About the journal

Cement and Concrete Research publishes reviews, original papers and rapid communications in the field of cement, cement composites, concrete and other allied materials that incorporate cement. Research work reported encompasses the physics, chemistry and materials science of cement and its hydration, and the interrelation of chemical and microstructural characteristics with the mechanical properties, performance and durability of advanced cementitious materials and concrete.

Instructions to Authors

SUBMISSION OF PAPERS: All manuscripts (in triplicate) should be sent directly to the editorial office (at the address printed at the end of the Notes for Authors). Authors should follow closely the guidelines relating to the category of paper they are submitting (see below for full details). There are five categories of papers: Reviews, Papers, Communications (maximum submitted length of 6 manuscript pages), Discussions (maximum submitted length of 4 manuscript pages), and Letters (maximum submitted length of 2 manuscript pages)-the maximum number of manuscript pages includes tables and figures. The Journal publishes papers in English only. The manuscripts should be submitted as hard copy only; when accepted, authors will be requested to send in a disk containing the final version of the paper. Reprint order forms will be sent to the authors whose papers have been accepted for publication. There are no mandatory page charges.

TRANSFER OF COPYRIGHT: Authors will be required to transfer the copyright of their article to the publisher. Papers cannot be published until the copyright transfer form is received. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information.

PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPT Manuscripts should be typed, double spaced, with wide margins and on good quality paper; the manuscript, plus two copies (including duplicate copies of figures and tables) should be submitted. Conciseness in writing is required. Do not repeat data, i.e., generally use either tabular or graphical presentation of a set of data, not both. The manuscript should conform to the following guidelines:

1. The title page should contain the title of the paper, author(s), affiliation(s) with city, state, zip code, and country, and correspondence footnote. Superscript letters should be used to denote affiliation: a; b. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk.

2. Keywords-Authors should select a maximum of five keywords. Each keyword should be accompanied by the capital letter denoting the category from which the keyword has been selected. If authors wish they may nominate one keyword which is not included in the list below. The list of up to five keywords should appear on the title page of each paper.

3. Each paper should be accompanied by an abstract. The abstract should not be more than 150 words for Reviews, Papers, and Communications, and not more than 100 words for Letters and Discussions.

4. Major headings, e.g., Introduction, Methods, Results, etc., should be numbered, as well as any subsidiary headings (1.1, 1.2).

5. Figures and tables should be supplied on separate sheets of paper (not on disk). Line diagrams should be produced on a high-resolution printer (600 dpi or greater) or in the form of glossy prints. Half-tone pictures should be supplied in duplicate as glossy prints. Figures should be identified on the reverse with figure number and author(s) name, and when necessary the top should be clearly marked. Both diagrams and half-tones should be no larger than required to convey information. Use large enough lettering so that the smallest elements (i.e., superscript or subscript characters) will be readable when the figure is reduced. Color photographs can only be reproduced in exceptional cases and at additional cost to the authors.

6. References should be indicated in the text by consecutive numbers in brackets, i.e., [1,2], as part of the text, not raised above it. Full references should be cited in a numbered list on a separate sheet of paper. References should contain the names of all authors of any one paper together with their initials, the article title, the title of the journal (abbreviated if possible in accordance with The World List of Scientific Periodicals), volume number, page numbers, and year, as illustrated below. References to books should contain the publisher's name and location.

Journal: [1] H. Uchikawa, S. Hanehara, T. Shirasaka, D. Sawaki, Effect of water curing, Cem Concr Res 22 (2) (1992) 115-120.

Book: [2] H.F.W. Taylor, Cement Chemistry, Academic Press, New York, 1990.

Article in Edited Book: [3] D.F. Hewlett, P.D. Jones, The effect of superplasticizers on concrete materials, in: G. Fontinou, P.D. Jones (Eds.), Chemical Admixtures, Academic Press, New York, 1981, pp. 135-155.

7. Use only standard symbols and abbreviations in text and illustrations.

8. Units should be expressed in the International System of Measurement (SI) or metric system. Where desirable, conversion into a duplicate set of units may be shown in parentheses in text or illustrations.

9. Any numbered equations in text, as well as all tables and figures, must be cited in text, i.e., (Eq. 1), (Table 3), (Fig. 1), see Eq. (1), etc.

In order to speed publication and ensure accuracy, authors are requested to submit a 3.5" HD/DD computer disk containing the final version of the paper along with the final, double-spaced manuscript to the editorial office. Instructions will be supplied once a manuscript has been reviewed, revised, and accepted. Authors should observe the following criteria: (1) Only hard copy should be sent when submitting the paper. (2) When the paper has been refereed, revised if necessary, and accepted, the author should send a disk containing the final version with the final hard copy. The disk and hard copy must match exactly. (3) The software used must be specified, including which release (Microsoft Word 6.0 or WordPerfect 6.0 is preferred). (4) The computer used should be specified (either IBM-compatible PC or Apple Macintosh). (5) The file should follow the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style of this journal as given in the Notes for Authors. (6) The electronic file should be single-spaced and the wrap-around end-of-line feature should be used (i.e., no returns at the end of each line). All textual elements should begin flush left, with no paragraph indents. Two returns should be placed after every element such as title, headings, paragraphs, and figure legends. (7)Automatic numbering or footnoting features must not be used. (8) A backup disk for reference and safety should be maintained. Full details of electronic submission and formats can be obtained from http://authors.elsevier.com

COMMUNICATIONS: If more rapid publication is sought to report novel or innovative research, a paper of a maximum of 6 manuscript pages, which includes tables and figures, should be sent directly to the Editor-in-Chief with a request that it be sent to an Editor for consideration as a Communication. Manuscripts accepted in this way will be published with a minimum of delay. The Editor who accepts the paper for publication will remain anonymous.

Authors should follow the regular instructions for the preparation of manuscripts.

LETTERS AND DISCUSSIONS: Contributions submitted to the Editor-in-Chief under this heading may be concerned with matters of opinion and criticism of interest to the community of scientists, engineers, and technologists in the cement and concrete field. These contributions are subject to the same format and layout requirements as regular papers, including tables and figures. Discussions should be limited to 4 manuscript pages; Letters to 2 manuscript pages (which includes tables and figures).

EDITORIAL OFFICE ADDRESS: All manuscripts (including Communications) and any general requests for information should be addressed to the Editor-in-Chief, Professor Della M. Roy, or the Managing Editor, Kathleen S. Mourant, Cement and Concrete Research, Materials Research Laboratory, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA 16802, USA, Tel: (814) 865-1137, Fax: (814) 863-7040, E-mail: cemcon@psu.edu.
