About the journal

Cover

Aims and Scope

Recognizing that research in human biology must be founded on a comparative knowledge of our closest relatives, this journal is the natural scientist's ideal means of access to the best of current primate research. 'Folia Primatologica' covers fields as diverse as molecular biology and social behaviour, and features articles on ecology, conservation, palaeontology, systematics and functional anatomy. In-depth articles and invited reviews are contributed by the world’s leading primatologists. In addition, special issues provide rapid peer-reviewed publication of conference proceedings. 'Folia Primatologica' is one of the top-rated primatology publications and is acknowledged worldwide as a high-impact core journal for primatologists, zoologists and anthropologists.

Published online first

All articles are published electronically ahead of print with the definite citation line. Thus, an article will be available online shortly after the author's approval to print.

Instructions to Authors

Submission

Papers can be accepted from any area of primatology, including behaviour, evolutionary biology, morphology, physiology and palaeontology; other topics may also be considered at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief. Our overall criteria are high quality and whether papers are likely to be of interest to a general primatological audience. Papers of any length can be accepted for publication, but authors MUST obtain prior permission from an Editor before submitting papers of over 5,000 words in total length, including references, tables, figure legends etc. Papers of preliminary, technical or anecdotal content are unlikely to be reviewed unless they are of unusual and/or immediate interest, such as techniques of high potential for primatological research or discoveries of new species and again, prior permission MUST be obtained from the Editors before submitting such manuscripts. The Editors alone will decide whether such manuscripts may be submitted and under what category. All are subject to full pee review and the same standards will be applied to all.

Authors must certify that they have read and adhere to every aspect of these Guidelines or manuscripts will not be further considered. The Submission Form must accompany all submissions. Authors must complete all tickboxes to certify that all Guidelines have been read and adhered to. The form is to be signed by the corresponding author.

Only original papers written in English, German or French are considered. In each case, authors must certify that the manuscript has been read and corrected for clarity, grammar and spelling by a native speaker of these languages Papers written in English should use UK English (that is British or International English) and follow spelling in The Oxford English Dictionary, except for authors in North American institutions, who may use US English if desired. An abstract in English must be included. An additional abstract in French, Portuguese or Spanish may be included by authors from habitat countries (defined as countries where natural populations of free-ranging primates live) where these languages are used.

Names, postal and e-mail addresses of four experts in the appropriate area of research should accompany each manuscript. Referees suggested should not be from the same institution as the author(s) nor be research collaborators of the author(s).

Manuscripts should be submitted online

Do not send manuscripts or revised manuscripts to any other address. Do not address queries concerning progress to any other address.

In an effort to reduce turnaround times and in fairness to other authors, authors are requested to return revised manuscripts within two months of receipt of the reviewers' comments and editor's decision letter. If this is not possible, it is essential for authors to notify the Editorial Office in writing of any delay, with reasons for the delay, within these time limits.

Ethical Guidelines

'Folia Primatologica' requires that all papers reporting field studies in which animals have been trapped, darted or otherwise handled, and papers reporting studies of captive animals, other than purely observational studies, should include in the text a clear statement of the justification for any animal contact and/or invasive procedures. It is not sufficient to state that protocols involving contact, or invasive procedures, accord to regulations of an internal or national ethical committee.

'Folia Primatologica' recognises that samples need to be taken to establish type specimens for new taxa, this can and should be done in such a way as to minimize death or other loss to wild populations: conservation should take priority over taxonomic splitting of already-recognized species. 'Folia Primatologica' will not normally accept papers which rely on taking and killing of multiple wild primates as 'voucher' specimens or for any other reason, and any submission involving such research must be agreed with the Editors in advance and be thoroughly justified to them in animal/human welfare or conservation terms.

When animals are euthanized during or at the end of experiments, justification in terms of a clear benefit to the health or well-being of humans and/or non-human primates is essential, even in conference abstracts.

When cadavers of wild primates, or live primates are bought from markets or local dealers for use in research, 'Folia Primatologica' expects a statement to be made indicating how it was ensured that such activity would not result in increased hunting/killing or collecting by the local community.

The Editors' decision on ethical issues is final.

Guidelines for Zoological Nomenclature

'Folia Primatologica' requires that authors adhere exactly to the provisions of the International Code For Zoological Nomenclature. This is particularly important when making claims for the existence of a new taxon.

Conditions

All manuscripts are subject to editorial review.

Manuscripts are received with the explicit understanding that they are not under simultaneous consideration by any other publication. Submission of an article for publication implies the transfer of the copyright from the author to the publisher upon acceptance.

Accepted papers become the permanent property of 'Folia Primatologica' and may not be reproduced by any means, in whole or in part, without the written consent of the publisher.

It is the author's responsibility to obtain permission to reproduce illustrations, tables, etc. from other publications.

Arrangement

Lines should be numbered on the margin.

Title page: The first page of each paper should indicate the title, the authors' names, the institute where the work was conducted, and a short title for use as running head. A count of the number of words in the manuscript, including main text, references and legends for figures and tables musst be given.
NB: Authors wishing to preserve the phonetic meaning of diacritics (PubMed reduces diacritics to their root characters) must spell their names accordingly when submitting manuscripts (e.g. Müller should be Mueller).

Full address: The exact postal address of the corresponding author complete with postal code must be given at the bottom of the title page. Please also supply phone and fax numbers, as well as e-mail address.

Key words: For indexing purposes, a list of 6–10 key words in English is essential.

Abstract: Each paper needs an abstract of up to 10 lines in English.

Footnotes: Avoid footnotes as far as possible. When essential, they are numbered consecutively and typed at the foot of the appropriate page.

Tables and illustrations: Tables and illustrations (both numbered in Arabic numerals) should be prepared on separate sheets. Tables require a heading and figures a legend, also prepared on a separate sheet. For the reproduction of illustrations, only good drawings and original photographs can be accepted; negatives or photocopies cannot be used. Due to technical reasons, figures with a screen background should not be submitted. When possible, group several illustrations on one block for reproduction (max. size 144 x 196 mm) or provide crop marks. B/w half-tone and colour illustrations must have a final resolution of 300 dpi after scaling, line drawings one of 800–1,200 dpi.

Colour Illustrations

Online edition: Colour illustrations are reproduced free of charge. In the print version, the illustrations are reproduced in black and white. Please avoid referring to the colours in the text and figure legends.

Print edition: Up to 6 colour illustrations per page can be integrated within the text at CHF 800.00 per page.

References

In the text, give author's name and date of publication in brackets, with et al. for three or more authors. Multiple references should be listed chronologically. The list of references should be arranged alphabetically (except that two-authored papers are listed before multi-authored papers with the same first author) and should include only those publications cited in the text. Work accepted for publication may be listed as 'in press'. 'Unpublished observations' or 'personal communications' cited in the text should not be listed in the references.

Please punctuate and format references exactly as in the following examples.
