About the journal

The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering is recognized internationally as being one of the leading publications in its field. Published on a non-profit basis by the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering, the Journal carries original research papers, in either English or French, dealing with the theory or practice of chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, environmental process engineering and applied chemistry.

The Journal publishes six issues a year. Each volume contains 160 to 190 pages of fully reviewed articles, notes or reviews, plus book reviews and letters to the editor, totalling some 1050 pages every year.

Instructions to Authors

TYPES OF PUBLICATIONS

The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering publishes original research, new theoretical interpretation and critical reviews in the science or industrial practice of chemical and biochemical engineering or applied chemistry, including papers which address topics in environmental process engineering, or emerging technologies. Preference is given to papers having a clearly indicated practical scope and applicability in the above areas, and to those where new theoretical concepts are supported by experimental data. Papers which merely describe or present a conventional analysis (without novel elements) of the performance of existing processes or equipment will not be considered.

(a) Review Article - these normally are invited. Authors wishing to submit a critical review should consult the Editor, in advance.

(b) Article - a full-length paper describing new theory, or significant and substantial new results.

(c) Note - describes the results of a short, but complete study, or describes new or significantly improved experimental methods or devices.

(d) Letters - are of two types: (i) from authors, correcting or briefly elaborating on a paper previously published in the Journal; (ii) from others, commenting on material previously published in the Journal. Normally, these will be sent to the authors of the prior publication for response before publication.

Submission of a paper infers that it is not being considered for publication elsewhere and that it has not been published previously in any archival publication. All the co-authors should have approved the submission, in advance. Review Articles, Articles and Notes will be reviewed by three persons knowledgeable of the topic. Reviewers will remain anonymous.

MANUSCRIPT REQUIREMENTS (ALL CATEGORIES)

(a) The manuscript must be in either English or French. It should have been carefully checked for clarity, conciseness, correctness of grammar and spelling and for typographical errors.

(b) Four clear copies of the manuscript must be supplied. Number each page, up to and including the Figure Captions page(s). For co-authored papers, identify the person to whom correspondence should be addressed using an asterisk (*) and a footnote on the first page.

(c) Abstract: The abstract is to indicate in not more than 100 words the scope and principal findings of the work (Abstracts are not required for Letters). Following the Abstract, provide a maximum of five keywords or key-phrases that accurately described the topic of the paper (these will be used for subject indexing). The maximum number of words for key-phrases is 5; maximum total number of words = 10. Example: combustion, coal combustion, fluidized bed coal combustion, gas fluidization.

(d) Main Body of Manuscript: Appropriate use of headings and subheadings should be made in the main body. Use the different styles illustrated here for main headings (e.g. Results and Discussion), primary subheadings (e.g. Effect of Temperature) and secondary subheadings (e.g. With Calcined Catalyst). The main headings should appear larger in type size than the subheadings.

All references, tables and figures should be referred to in the text. Written descriptions as opposed to interpretation of figures should be minimized.

Reference citations: Citations in the main body, appendices, tables and figures are to be made using the last name of the author (both authors when only two; first author plus et al. when more than two). Example: "... as previously shown (Jones et al., 1989)," or  "...as shown by Jones et al. (1989)." Sole exception: references may be cited in lengthy Review Articles by number (e.g., ...as previously shown [53]). For two or more papers published in the same year by the same author(s), add a, b,  c, etc. to the year, e.g. (1980a) or (1980b) and cite jointly as Jones et al. (1980a, b).

Chemical names: Chemical compounds are to be named according to the rules established by IUPAC. Positional prefixes are to be printed in italics; examples: n-butane, n-C4-H10.

Symbols: symbols preferably should be machine-printed. Print vector or tensor symbols in bold face, or underline them twice (e.g. v, or ). Greek letters, superscripts and subscripts should be printed carefully. The use of unnecessarily-complex subscripts and superscripts is to be avoided. Definitions and units should not be given in the main body, except when essential to convey a clear understanding of the theoretical development.

Equations: All equations should be numbered using Arabic numerals. Algebraic fractions in numbered equations (including those in Appendices) are to be printed in the following example styles:

                            (1)

Use the oblique slash to indicate division only for simple definitions included in a line of text. Examples: ... where ; dy/dx = (A/x) + B.

(e) Nomenclature: A list, in alphabetical/numerical order, of all symbols used in the paper (including tables, figures and appendices) must be provided on separate pages following the main body. List Greek letter symbols, alphabetically, immediately after the list of Roman symbols in a separate subsection entitled Greek letters. Definitions and S.I. units (kg, m, s, N, etc.) are to be provided for all listed symbols. The Canadian Metric Practice Guide (CAS/CSA-Z234.1-89) is followed, and is available from the Canadian Standards Association, 178 Rexdale Blvd., Rexdale, Ontario M9W 1R3. A summary of this practice for S.I. units is published occasionally in the Journal.

(f) References: Starting on a separate page, list all cited references (including citations in tables, figures and appendices) in alphabetical order according to the first-named author or patentee. The titles of papers, patents and book or monograph chapters and the initial and final page numbers are to be included. Abbreviations of journal names should conform to the usage of Chemical Abstracts.

Example for journal papers - Bohkar, A. and M. Boulos, "Energy Balance for a D.C. Plasma Torch", Can. J. Chem. Eng. 58, 171-176 (1980).

Example for book/monograph sections or chapters - Pan, Z. J., R. T. Yang and J. A. Ritter, "Kinetic Separation of Air by Pressure Swing Adsorption", in "New Directions in Sorption Technology", G. E. Keller II and R. T. Yang, Eds., Butterworth Publishers, Boston, MA (1989), pp. 61-67.

Example for conference proceedings - Farnand, B. and C. Fairbridge, "The Fractal Nature of Membrane Porosity", in "Proc. 2nd Int. Conf. Sep. Sci. Technol.", M.H.I. Baird and S. Vijayan, Eds., Hamilton, ON, Canada, Oct. 1-4, 1989, Can. Soc. Chem. Eng., Ottawa, ON (1989), pp. 36-43.

(g) Tables: Each table is to be provided on a separate page; these follow the References. Tables are to be numbered in Arabic numerals and have a brief descriptive title at the top of each table. Column headings should be brief and must include the units of the item(s) listed.

(h) Figures: Figures should not duplicate results given in tables. All figures should be numbered in Arabic numerals. Figure captions are to be listed in order on (a) separate page(s) immediately preceding the appended copies of the figures. Captions must not be printed on the original figures, but may he repeated on the appended copies in the manuscript. Drawings should be carefully made. The quality of some computer-printed figures may be unacceptable for reproduction. Authors should note that figures are usually reduced to 89 mm in width. Lettering and data points should be carefully and neatly sized to be clearly visible after size reduction. No grid lines should be used. Original drawings should be retained by the authors until requested by the editor. Photographs normally should be black and white glossy prints with strong contrasts. In rare cases, the editor may authorize the use of colour photographs, provided their inclusion is essential to clearly convey scientific information, and provided the authors agree to pay the regular page charges. Photographs or groups of photographs should not be larger than three times the size of the desired reproduction. Electronic files containing the figures, drawings or photographs may accompany the original paper copies in one of the following formats: .tif, .gif, .eps or .jpg. Scanning specifications: 300 dpi, grey scale, scanned at 100% or original size or greater.

(i) Supplementary Material: Tables of data, figures and long derivations, etc. which are not considered to be essential for understanding the text will be filed with: Depository for Unpublished Data, CISTI, National Research Council of Canada, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada K1A 0S2.
