Instructions to Authors
COPY AND GENERAL FORMAT REQUIREMENTS
Manuscripts shall be submitted on computer diskettes (5-1/4 in. [13.3 cm] or 3-1/2 in. [8.89 cm]) with hard copies and original graphics attached, or on paper in typewritten form. Manuscripts submitted on diskettes must be formatted in IBM-compatible WordPerfect, IBM- or Macintosh-compatible Microsoft Word, or ASCII text. For manuscripts not submitted on diskettes, all typewritten manuscripts will be scanned electronically by an optical character reader (OCR or scanner).
The Corrosion Author's Guide is an abbreviated version of the NACE Publications Style Manual, as approved by the Publications Committee of NACE International in October 1994. The complete manual also includes lists of abbreviations for periodicals frequently cited in NACE publications; abbreviations, acronyms, and symbols in corrosion-related terminology; addresses of frequently cited organizations; and U.S. customary/metric conversions for units commonly used in corrosion-related literature. The complete manual also includes author's guides for other NACE publications. Download a copy of the complete NACE Publications Style Manual or contact NACE International at 1440 South Creek Drive, Houston, TX 77084-4906; phone 281/228-6223; fax 281/228-6328 for a copy.
All manuscript pages must be typed (no handwritten marks on the pages, if possible), double-spaced with sharp black print on one side of white 8-1/2 in. x 11 in. (22 cm by 28 cm) paper. All margins should be 1-1/2 in. (3.8 cm). The original typed pages must be submitted. No photocopies or fax copies will be accepted. All pages must be numbered, and all figures, tables, and equations must be labeled (e.g., Figure 1, Table 2, Equation [3]). Original artwork and glossy photographs shall be submitted with all manuscripts. For publications with multiple authors, the first author mentioned in the manuscript will be considered the primary author with whom editors shall correspond regarding publication. Minor contributors should be named in the Acknowledgments section if they must be named. Headings and subheadings shall be used to divide a manuscript into sections. Each heading should be as concise as possible and should inform the reader of the nature of the information to be presented in the sections or paragraphs that follow. After the manuscript has been prepared, three copies plus one set of original graphics should be sent to:
Dr. J.B. Lumsden , FNACE Corrosion Technical Editor Rockwell International 1049 Camino Dos Rios Thousand Oaks, CA 91360
ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA
Articles considered for Corrosion should have significant permanent value and should accomplish at least one of the following objectives: a) Contribute to the awareness of corrosion phenomena, b) Advance understanding of fundamental processes, and/or c) Further the knowledge of techniques and practices used to reduce corrosion.
ACCEPTABLE FORMS OF ARTICLES
The following six categories of papers are acceptable for submission to Corrosion:
- Research Papers - Research papers should emphasize important advances beyond present knowledge and research findings where significant variables have been measured and interpreted.
- Review Papers - These full-length articles should provide critical reviews of specific portions of literature. The primary emphasis of a review paper should be to provide synthesis of available experimental and theoretical knowledge and a criticism of weaknesses in existing data and interpretations.
- Technical Notes -Technical notes are short contributions that announce a significant new finding and provide proof or information additional to a previous article.
- Discussions - Discussions are short communications that add pertinent information to the paper of another author, identify and justify points of disagreements with a paper of another author, or reply to or comment on a previously published paper.
- Special Papers -These may include biographies of important contributors to the field of corrosion, reviews of important industrial problems, translations of articles from foreign journals, reprints of articles of historical significance, or descriptions of important advances in techniques.
- Special Sections - News items, book reviews, calendars, descriptions of corrosion laboratories, special announcements, etc., are accepted periodically at the editor's discretion.
MANUSCRIPT FORMAT
In general, articles submitted for publication in Corrosion should contain the following components in the order listed:
- Title, Author Name(s), and Affiliation(s) - Titles should be worded concisely to convey the paper's topic and to allow for accurate abstracting and indexing of papers. Phrases like "A Study on" and "A Report on" are usually unnecessary.
- Abstracts - In a brief overview of a paper's contents, abstracts should concisely state the significant contributions of the paper.
- Key Words - Key words aid in abstracting and indexing a paper.
- Introduction - Introductions should outline the problem and briefly explain the reasons the work described in the paper was performed.
- Experimental Procedure - This section should describe how equipment was used and/or how tests were conducted, any unusual test procedures used, and the development of experimental equipment, with illustrations, if possible. This section also should evaluate the equipment used and its application.
- Results - This section should present the results of the study in the clearest form, whether it be through text, graphs, or tables. The text should be used to give essential information on illustrations.
- Discussion - In this section, the author(s) should analyze the experimental procedure, the results, and the implications of the results, and compare procedures and results with other previous techniques and findings.
- Summary/Conclusions - A summary or conclusions regarding the work should be stated directly and briefly in this section, with special emphasis on the significance of the information to the reader.
- Acknowledgments - Special help from individuals and/or organizations may be recognized in the Acknowledgments section. Secondary and minor authors also may be named in this section.
- References - References consulted in preparing a paper shall be cited in a reference list at the end of the paper.
- Appendices - Appendices should be used only for supplemental or background information that is crucial to the understanding of the paper but would otherwise disturb the continuity of the text.
- Tables - Data often are presented in tabular form to aid the reader in comprehension and comparison.
- Figures and Figure Captions - Photographs, line drawings, and other graphics should be included to help illustrate the author's point. All research papers must have an abstract, an introduction, and a summary or conclusions.
PUBLICATION PROCEDURES
Author Responsibilities Charges, Payments, Gratis Copies - There is a charge of $50 per printed page to authors, to a maximum of $500. In general, two and one-half typed, double-spaced pages is the equivalent of one printed page, and six 1-column figures equals one printed page. If authors elect to use color figures or artwork, there will be an additional charge to cover the added cost of color publication. This fee typically is between $500 and $1,000. No fees are due until after a manuscript has been accepted for publication. For more information or to request a waiver of page charges, contact the Corrosion managing editor or visit the NACE home page on the internet at http://www.nace.org.
Unless specified otherwise in the submission, all correspondence regarding the manuscript will be directed to the primary author (designated by and corresponding with the technical editor).
Copyright - NACE requires the author of a submitted paper to notify the Association with a letter of submission if all or any portion of an article has been published previously. Full references and complete documentation of permission to use previously published material must be submitted with the manuscript. Authors will be required to transfer copyright of the complete manuscript to NACE, using the NACE Transfer of Copyright form.
Review and Approval Technical Review - The paper will be submitted by the technical editor to anonymous peer reviewers, who will assist in determining whether the paper should be accepted for publication.
Notification of Publication Approval - After receiving the technical reviewers' anonymous comments, the technical editor will notify the primary author by mail of tentative publication approval or rejection, or of additional work to be done before the paper may be considered for publication. The editor will forward the paper with any original graphics to NACE Headquarters in Houston for publication.
At that time, Headquarters will notify each author by mail about publication dates. Questions or concerns about papers at this point should be directed to Corrosion Managing Editor, phone 281/228-6260; telex 792310 NACE HOU; or fax 281/228-6300.
Headquarters Editing - The paper will be edited by the staff editor for grammar, language, and NACE style, including conciseness, readability, directness, etc. A proof copy of the typeset paper will be sent to the primary author for approval and/or corrections. The proofs are sent to authors approximately three to six months after the paper has arrived at NACE Headquarters. Author response to proofs is limited only to typographical and minor technical errors.
Publication - After the author returns the proofs, any necessary corrections will be made. Typically, there is a four- to six-month wait between the time a paper is accepted for publication and the time it is published. The paper is published usually within one month after the author has returned the proofs.
