About the journal
Emphasizing contributions that represent significant advances in all areas of pure mathematics, Advances in Mathematics provides research mathematicians with an effective medium for communicating important recent developments in their areas of specialization to colleagues and to scientists in related disciplines.
Instructions to Authors
Submission of Manuscripts Clarity of exposition, readability, and timeliness of the contents are the prime criteria in accepting papers submitted for publication. Original papers only will be considered. Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that the same work has not been and will not be nor is currently submitted elsewhere, and that its submission for publication has been approved by all of the authors and by the institution where the work was carried out; further, that any person cited as a source of personal communications has approved such citation. Written authorization may be required at the Editor's discretion. Articles and any other material published in Advances in Mathematics represent the opinions of the author(s) and should not be construed to reflect the opinions of the Editor(s) and the Publisher.Include three copies. Please indicate the name of one or two Editors from the board who would be best suited to supervise the review process for your manuscript.
Electronic Transmission Authors are requested to transmit the text and art of the manuscript in electronic form, via either computer disk or FTP, each time a new version is submitted. Hard-copy printouts of the manuscript and art that exactly match the electronic files must be supplied. The manuscript will be edited according to the style of the journal, and the proofs must be read carefully by the author.
Copyright Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that if it is accepted for publication, copyright in the article, including the right to reproduce the article in all forms and media, shall be assigned exclusively to the Publisher. The Copyright Transfer Agreement, should be signed by the appropriate person(s). Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reprint previously published figures, tables and other material.
Manuscripts should be prepared according to the following style rules (deviation from these rules causes publication delays):
Form of Manuscript Submit manuscripts in triplicate, including the original copy (preferably triple-spaced but at least double-spaced), on one side of 8.5 x 11-inch white paper. Number each page. Page 1 should contain the article title, author and coauthor names, and complete affiliation(s) (name of institution, city, state, and zip code), and e-mail address(es). At the bottom of page 1, place any footnotes to the title (indicated by superscript Arabic numerals, e.g., 1, 2, 3). Page 1 should also contain the name and mailing address of the author to whom proofs should be sent.
Abstract The inclusion of an abstract is optional. If the author submits an abstract, it should be typed on page 2 and should be 50-150 words.
Tables Number tables consecutively with Arabic numerals. Extensive tables will be reproduced photographically and so should be typed carefully and in the exact format desired. Use superscript lowercase letters for table footnotes, which should be typed immediately below the table. Type tables at least double-spaced, including titles and footnotes.
Equations The equation number should be placed in parentheses at the right margin. Reference to equations should use the form "Eq. (3)' or simply (3).
References should be styled and punctuated according to the following examples. Cite references in the text by an Arabic number between square brackets, as [1], [1, 2], [1, Theorem 1.5], etc. Type references double- or triple-spaced throughout. When citing an Academic Press journal, authors may choose to include the DOI, if available, from the article's title page.
Please note the following examples:
[1] R. A. Zalik, Integral representation of Markov systems and the existence of adjoined functions for Haar spaces, J. Approx. Theory 65 (1991), 22-31. [2] A. G. Ramm, Multidimensional Inverse Scattering Problems, Longman/Wiley, New York, 1992. [3] P.C. Doubilet, G.-C. Rota, R.P. Stanley, The idea of generating function, in: G.-C.Rota (Ed.), Finite Operator Calculus, Academic Press, New York, 1975. pp. 83-134
For unpublished lectures or symposia, include title of the paper, name of the sponsoring society in full, and date. For journal names, follow "Abbreviations of Names of Serials reviewed in Mathematical Reviews" (American Mathematical Society, 1995).
Footnotes in text should be avoided if at all possible. If they must be used, identify by superscript numbers and type together on a separate page, double- or triple-spaced.
Figures All illustrations are to be considered figures. Number each graph or drawing in sequence with Arabic numerals. Supply a descriptive legend for each figure. Type legends double- or triple-spaced consecutively on a separate sheet. Figures must be submitted in a form suitable for reproduction. Plan figures to fit the proportions of the printed page. Identify each figure with the name of the journal, author's name, and figure number; avoid marking the backs of figures.
Color Illustrations Illustrations in color can be accepted if the clarity of the presentation is significantly increased and if the authors defray the cost of publishing color in print.
Proofs Proofs will be sent to the author, with a reprint order form. Authors will be charged for alterations in excess of 10% of the cost of composition.
