The two journals share the same Board of Editors and editorial policies. The criteria for assignment of article-style papers to one journal or the other vary, but Articles over 16 printed pages are generally published in Ecological Monographs.  Abstracts should be no longer than 350 words.   Instructions to Authors   How to submit a manuscript to the Journals a note from the editors! For purposes of review, submitted manuscripts need not adhere to journal style in every detail; however, preparation of final revisions of manuscripts accepted for publication will be easier if ESA style is followed from the outset. Minimum formatting requirements for submitted manuscripts: The entire manuscript must be double-spaced (text, quotations, figure legends, tables, literature cited, etc.) at three lines per inch (12 lines/ 10 cm). Leave at least 1 inch (2.4-cm) margins on all sides of each page. Do not justify the right margin. Assemble the parts of each copy of the manuscript in this order: title page, abstract, key words, text, acknowledgments, literature cited, print appendices, tables, figure legends, figures. Appendices for Ecological Archives should be in a separate file. Number all pages (including tables, and figures), starting with the title page. All pages of text should have line numbers as well. Specify the manuscript type. [More info] Authors are responsible for modifying their profile to keep the editors and staff informed of changes of address. The corresponding author will be notified of receipt of the manuscript. Authors can achieve more concise manuscripts by shortening and focusing the Introduction and Discussion, and by reducing the numbers of figures, tables, citations, and/or secondary parts of the methods. Designate material for digital appendices or supplements in Ecological Archives with an eye to keeping the manuscript as concise as possible. (See A note from the editors.) Please upload the appendices and supplements in Word or HTML in a file or files separate from the manuscript. Not until the manuscript is accepted do we require HTML formatting of appendices from you. Please see Ecological Archives for additional information and to view examples of digital appendices. Most tables that consist merely of P values and other statistical tests but without estimates of effect sizes should be in digital appendices. However, for complicated statistical designs that are carefully dealt with in the text, a table or two could better be placed in the text. Tables and figures that have appeared in dissertations and are published in University Microfilms may not be necessary at all, or they can be included in digital appendices. A principle to follow is that tables and figures of biological information (not merely of statistical test results) referred to multiple times should be in ink, in the manuscript. Other tabular and graphical material can be put in the archives.
