About the journal

The European Journal of Clinical Investigation publishes papers in the field of clinical investigation, provided they contribute to the advancement of knowledge in this field. The term 'clinical investigation' is interpreted widely and includes studies relevant to humans in health or disease, including such studies that may have taken place with animals.

Instructions to Authors

General

The European Journal of Clinical Investigation (EJCI) publishes papers in the field of biology, physiology and mechanisms of human disease; such studies may have been done in vitro or in animals. The journal publishes six types of manuscript: full papers, editorials, commentaries, reviews, short reports and correspondence. Articles and other text material in the EJCI represent the opinions of the authors and do not reflect the opinions, official policy, or recommendations of the European Society of Clinical Investigation, the editors, the publisher, or the institution with which the author is affiliated, unless the contrary is specified.

A completed copyright assignment form must be included with the submitted manuscript.  The publishers will not refuse any reasonable request by the author for permission to reproduce any of his or her contributions to the EJCI. Articles and other text material in the EJCI represent the opinions of the authors and do not reflect the opinions, official policy, or recommendations of EJCI, the editors, the publisher, or the institution with which the author is affiliated, unless the contrary is specified.

Reports on biomedical research involving human subjects must include a statement that informed consent was obtained from each subject or subject's guardian and from the Institutional Review Board.

Manuscripts

Manuscripts should be sent to:

Receipt of the manuscript will be acknowledged by letter. Manuscripts should be typewritten, double-spaced throughout, on one side of the paper only, with margins of at least 25mm. Contributors must send the original manuscript (unstapled) and three copies (stapled) and a copy of the paper on disk. The first page of the manuscript should contain the following information: title of the report (no more than 70 characters); the authors' names and institution(s); the name, address, phone and fax numbers and E-mail address of the corresponding author; a running head (not exceeding 40 characters); acknowledgments; and a word-character count of the complete text.

The second page of the manuscript should contain a structured abstract not exceeding 250 words, and a maximum of six keywords. Abstracts should be organized and formatted according to the following headings: Background, Materials and methods, Results, and Conclusions. Authors may substitute 'Materials and methods' for 'Design'. The text of research manuscripts should be as concise as possible (not more than 2500 words, not including abstracts or references) and have clearly identified sections: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion.

Illustrations

Figures must be numbered in sequence with Arabic numerals. Each figure should be identified by the name of the author and the figure number, written in pencil on the back. The top should be indicated if there may be any uncertainty. Each figure should have a legend, and these should be listed together on a separate sheet. In the full-text online edition of the journal, figure legends may be truncated in abbreviated links to the full screen version. Therefore, the first 100 characters of any legend should inform the reader of key aspects of the figure. Line drawings should be of good quality and ideally glossy photographic prints should be submitted, although appropriate quality laser jet printed figures will be acceptable. Photographs to be included in the text should be submitted as unmounted glossy enlargements showing good contrast. Figures are generally reduced in size for publication. To maintain legibility, all numbers, letters, and symbols should be large enough originally so that when reduced they will remain at least 2 mm high. The authors will be charged for the extra costs of colour figures. We would like to received your artwork in electronic form. Please save vector graphics (e.g. half-tones) in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF). Ideally, vector graphics that have been saved in metafile (.WMF) or pict (.PICT) format should be embedded within the body of the text file. Detailed information on our digital illustration standards is available on the BSL website at: http://www.blackwell-science.com/elecmed/authors.htm.

Tables

Tables must be numbered in sequence with Arabic numerals and should be typed double-spaced on a separate page with the title centred at the top. They should be self-explanatory. Any footnotes should appear on the same sheet.

References

References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text, and should appear as numbers in square brackets. The reference list should show the references in numerical order. Use the style based on the formats used by the National Library of Medicine in Index Medicus. The titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the style used in Index Medicus. Consult the List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus, published annually as a separate publication by the library and as a list in the January issue of Index Medicus. The list can also be obtained through the library's Web site (http://www.nlm.nih.gov). Work that has not been accepted for publication and personal communications should not appear in the reference list. List 6 authors, followed by "et al" if the number exceeds 6. An example of a correct reference is given below:

1 Parkin DM, Clayton D, Black RJ, Masuyer E, Friedl HP, Ivanov E, et al. Childhood Leukaemia in Europe after Chernobyl: 5 year follow-up. Br J Cancer 1996; 73:1006-12.

Abbreviations

Abbreviations are discouraged and should not appear in the title or abstract. All abbreviations must be defined at the first mention and should be coined only for unwieldy names that occur frequently.

Editorials, Commentaries, Review Articles

Editorials, commentaries and reviews may be solicited by the Editor. Unsolicited reviews and commentaries will also be considered. These manuscripts must be prepared in a manner appropriate for other papers and will be reviewed as original articles submitted for consideration.

Short Communications

Concise papers (not exceeding 1500 words) which serve a similar purpose as full articles. Short reports may describe early results or preliminary results.

Letters to the Editor

Letters to the Editor are welcomed and will be published, if suitable, after appropriate reviewing. They should be typewritten or printed, double-spaced, preferably no longer than 500 words, and submitted in triplicate. Letters may be condensed at the Editor's discretion.

Suggestions for reviewers

The EJCI is a peer-reviewed journal. Authors must suggest in their covering letter the names, addresses, telephone and fax numbers and email address of at least three reviewers with appropriate expertize. These individuals should not be involved in the work of the authors in any possible way for the last three years. In addition, any reviewers that the authors would prefer to exclude should be listed with the reason for exclusion.

Proofs

Page proofs should be returned duly corrected to the publisher within three days of receipt. Proof corrections are expensive, and authors may be required to pay for any major alterations or additions made in proof.

Offprints

Fifty offprints of each paper are supplied free. Additional copies may be obtained at terms based upon the cost of production. All offprints should be ordered when the proofs are returned, using the form supplied by the Publishers.

The Electronic Manuscript

The final, accepted manuscript must be submitted on a 3.5" disk, together with a printed original and two copies of the printout. The DOS or Windows operating system and the Word Perfect or Word for Windows word-processing package must be used. ASCII versions of the files should be included in addition to word processor versions. Label the disk with your name, short title of paper, journal in which it is to be published, and the computer software used.
