbered in Arabic numerals) should be prepared on separate sheets, using APA, 5th ed., format. Tables require a heading and figures a legend, also prepared on a separate sheet. For the reproduction of illustrations, only good drawings and original photographs can be accepted; negatives or photocopies cannot be used. Due to technical reasons, figures with a screen background should not be submitted. When possible, group several illustrations on one block for reproduction (max. size 144 x 196 mm) or provide crop marks. On the back of each illustration, indicate its number, the author’s name, and ‘top?with a soft pencil. Electronically submitted b/w half-tone and color illustrations must have a final resolution of 300 dpi after scaling, line drawings one of 800?200 dpi.


 Color Illustrations
 Up to 6 color illustrations per page can be integrated with the text at the special price of CHF / USD 660.00 per page. Color illustrations are reproduced at the author’s expense.


 References
 The list of references should include only those publications which are cited in the text. References should be listed alphabetically according to the last name of the first author. Please refer to the Publication Manual of the APA for formats required for reference citations in the text and the preparation of a reference list.
 Digital Object Identifier (DOI) S. Karger Publishers supports DOIs as unique identifiers for articles. A DOI number will be printed on the title page of each article. DOIs can be useful in the future for identifying and citing articles published online without volume or issue information. More information can be found at www.doi.org
