About the journal

The Journal of the Polish Biochemical Society and of the Committee of Biochemistry and Biophysics Polish Academy of Sciences.

Acta Biochimica Polonica is a journal covering enzymology and metabolism membranes and bioenergetics gene structure and expression protein nucleic acid and carbohydrate structure and metabolism. Acta Biochimica Polonica publishes research articles short communications review articles and book reviews.

Instructions to Authors

Acta Biochimica Polonica publishes experimental and theoretical papers in all areas of modern biochemistry, biophysics, and molecular biology. Full-length original papers (regular papers) and short communications, as well as review articles and book reviews are considered. Authors wishing to contribute a review paper are advised first to contact the Editor-in-Chief. Regular paper is the normal medium of publication with no fixed length, although it should be concise as possible, providing sufficient information. Short communications, describing novel, significant and complete observations, should contain up to 25000 characters (including spaces) in the text and no more than 4 figures and/or tables. All papers are published in either American or British English, provided that preferred spelling is used consistently throughout.
Submission of a paper for publication implies that it reports unpublished work, which is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. If the paper is accepted for Acta Biochimica Polonica it is not to be published elsewhere in the same form and in any language without permission of the Editor. It is assumed that the final manuscript has been accepted by all the authors.

   Preparation of Manuscripts

The manuscript should generally be assembled as described below. Short communications should be assembled like full-length papers, except length limitations described above and simplified citation of references. Review articles contain different section titles than those suggested for original articles.

Text

Text should be double-spaced throughout the whole manuscript. Margins should be of at least 2.5 cm on each side. All pages (including the title page) should be numbered. The text should be left-justified, and automatic end-of-line hyphenation should not be used. Carriage returns should be used only to end headings and paragraphs, not to break lines of text. All characters should be correctly represented, i.e. 1 (one) and l (ell), 0 (zero) and O (oh), x (ex) and ?(times sign).

Tables and Figures

Every table and figure should have a legend which consists of the title, followed by a description of experimental conditions so as to be intelligible without referring to the text, but the details given in Materials and Methods should not be repeated. Legends to tables should be provided above each table on the same page, however, figure legends should be provided on separate pages. Figure legends should also include explanation of the symbols used in figures. Figures (line drawings and photographs) should be suitable for reproduction. They should not exceed 16.5?4.0 cm but of the width not smaller than 8 cm. All art works should be identified with the authors' names and figure number on the margine. Lettering should be proportional to the size of the drawing. Lines (not less than 1 point) and lettering should be of uniform density.

Manuscript sections

TITLE PAGE (page 1) should provide: (i) A brief, informative title to be used in the classification and indexing of the paper. Abbreviations in the title should not be used. (ii) Full names of the authors (first name in full) with the name(s) of the laboratory or laboratories where the work was carried out. Present address(es), if different, should be given in a footnote. (iii) Name of the author to whom correspondence should be addressed, with phone, fax and e-mail information. (iv) Running title not exceeding 70 letters including spaces, easy to be placed at the top of the paper pages. (v) Key words (up to six words or short phrases). (vi) Abbreviations, excluding those already listed in Recommendations of the International Union of Biochemistry. Terms, irrespective of their length, that are used only once in the text, should not be abbreviated. The abbreviations have to facilitate reading of the paper, not its writing (vii) Information, if any, on a preliminary report on the same subject presented at scientific meetings. (viii) Acknowledgements of financial support, including the granting agency and the grant award identification number. Other acknowledgements should be given at the end of the Discussion section. (ix) Accession numbers of any new nucleotide or amino acid sequences reported in the manuscript.
ABSTRACT should consist of a self-explanatory text, suitable for direct reproduction, of not more than 250 words for regular papers and 100 words for short communications. It should state the problem, experimental approach, summary of most important results, and conclusions. If a reference is cited (only when absolutely necessary), complete bibliographic data must be given. Non-standard abbreviations should be avoided in the abstract. If used, they must be explained (in parentheses), irrespectively of their explanation in the title page.
INTRODUCTION should provide a background to the specific research area and describe the purpose of the research, with references to} other investigations in{\f6 the same field. However, extensive reviews of the literature should be avoided.
MATERIALS AND METHODS should contain description of materials and experimental procedures in a manner which enables others to repeat the experiments. Novel procedures should be given in detail, but published procedures should be referred to by literature citations (a brief description of a previously published procedure may, however, be helpful in some cases). A list of reagents should be limited to those which required special preparation, purification, or in author's opinion, a source of the chemicals is essential to the validity of the experimental results.
RESULTS should be presented in a concise manner. The use of both tables and figures for presentation of the same data is not acceptable.
DISCUSSION should not contain a summary of the results but solely their interpretation. Joint presentation of the Results and Discussion is permissible.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS. This section should contain only acknowledgements other than information about the financial support of the work provided on the title page.
REFERENCES. Bibliographic citations in the text should appear by author's names and year of publication. Examples are as follows: Knauer & Lehle (1994) or (Knauer & Lehle, 1994), Gow et al. (1993) or (Gow et al., 1993). In the reference list they should be organized in alphabetic order. In full-length papers and reviews the references should contain full titles of the articles referred to. In short communications the reference titles should be omitted. First and last page numbers are to be quoted.
References for journals and books should be in the following style:
Knauer R, Lehle LL. (1994) The N - oligosaccharyl- transferase complex from yeast. FEBS Lett.; 344: 83?.
Towbin H, Staechelin T, Gordon J. (1979) Electrophoretic transfer of proteins from polyacrylamide gels to nitrocellulose sheets: procedure and some applications. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A.; 76: 4350?.
Gow NAR, Swoboda R, Bertram G, Goodday GW, Brown AJP. (1993) Key genes in the regulation of dimorphism of Candida albicans. In Dimorphic Fungi in Biology and Medicine. Vanden Bossche H, Odds FC, Kerridge A. eds, pp 61?1. Plenum Press, New York, London.

Articles accepted for publication in other journals are cited in the reference list as "in press? Data in preparation or only submitted are referred to in the text ("unpublished data?) or in a footnote on the same page, not in the reference list. The same concerns personal communications. Written permission to quote personal communication from its author(s) must be provided. Extensive reference to personal communication or unpublished results should be avoided.

   Nomenclature

Nomenclature, abbreviations and units should follow the rules given in Enzyme Nomenclature (Academic Press, 1995) and the Recommendations of the International Union of Biochemistry (see: Acta Biochimica Polonica , vol. 35, No. 3, 1988 and vol. 36, No. 2, 1989).

   Nucleic Acid and Protein Sequences

New nucleotide data must be submitted and deposited in the DDBJ/EMBL/GenBank databases and an accession number obtained before the paper can be accepted for publication. Submission to any one of the three collaborating databanks is sufficient to ensure data entry in all. The accession number should be included in the manuscript on the title page. The most convenient method for submitting sequence data is by World Wide Web:

 EMBL:         http://www.ebi.ac.uk/embl/Submission/webin.html

 GenBank:   http://www.ncbi.nml.nih.gov/BankIt/

 DDBJ:          http://sakura.ddbj.nig.ac.jp/

Protein sequences, which have been determined by direct sequencing of the protein, must be submitted to SWISS-PROT at the EMBL Outstation–The European Bioinformatics Institute. Please note that they do not provide accession numbers, in advance, for protein sequences that are the result of translation of nucleic acid sequences. These translations will automatically be forwarded to them from the EMBL nucleotide database and are assigned SWISS-PROT accession numbers on incorporation into TrEMBL. Results from characterization experiments should also be submitted to SWISS-PROT at the EBI. This can include such information as function, subcellular location, subunit etc. Use following e-mail addresses for submission:

 For sequence submission:                   datasubs@ebi.ac.uk

 For characterization information:  update@ebi.ac.uk

See also the www page of EBI:          http://www.ebi.ac.uk

Each manuscript submitted to the Journal is edited under supervision of one of the Associate Editors and is reviewed by at least two referees. Qualified reviewers may be suggested by the authors, but referees are chosen on discretion of the editor who may or may not use author's suggestions. Copies of related papers, including those in press in other journals, will be helpful for reviewing. Papers returned to the authors for revision must be resubmitted within two months. If submitted later, they will be considered as new submissions.

Proof Reading

The authors should check the proofs for any errors introduced in the editing of the manuscript and return the corrected pages to the editorial office within three days. No changes other than corrections of printer's errors should be made at this stage. Corrections should be marked with a colored pen. If the authors cannot correct the proofs personally, they should authorize someone else to do so. The proofs may be sent by fax or e-mail (see above for fax number and e-mail address).

Reprints

Authors are provided with 25 reprints free of charge. Additional reprints should be requested when returning the proofs.
