About the journal

ACTA VETERINARIA BRNO is a scientific journal of the University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Brno, Czech Republic.

 

The most recent Impact Factor for Acta Veterinaria Brno is 0.534 according to 2010 Journal Citation Reports released by Thomson Reuters (ISI) in 2011.

 

The scientific journal Acta Veterinaria Brno is dedicated to the publication of original research findings and clinical observations in veterinary and biomedical sciences. Original scientific research articles reporting new and substantial contribution to veterinary science and original methods that have not been submitted for publication elsewhere are considered for publication. A written statement to this effect should accompany the manuscript, along with approval for publication by the author´s head of department. The authors bear full responsibility for the contents of their contribution. Book reviews are published, too.


Instructions to Authors

The scientific journal Acta Veterinaria Brno is dedicated to the publication of original research articles and clinical studies (the first reports of the author’s own work), review articles (based largely on other scientist’s work), in veterinary and biomedical sciences.

 

Conditions

Manuscript has not been published, submitted, or already accepted for publication in whole or in part, elsewhere

Manuscript must be approved in its final form by all authors

Manuscript must be approved in its final form by the corresponding author's head of the department

Animals must be treated in respect to animal welfare and under regulations of the respective country

 

Manuscripts are submitted electronically to (http://actaveterinaria.vedeckecasopisy.cz)

 

Manuscript must be accompanied by scanned documents:

declaration concerning the above Conditions, signed by each co-author

declaration signed by the corresponding author’s head of department

approval of the ethics committee under which the study on animals was carried out (if animals were used in this study)

copyright permission (if illustration is reproduced from a published article or other material)

 

Procedure

The Editor-in-Chief reserves the right to reject a manuscript that is not within the scope of the journal, does not meet the standards and requirements for publication, or a paper based on work that involves unnecessary pain, distress, suffering or lasting harm.

Manuscript is independently reviewed by two reviewers that are anonymous to authors. In case of doubt, further expert opinions may be required. It is possible and preferable that the authors suggest the name and contact of one of the two reviewers themselves (the Editorial Board will take it into consideration).

Opinions of reviewers and commentary of Editor-in-Chief will be sent to the author.

The manuscript revised according to the comments of reviewers and Editor-in-Chief should be submitted again within two months together with a cover letter describing in detail the corrections made and responding to the commentary of reviewers and Editor-in-Chief.

The final decision concerning a revised manuscript is the responsibility of the Editorial Board.

The proof will be sent as PDF file by E-mail to the corresponding author. The proofs must be returned immediately. Corrections other than typesetting errors cannot be accepted.

There is a charge of 8000 CZK (320 euros) per accepted and printed article. This charge must be paid to the University account before printing!

Manuscript will be published both in the journal and on-line (http://vfu-www.vfu.cz/acta-vet/index.html).

 

Manuscript must be prepared in the standard format for this journal following the Instructions how to prepare manuscript. Your manuscript will continue to be processed only after it is formally correct.

 

INSTRUCTIONS HOW TO PREPARE MANUSCRIPT

The manuscript should not exceed maximum 8 standard pages (1500 to 1800 keystrokes), excluding title page, but including references, tables and figures. All pages should be numbered, with 2.5 cm margins and 1.5 spacing throughout. The text should be in Times New Roman with size 12.

English language should be checked by a native speaker

 

Title page

short but informative full title (small letters, without abbreviations, Latin names in italics)

whole names of authors (first names, middle and last names) and affiliation of each author

full postal address(es) of the institution(s) where the work was carried out

name, address, telephone, and E-mail of the corresponding author

 

Abstract

must provide information on the study including the aim, materials and methods, results and conclusion about the priority and about the significance of this study

no longer than 250 words

must be written in a way that can be understood by all readers and not only experts in the field

abbreviations and references should not be used

 

Keywords

max 6 words

do not repeat words from the title

 

Introduction

as short as possible

simply introduce the reader to the purpose and significance of the work

do not use many citations (only the important and relevant ones can be included)

citations must be ordered chronologically according year (see References)

 

Materials and Methods

include sufficient information for the reader to be able to replicate the work

techniques described in detail in other publications need not be repeated, major modifications to methods should be clearly described

the name and location of the manufacturer of drugs, reagents and special equipment should be provided

when using abbreviation, the term must be in full form followed by the abbreviation in parentheses, when it is first used

in case of Latin names, follow the International Rules for Nomenclature

use SI units

statistical treatment of data should be included

subtitles can be used if this part is too long

 

Results

include only actual results obtained (do not repeat information from the Materials and Methods section)

where more informative, use tables and figures but avoid repetition of data

do not include tables or figures in text, just mark their placement in text

 

Discussion

should interpret and evaluate the results clearly and concisely, and be as short as possible

do not repeat data from the Introduction or Results

use citations correctly (ordered according to year), only up-to-date and important ones

citations must be ordered chronologically (see References)

a conclusion or recommendation can be added at the end of Discussion

 

Acknowledgements

should be brief, and acknowledge only direct contribution to the work reported, financial or other support

provide details of the sources of financial support, including grant number

 

References

list of references must be as short as possible, including only the important ones

only references to published work or work actually “in press” are permitted (avoid using “unpublished data“ or “personal communications“)

abstracts from local seminars, conferences, local prints etc. that are difficult to locate should be limited to a minimum (English title should be provided in parentheses)

list of references must be alphabetically ordered

include names of all authors, abbreviation of journal according to the style used in the Web of Knowledge; journal volume must be in bold

 

References in the text

references should be ordered chronologically in the text

examples how to write citations: Linden (1999), Linden and Harewood (1998), Linden et al. (1998), Linden et al. (1998b), .......(Linden et al. 1998, 1999; Harewood and McGowan 2005)

Tables

each table must be headed by a self-explanatory title (without abbreviations) and numbered consecutively

vertical lines are not permitted, horizontal lines in minimum just to separate title and whole table

do not repeat data from results

all abbreviations used in table must be explained under table

do not use bold letters

all tables must be referred to in text as Table 1, etc.

 

Figures (including Graphs and Photographs)

send the figures in format: gif, png or jpg and the photographs in original form: jpg, tiff

each figure (graph, photograph) must be headed by a self-explanatory title (without abbreviation) and numbered consecutively

do not repeat data from results

all abbreviations used in figure must be explained under figure

component parts of figures can be labelled A, B, C etc.

no 3-dimensional or colour graphs should be used

photographs must be of good quality (the final decision for use of photographs will depend on the decision of editor)

for microscopical preparations, scale bars with appropriate units must be provided

symbols, arrows or letters used in photographs should contrast with the background

all figures must be referred to in text as Fig. 1, etc.

if illustration is reproduced from a published article or other material, a letter of copyright permission must be sent
