About the journal
Published quarterly, BIOTROPICA, reaches over 1,500 subscribers around the world. Biotropica publishes reports of original research on the ecology and management of all tropical ecosystems and on the evolution, behavior, and population biology of tropical organisms. Special issues published from time to time quickly become indispensable references for workers in the field.
Instructions to Authors
General
Manuscripts for consideration in BIOTROPICA, may deal with any phase of tropical biology and related subjects so long as the primary emphasis is tropical and biological. Preference will be given to papers devoted to the presentation and discussion of original research or to those containing significant review and interpretive qualities. Articles should be general enough to have some interest to tropical biologists at large and yet they should be sufficiently substantive to attract the specialist with contents of lasting value and significance for tropical biology. BIOTROPICA, allows 10 free published pages for members of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation (senior authors only), though voluntary contributions are most welcome. Page charges may be waived in some situations.
Manuscripts should be addressed to btedoneline() Robin L. Chazdon, Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, University of Connecticut, 75 North Eagleville Road, Unit 3043, Storrs, CT 06269-3043, U.S.A. Tel: 860 486 0844. Fax: 860 486 6364. e-mail:biotropica@uconn.edu In your cover letter, please include your electronic mail address for correspondence. Also include the number of pages of text (including Literature Cited), figures, and tables and a list of potential reviewers that would be appropriate for your manuscript.
Preparation of Manuscript
Papers should be typewritten with wide margins and double-spacing throughout. Tables, figures (a separate page for the legends), and literature citations must follow text on separate sheets. Submit three copies of the entire manuscript, plus a diskette file of the text and a separate file of the table(s). Copies may be double-sided (TEXT ONLY). All pages should be numbered. In addition, each line on a page (including the abstract) should be numbered to facilitate the review process. Do not send original illustrations until after acceptance
Form and Style
Form and style can be determined from a recent issue of BIOTROPICA, or see the pre-publication checklist. Although most submitted papers are in the English language, manuscripts using Spanish, Portuguese, German, or French may be submitted.
Abstracts
English abstracts are required (250 word limit for papers and 75 word limit for notes), and we strongly encourage inclusion of abstracts in the language of the country in which the research was conducted.
Tables
Tables should appear on separate sheets, numbered, and cited using Arabic numerals. Footnotes to titles and other parts of tables should be referred to using lower-case letters. Each table should be cited in the text. Double-space tables in the manuscript.
Illustrations
Drawings should be made using India ink. They need to be no more than 50 percent larger than the final printed size. Drawings to be grouped should be carefully planned accordingly with attention given to scale and techniques.
Numerous separate illustrations cannot be accepted. All small illustrations must be economically grouped to occupy the least space consistent with good appearance. Line drawings and photographs must not be included in the same grouping owing to the different methods of reproduction. If small enough, grouped figures should be stacked, so they may fit into a single text column.
Figure legends should be grouped on a separate page.
