About the journal

Aims & Scope

The aim of Compositio Mathematica is to publish first class mathematical research papers. By tradition the journal focuses on papers in the main stream of pure mathematics. This includes the fields of algebra, number theory, topology, algebraic and analytic geometry and (geometric) analysis. Papers on other topics are welcome if they are of interest to more than specialists alone. All contributions are required to meet high standards of quality and originality and are carefully screened by experts in the field.

The compositio Class File for LaTeX2e

Authors are encouraged to submit their manuscripts in the new compositio document class for LaTeX2e. It has been designed specifically to allow easy conversion from the article and amsart document classes. Simple instructions for converting to (or creating your article in) the compositio class are contained in the author guide "Using the compositio class file", which can be previewed here as a hyperlinked PDF file [232 KB] (for this, the free Adobe Acrobat?Reader?/A> browser plug-in is required). The author guide is also available as a 'gzipped' postscript file [162 KB].

Instructions for Downloading the compositio Class File

UNIX USERS: Click here to download the class-file distribution as a 'tarred' and 'gzipped' archive [22 KB]. After saving the file compositio.tar.gz, execute the following commands to unpack the files:

  • gunzip compositio.tar.gz
  • tar xvf compositio.tar

Then follow the instructions in the file 'readme-cm.txt'.

WINDOWS USERS: Click here to download the class-file distribution as a 'zipped' archive [24KB]. You must have suitable archiving software pre-installed in order to unpack the files, such as WinZip or PowerArchiver (click to download this).

Then follow the instructions in the file 'readme-cm.txt'.

MACINTOSH USERS: Click here to download the class-file distribution as a 'zipped' archive [24KB]. You must have suitable archiving software pre-installed in order to unpack the files, such as ZipIt (click to download this).

Then follow the instructions in the file 'readme-cm.txt'.

List of Files

The unpacked file distribution should contain the following files:

  • readme-cm.txt;
  • compositio.dtx (source code for the document class);
  • compositio.ins (installation script that creates compositio.cls);
  • cmguide.tex (sample file and source code for the user guide);
  • compwin.bat (a special installation file for Windows).

If the files fail to unpack, you probably already have them installed. In this case, if the supplied files are newer, we strongly recommend that you use the newer files. To do this, rename any existing file and unpack the distribution again.

Sample Paper in Final Published Format

The following examples (containing the author guide) illustrate how your accepted paper would appear in its final, published form. Note that the Compositio Mathematica logo and bibliographic information are displayed in a header at the top of the title page. NB: The .dvi, .ps or .pdf output that you may produce from the sample file cmguide.tex is very similar, but does not include the title-page header or logo. These will be added later by production staff.

Please report any problem related to the LaTeX2e class file compositio.cls to the production office of the London Mathematical Society at production@lms.ac.uk. From January 2004, Compositio Mathematica will be published by the London Mathematical Society (LMS) on behalf of the Foundation Compositio Mathematica.

Guidelines for Preparation of Manuscripts

Compositio Mathematica prefers the submission of papers in LaTeX; however, papers submitted in TeX, AMSTeX, LAMSTeX and for conventional typesetting can also be accepted.

Submission in the new compositio.cls document class for LaTeX2e will normally ensure the shortest time from acceptance to publication. Papers submitted in either article.cls or amsart.cls may also benefit from a (small) reduction in the production time in comparison with other formats.

Your paper should conform reasonably well to the Compositio Mathematica journal style. Our style preferences are described in the following short document in PDF format [120 KB]: cmstyle.pdf (click to view this; the free Adobe Acrobat?Reader?/A> browser plug-in is required). Alternatively, a hard copy can be requested from the editorial office via e-mail to compmath@compositio.nl or in a letter to G. van der Geer, Managing Editor, Compositio Mathematica, Korteweg-de Vries Instituut, Universiteit van Amsterdam, Plantage Muidergracht 24, 1018 TV Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC) Codes (2000)

Please use the 2000 MSC codes when submitting your paper. The 2000 MSC Codes are listed on the AMS website. Classification numbers should appear at the bottom of the first page of the manuscript. See the above guidelines for more information on our journal style.
