About the journal

 The American Journal of Medicine®

The American Journal of Medicine - "The Green Journal" - publishes original clinical research of interest to physicians in internal medicine, both in academia and community-based practice. The official journal of The Association of Professors of Medicine, The Green Journal welcomes concise, well-written manuscripts devoted to internal medicine and its specialties, particularly:

  • Studies performed by multi-center groups in the various disciplines of medicine, including clinical trials and cohort studies from large patient populations.
  • Phase I, phase II, and phase III studies performed under the auspices of groups such as general clinical research centers, cooperative oncology groups, and the like.
  • Reports of patients with common presentations or diseases, especially studies that delineate the natural history of important conditions.
  • Careful physiological or pharmacological studies that explain normal function or the body's response to disease.
  • Analytic reviews such as meta-analyses and decision analyses that use a formal structure to summarize an important field.

For information about submissions, please see the Instructions to Authors. The American Journal of Medicine's web site allows authors to access the Journal'smanuscript tracking system for updates on the status of their manuscripts. The journal's interactive site, AJMSelect, features full-text articles, including the "Case of the Month" and "Diagnostic Dilemma", in which users are challenged to provide a diagnosis; and the "Journal Club," in which the editors present expert monthly discussion of an article from the print version. Access AJMSelect at External link http://www.ajmselect.com/ . Paid personal subscribers to The American Journal of Medicine automatically have unlimited access to full-text articles.
Paid subscribers can also access the site through External link http://www.cardiosource.com , an information site for cardiovascular specialists.

Instructions to Authors

The editors of The American Journal of Medicine® welcome concise articles devoted to internal medicine and its specialties. Articles must be contributed solely to The American Journal of Medicine® and become the property of the publisher. Statements contained therein are the responsibility of the author(s). The publisher reserves copyright and renewal on all published material, and such material may not be reproduced in any form without the written permission of the publisher.

MANUSCRIPTS

  • Address manuscripts to Lee Goldman, MD, Warren Browner, MD, MPH, Editors, The American Journal of Medicine, Box 0121, University of California at San Francisco, San Francisco, CA 94143-0121. Express deliveries should be sent to Warren Browner, MD, MPH, American Journal of Medicine, 432-A Irving Street, San Francisco, CA 94122. Manuscripts may be submitted electronically as an e-mail attachment to ajm@medicine.ucsf.edu. Electronic submissions should be formatted for US Letter (8.5 X 11 inches).
  • A cover letter, signed by the first author and corresponding author, should accompany the manuscript. It should include the name, mailing address, telephone and FAX numbers, and e-mail address, if available, of the corresponding author. In the cover letter, indicate the category of manuscript (Clinical Study, Review, Special Article, Brief Observation, Letter). Suggestions for potential reviewers are welcome. Case reports will not be considered; however, brief reports that may be appropriate for the Case of the Month series may be submitted.
  • The cover letter must attest that the manuscript represents original work, and that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. The cover letter should also state all authors meet criteria for authorship and that the authors will sign a statement attesting authorship, disclosing all potential conflicts of interest, and releasing the copyright should the manuscript be acceptable for publication. Potential conflicts of interest for all authors should be discussed. An electronic cover letter from the corresponding author is acceptable for manuscripts submitted via e-mail or the Web.
  • Each author must have participated in the writing of the manuscript, and have seen and approved the submitted version. Further, each author should have been involved in the conception and design of the study, or the analysis of the data.
  • Authors of research articles should disclose any affiliation with any organization with a financial interest, direct or indirect, in the subject matter or materials discussed in the manuscript (ie, consultancies, employment, expert testimony, honoraria, retainers, stock) that may affect the conduct or reporting of the work submitted. If uncertain as to what might be considered a potential conflict of interest, authors should err on the side of full disclosure. Because reviews and editorials are based on selection and interpretation of the literature, the Journal expects that authors of such articles will not have any financial interest in a company (or its competitor) that makes a product discussed in the article.
  • Information about potential conflict of interest will be made available to reviewers and will be published with the manuscript at the discretion of the editors.
  • Potential authors who have questions about these issues should contact the editorial office at (415) 447-6100.
  • Requirements for manuscripts are in accord with the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals. For more information, refer to the following: International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals. Ann Intern Med. 1997; 126:36-47.
  • Submit five copies of all elements: text, references, legends, tables, and figures.
  • Only a single copy, with a cover letter, need be submitted electronically. Electronic submission should be formatted for US Letter (8.5 X 11 inches).
  • Arrange the paper in this order: (1) title page; (2) abstract; (3) text; (4) references; (5) tables; and (6) figures and legends.
  • Number all pages in sequence, beginning with the title page as 1, abstract as 2, etc.
  • Begin each section of the manuscript on a new page.
  • Put the name of the first author on each page.
  • Type all matter: (1) on standard-size white bond paper; (2) on one side of each sheet only; (3) double-spaced; (4) with wide margins on all four sides.
  • Brief Observations must be limited to 1000 words. Review articles must not exceed 30 typed double-spaced pages, including the title page, and the number of references should be limited to no more than 100.

TITLE PAGE AND ABSTRACT

  • Include first and last names and middle initial of all authors, highest academic degrees, the name of the department(s) and institution(s) from which the work originated, and the name, address, e-mail address, and telephone and fax numbers of the author to whom reprint requests should be addressed.
  • Provide three to six key words.
  • For clinical studies, a structured abstract should be submitted. It should contain the following clearly labeled elements: Purpose, Subjects and Methods (or Materials and Methods), Results, and Conclusion.
  • Provide an abstract with reviews and special articles.
  • Abstracts should be no more than 250 words long.

TEXT

  • Limit use of acronyms or abbreviations to units of measurement.
  • Measurements of length, height, weight, and volume should be reported in metric units (meter, kilogram, liter) or their decimal multiples. Temperatures should be given in degrees Celsius. Blood pressures should be given in millimeters of mercury.
  • Cite in numerical order every reference, figure, and table. (Order of mention in text determines the number given to each.)
  • Acknowledgments, including grant support, should be placed at the end of the text.<

    REFERENCES

    • Number in order of mention.
    • Provide complete concluding page numbers for all journal references and specific page numbers for all book references. Indicate all abstracts and letters.
    • Follow general arrangement, abbreviations, and punctuation as given in Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals. For periodicals, follow INDEX MEDICUS, listing all authors when four or fewer; when five or more, list only first three and add et al.
    • Personal communications are discouraged. If included, they must be noted parenthetically in the text, dated by month and year, and accompanied by a written acknowledgment.
    • Please note that no periods are used after authors' initials.

    TABLES

    • Start each table at top of new page.
    • Give each table a title. Number them (in arabic numerals, Table 1, 2, etc.) in the order in which they are mentioned in the text.
    • Provide a footnote to each table, identifying all abbreviations used.

    FIGURES AND FIGURE LEGENDS

    • Submit five glossy prints (not originals) of each photo and drawing.
    • Laser quality figures may be submitted. Use one figure per page, with the legend printed below the figure.
    • Label glossy figures on back by number and first author's name; indicate top.

    • Please note that artwork of published articles will not be returned.

    • Use black ink for all charts (line drawings). Make decimals, broken lines, etc., strong enough for reproduction.

    • All lettering should be of approximately equal size.

    • Use arrows to designate special features.

    • Submit high-contrast prints for roentgenographic photographs; some detail is lost in reproduction.

    • Crop photomicrographs to show only essential field.

    • Titles should be included in the figure legend, not in the figure.

    • Number figures in order in which they are mentioned in the text, using arabic numerals (Figure 1, 2, etc.).

    • Identify at the end of each legend all abbreviations used in the figure.

    • Indicate staining method and magnification for all photomicrographs.

    • If figure legends are submitted separately from the figures, they should be listed in order on a single page.

    • Submit written permission from publisher and author to reproduce any previously published figures.

    RAPID REVIEW

The editors will try to make a preliminary decision concerning the potential suitability of a manuscript for the Journal within a few days, and to obtain peer review expeditiously. Electronic submission of manuscripts will facilitate this process.
