Types of Manuscripts
The editors will consider papers for publication based on novelty, their immediate or future impact on biotechnological processes, and their contribution to the advancement of biochemical engineering science. Submission of papers dealing with routine aspects of bioprocessing, description of established equipment, and routine applications of established methodologies (e.g., control strategies, modeling, experimental methods) are discouraged. Theoretical papers will be judged based on the novelty of the approach and their potential impact, or on their novel capability to predict and elucidate experimental observations.
Full papers should not generally exceed 22 double-spaced pages of text (not including references) and should contain no more than 15 figures and/or tables.
Communications are short papers on a single issue or follow-up papers with comments on a previously published paper in B&B. They should not exceed 9 double-spaced pages of text and should contain no more than 5 figures and/or tables.
Accelerated Publications, reporting new findings of unusual and timely significance will, after critical review, be considered for accelerated publication. Authors should include a brief description of the reasons why the manuscript is suitable for "fast tracking" in their letter of transmittal accompanying the manuscript upon original submission. The names, addressses (including e-mail), telephone, and fax numbers of five potential reviewers must also be included with the submission. The Editor and/or the Associate Editors will select manuscripts suitable for fast tracking.
Rapid Communications, reporting new findings of unusual and timely significance will, after critical review, be considered for accelerated publication. Authors should include a brief description of the reasons why the manuscript is suitable for "fast tracking" in their letter of transmittal accompanying the manuscript upon initial submission. The names, addresses (including e-mail), telephone, and fax numbers of five potential reviews must also be included with the submission. The Editor and/or the Associate Editors will select manuscripts suitable for fast tracking.
Reviews and Mini reviews should be concise and critical assessments of the recent literature on a fast-moving area of contemporary interest. Reviews should be of the same length as full papers. Mini reviews should not exceed 10 double-spaced pages of text, and should not contain more than 60 references and 5 figures and/or tables. Authors must contact the editor on the suitability of a subject and the qualifications of the authors before submitting a review or mini review. Exceptions to the lengths of the various types of manuscripts will be considered on an individual basis upon request by the authors. The authors must explain clearly, upon manuscript submission, the reasons for the longer manuscript.
It is an editorial policy that regarding serial papers which must be reviewed together, no more than two manuscripts may be submitted at the same time.
Copyright and Editorial Policy
No article can be published unless accompanied by a copyright transfer agreement. A copy of this agreement appears in most issues of the journal. Additional copies are available from the Editor. The agreement must be signed by the author upon submission. If the paper is a "work made for hire," the agreement must be signed by the employer.
Manuscripts submitted to B&B must represent original research or original review or mini review on subjects within the scope of the journal as outlined in the Scope section. All authors must agree to its submission to B&B and to the implications of this submission as described below. All authors are responsible for the complete contents of their manuscript. By its submission to B&B, all the authors guarantee that the manuscript, in its present or a substantially similar form, has not been published or is not being considered for publication elsewhere. Publication in any reasonably retrievable source constitutes prior publication. Meeting abstracts or preprints do not constitute prior publication.
It is the authors' responsibility to obtain permissions for reproduction of figures, tables, or text from published work. The publisher of a journal or book is the copyright owner from whom the written permission must be obtained. Permission from authors is also encouraged as a professional courtesy.
Revised manuscripts must be returned within 10 weeks upon receiving notification with the reviews by an editor. Otherwise, they will be considered withdrawn and treated as new manuscripts upon resubmission.
Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author who must be identified on the title page. Page charges will not be made. Twentyfive free reprints for each published paper will be made available.
Submission
All manuscripts for submission and correspondence concerning manuscripts under review should be sent to Biotechnology & Bioengineering, Editorial Receiving Office, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 111 River Street, Hoboken, New Jersey 07030; Tel. (201) 748-6297; Fax (201) 748-8881; biotechbioeng@wiley.com. All other correspondence should be addressed to the Publisher, Biotechnology & Bioengineering, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 111 River Street, Hoboken, New Jersey 07030. Manuscripts and artwork will not be returned following publication unless a request for return is made when the manuscript is originally submitted.
New Manuscripts. Biotechnology & Bioengineering is now pleased to offer web-based submissions and peer review. While print submissions are still accepted, it is strongly encouraged that the online venue be used for all new submissions. Please log on to http://bit-wiley.manuscriptcentral.com/ and follow the instructions found at the beginning of Instructions to Authors.
In the event that authors choose not to use this method, two copies of the manuscript (including all figures and tables), a separate set of original figures, and the Copyright Transfer Agreement should be submitted. An electronic form of the manuscript and letter of transmittal must accompany the submission. Disk Submission Instructions can be found below.
The manuscript should be accompanied by a letter of transmittal which should include (1) the title of the manuscript and all author(s) name(s), and (2) a brief statement of the important contributions of the submitted paper. In order to assist and expedite the review process, the authors are requested to submit the names and complete addresses of four possible independent reviewers outside their own institution (please include e-mail addresses whenever possible). The authors may request that certain reviewers be excluded from reviewing their paper if they feel that these reviewers may be unfavorably biased.
Manuscripts should be submitted typed, double spaced (including References, Tables, Appendixes, and the List of Figures) on one side only on paper as close as possible to U.S. standard 8-1/2 x 11-in. (21.5 x 28-cm) paper with 1-in. (2.5-cm) margins. It is the preference of the Editors that all manuscripts be submitted in English. Authors in Japan please note: Wiley-Japan can provide authors in Japan with a list of recommended services to check and improve the English in their papers BEFORE SUBMISSION. Please contact Masayo Kobayashi in the Wiley-Japan office by Fax: 81 3 3556 9763 or E-mail: editorial@wiley.co.jp for more information, stating the Wiley journal you wish to submit to. All pages of the manuscript (including tables, lists of figures, and figures) should be numbered. Figure copies to be used for the review must clearly identify each figure by its number. Photographs (of polyacrylamide gels, for example) with details important to the review should be submitted in triplicates in addition to the originals.
Revised Manuscripts. When revisions are requested by an Editor, submit two complete copies of the revised manuscript and one copy of the original version. These copies should be accompanied by a transmittal letter and a detailed response to the issues raised by the reviewers and Editor, as well as a concise outline of the manuscript revisions. Figure originals, a new copyright agreement (if the title has been changed or no agreement was mailed to the editor upon the submission of the original version), and any permissions to reproduce previously published tables or figures should be included. Revised manuscripts should be returned within 10 weeks after notification. Otherwise they will be considered withdrawn and subsequently treated as new submissions.
When a revised manuscript is resubmitted following rejection of an original version, the manuscript will be treated as a new submission. It is up to the discretion of the editors to reconsider such revised manuscripts. Please include four copies of the revised manuscript, two copies of the original version, a letter of transmittal explaining why a revised manuscript should be reconsidered by the editors, a detailed response to the issues raised by the reviewers and the editor for the original version, a concise outline of the revisions, figure originals, and the copyright agreement.
Final Revised Manuscript. A final version of your accepted manuscript should be submitted on diskette as well as hard copy, using the guidelines outlined in Diskette Submission Instructions included in most issues of the journal.
Manuscript Organization
All manuscripts should have a separate (title) page with the title of the paper, the names and affiliations of all authors, the name, address, phone number (and FAX and e-mail addresses if available) of the corresponding author, and a short running title of no more than 55 characters.
Full papers should contain the following: A Summary not exceeding 300 words, Introduction, Materials and Methods (including computational methods), Modeling or Theoretical Aspects (optional), Results, Discussion, Conclusions (optional), Acknowledgments (optional), Nomenclature (optional), and References.
Communications should contain: a Summary of no more than 100 words, a brief Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Acknowledgments (optional), and References. Communications are subjected to the same review process as full papers, and they should not constitute preliminary investigations.
Reviews and Mini reviews should contain a Summary (of no more than 300 words for reviews and not exceeding 100 words for mini reviews), a brief Introduction, appropriate subsections for various topics, Conclusions, Future Directions, Acknowledgments, and References.
For all types of manuscripts, 3-6 key words or phrases that best characterize the manuscript should be provided following the Summary. For all types of manuscripts, the list of References should be followed by the Tables, the List of Figures with their legends, and finally the numbered copies of the figures. Acknowledgments of personal or financial assistance should be made in a separate paragraph following the Discussion and Conclusions sections.
For full manuscripts, supplementary material of theoretical or experimental nature can be presented in the form of Appendixes. Appendixes follow the Discussion and Conclusions sections.
The title should be specific, informative and as short as possible. The Summary of the main contributions in the manuscript should be carefully prepared, for it will automatically be the source of most abstracts. The main text of the paper should be reasonably subdivided into subsections as necessary by inserting appropriate headings. Please refer to any issue of B&B for examples. Do not use footnotes in the text. The Erratum section allows authors to correct inadvertent (e.g., typographical) errors in published papers. Changes or additions to the manuscript and its data are not permitted. Errata should be submitted directly to the publisher.
References
Wiley's Journal Styles Are Now in EndNote EndNote is a software product that we recommend to our journal authors to help simplify and streamline the research process. Using EndNote's bibliographic management tools, you can search bibliographic databases, build and organize your reference collection, and then instantly output your bibliography in any Wiley journal style.
Download Reference Style for this Journal: If you already use EndNote, you can download the reference style for this journal.
How to Order: To learn more about EndNote, or to purchase your own copy, click here.
Technical Support: If you need assistance using EndNote, contact endnote@isiresearchsoft.com, or visit www.endnote.com/support.
The list of References should include all relevant and necessary published work, and all listed references must be cited in the text. The reference list should be arranged in alphabetical order by first author. Do not use numbers. In the text, references should be cited by the author's surname with year of publication in parentheses. For more than two authors, e.g., Briggs, Porter, and King (1993), the reference citation in the text would be Briggs, et al. (1993). If there is more than one citation in the same place, put the different citations in parentheses, in alphabetical order, and separated by a semicolon, e.g., (Adam, 1995; Dorow and O'Neal, 1974). Journal titles should be abbreviated according to the Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index.
The listed references should include only published journal papers, books, book chapters, and Ph.D. theses and dissertations. Manuscripts in preparation or submitted, abstracts, meeting presentations, editorials, patents, M.S. theses, letters to the editor, published science briefings, and in general all other published material that has not been edited or refereed should not be listed in the References. Such material can be mentioned parenthetically in the text. If an "in press" publication is included in the list of References, four copies must be submitted with the manuscript, so that this reference can become available to the reviewers. For reference citations, follow the styles of the examples below:

Tables. Tables should be numbered with capital Roman numerals in the order they appear in the text. All table columns should have an explanatory heading. Duplication of information contained in tables and figures should be avoided as much as possible. Long tables containing a large amount of information can be avoided by showing only typical or the most important results.
Figures and Illustrations. Please supply legends for all figures and compile these on a separate sheet following the tables. It is particularly important that all figures be submitted in a form suitable for reproduction. In order to economize printed space, all graphs and photographs should be prepared so that they can normally be printed in a single column. Only if absolutely necessary should figures occupy both columns. The width of a single column is 3 5/16 inches, and 6 7/8 (maximum) for the double column. Good glossy prints of all photographs are required. Continuous-tone photographs (e.g., of polyacrylamide gels) should have sufficient contrast because of some loss of contrast upon publication. Four copies of continuous-tone photographs should be submitted (one set of originals and three additional prints for the review process). Photocopies of such photographs are not acceptable. The authors are requested to submit continuous-tone photographs in the size they will appear when published, so that no reduction is necessary.
All color figures will be reproduced in full color in the online edition of the journal at no cost to authors. Authors are requested to pay the cost of reproducing color figures in print. Authors are encouraged to submit color illustrations that highlight the text and convey essential scientific information. For best reproduction, bright, clear colors should be used. Dark colors against a dark background do not reproduce well; please place your color images against a white background wherever possible. Please contact Merilee Croft Olson at 212-850-6133; mcroft@wiley.com for further information. Color proofs will be sent to the contributor for approval prior to printing.
For line drawings (graphs, etc.) the figures must be drawn clearly with India ink on heavy white paper. Computer generated graphs are acceptable only if they have been printed with a good quality laser or pen printer on good quality paper and have acceptable standard lettering. Good quality glossy photographs of original drawings are also acceptable. The lettering of graphs must be large, clear, and "open" so that letters and numbers do not fill in when reduced for publication. It is the usual practice to submit drawings that are twice the size of the final figures. The authors are requested to test their drawings for clarity and readability by reducing them to 50% using a copy machine. As requested above, authors should prepare the graphs so that they can normally be printed in one column. The editor will allow the use of two columns for graphs or photographs upon request on an individual basis.
The figure number and the last names of authors should be written on the figure originals, either in the margin or on the back. A soft pencil should be used. Also, use an arrow to indicate the top of a photograph or graph. Figure originals should be submitted in an envelope, and protected (especially the glossy prints) from sticking together.
Cover Illustrations. Authors may submit color figures for use as cover illustrations. These illustrations may be related to, but not necessarily included in, their manuscript. Alternatively, authors may submit figures which portray the fields of biotechnology and bioengineering at the molecular, cellular, bench-top, or production level as possible cover illustrations in keeping with the general themes of the journal. Authors should submit a brief description of their illustration if it is not included in their manuscript.
Symbols and Nomenclature. Authors are cautioned to type -- wherever possible -- all mathematical and chemical symbols, equations, and formulas. If these must be handwritten, please write clearly and leave ample space above and below for printer's marks; please use only ink. All Greek or unusual symbols should be identified in the margin the first time they are used. Distinguish in the margins of the manuscript between capital and small letters of the alphabet wherever confusion may arise (e.g., k, K, ). Please underline with a wavy line all vector quantities. Use fractional exponents to avoid root signs. The nomenclature sponsored by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry is requested for chemical compounds. Chemical bonds should be correctly placed, and double bonds clearly indicated. Valence is to be indicated by superscript plus and minus signs.
All necessary quantities should be defined with units compatible with the SI system. If many symbols are used in the text and in equations, it is advisable to assemble the definitions and units of all symbols in a Nomenclature section just before the list of References. Symbols should be assembled alphabetically. Greek and unusual symbols should be assembled separately.
Manuscripts and illustrations not conforming to the style of B&B will be returned to the author for reworking, thus delaying their appearance.
Submission of Protein Structures
Authors are expected to deposit the coordinates for new protein structures in the Protein Data Bank (http://www.rcsb.org/pdb/) and include the assigned identification codes in the manuscript.
Submission of Sequence Data
The Editors encourage the use of widely accessible genetics databases as repositories for newly determined nucleotide and/or amino acid sequence data. Authors should always include the appropriate database (e.g., GenBank) accession number(s) in the Materials and Methods section of the manuscript.
Deposition of Cultures
Authors are encouraged to deposit important strains in publicly accessible culture collections and include the collection and strain designations in the text of the manuscript.
Supplemental Online Material
Authors are invited to submit supplementary material for their articles to be posted in the electronic version of the JOURNAL on Wiley Interscience (http://www.interscience.wiley.com/jpages/0006-3592/). Supplementary material may include (but is not limited to) video clips, analytical and spectral characterization data, crystallographic information files, large sections of tabular data, derivations, program code, or electronic graphical files that are otherwise not suitable for print media.
When submitting material for consideration, please follow the guidelines below:
1. Peer review. Supplementary material must be submitted at the time of peer review. Submit a paper copy of the material (in the case of material that exists in electronic form only, please consult the Editor).
2. Acceptance and electronic submission. Once material has been accepted by the Editor, it must be submitted in electronic form on PC or Macintosh 3.5' diskette or zip disk. All files submitted must be accompanied by a text file named README. The README file should include the following information:
Title of Paper Authors and their affiliations Filename, file size, file type Brief description of material
The data and the README file should be archived together using one of the popular archive protocols such as ZIP, TAR, GZIP, or SIT. If you have more than one piece of supplementary material, you should submit a separate archive for each, with an accompanying README file; however, if it is intended that the multiple files be downloaded as a single unit by the enduser, submit one archive and one README file.
3. Data file types. There are no restrictions on filetypes of the data that you submit. Please keep in mind, however, that the more universal the filetype the more accessible it is to the community. The use of popular compression protocols is highly encouraged. If your material is presented in PostScript format, the submission of an accompanying Adobe Acrobat PDF file is encouraged. In that event both formats will be offered to the JOURNAL's readers. In cases where PDF files do not accompany a PostScript file, only the Postscript will be offered.
4. Publication and Access. Supplementary material for published articles will be made available via the online edition.
Disk Submission Instructions
Please return your final, revised manuscript on disk as well as hard copy. The hard copy must match the disk.
The Journal strongly encourages authors to deliver the final, revised version of their accepted manuscripts (text, tables, and, if possible, illustrations) on disk. Given the near-universal use of computer word-processing for manuscript preparation, we anticipate that providing a disk will be convenient for you, and it carries the added advantages of maintaining the integrity of your keystrokes and expediting typesetting. Please return the disk submission slip below with your manuscript and labeled disk(s).
Guidelines for Electronic Submission
Text
Storage medium. 3-1/2" high-density disk in IBM MS-DOS, Windows, or Macintosh format.
Software and format. Microsoft Word 6.0 is preferred, although manuscripts prepared with any other microcomputer word processor are acceptable. Refrain from complex formatting; the Publisher will style your manuscript according to the Journal design specifications. Do not use desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker or Quark XPress. If you prepared your manuscript with one of these programs, export the text to a word processing format. Please make sure your word processing program's "fast save" feature is turned off. Please do not deliver files that contain hidden text: for example, do not use your word processor's automated features to create footnotes or reference lists.
File names. Submit the text and tables of each manuscript as a single file. Name each file with your last name (up to eight letters). Text files should be given the three-letter extension that identifies the file format. Macintosh users should maintain the MS-DOS "eight dot three" file-naming convention.
Labels. Label all disks with your name, the file name, and the word processing program and version used.
Illustrations All print reproduction requires files for full color images to be in a CMYK color space. If possible, ICC or ColorSync profiles of your output device should accompany all digital image submissions.
Storage medium. Submit as separate files from text files, on separate disks or cartridges. If feasible, full color files should be submitted on separate disks from other image files. 3-1/2" high-density disks, CD, Iomega Zip, and 5 1/4" 44- or 88-MB SyQuest cartridges can be submitted. At authors' request, cartridges and disks will be returned after publication.
Software and format. All illustration files should be in TIFF or EPS (with preview) formats. Do not submit native application formats.
Resolution. Journal quality reproduction will require greyscale and color files at resolutions yielding approximately 300 ppi. Bitmapped line art should be submitted at resolutions yielding 600-1200 ppi. These resolutions refer to the output size of the file; if you anticipate that your images will be enlarged or reduced, resolutions should be adjusted accordingly.
File names. Illustration files should be given the 2- or 3-letter extension that identifies the file format used (i.e., .tif, .eps).
Labels. Label all disks and cartridges with your name, the file names, formats, and compression schemes (if any) used. Hard copy output must accompany all files.
