About the journal

Habitat International is dedicated to the study of human settlements: their planning, design, production and management. Its main focus is on urbanisation in the developing world. However, increasingly the interrelationships and linkages between cities in the developing and developed worlds are becoming apparent. The economic, social, technological and political systems of the world are intertwined and changes in one region almost always affect other regions. Habitat International welcomes reports of research on urban issues such as policy and implementation, the links between planning, building and land, finance and management, the provision of urban services and other related problems. Papers on topics which clearly have broad implications and interrelationships based on the experiences of the developing or developed world will be considered. Submissions exploring these issues within the development context are particularly welcomed. Quality papers, short communications, comments on published papers and reports on relevant conferences from all parts of the world are presented as it is recognised that such urban problems arise everywhere. Hopefully, Habitat International will contribute to their solution.

Instructions to Authors

Authors are requested to submit their original manuscript through the Habitat International online submission and review web site. To submit your paper online, please go tohttp://ees.elsevier.com/habitatint and upload your article and its associated artwork. A PDF will be generated and the reviewing process will be carried out using that PDF. All correspondence between editor and corresponding author is performed by e-mail, and paper copies are not required at the original submission stage.

Manuscripts in general should be written in English. Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher.

Authors are responsible both for the views expressed in their articles and the accuracy of any data quoted. Where they are associated with any organisation or institution, it should be made clear whether or not the views are thus representative. In this context, attention is drawn to the editorial disclaimers on the inside over of the journal.

Presentation and Submission

Manuscripts must be double-spaced with wide margins in a font size of 12 or 10 pt. The corresponding author should be identified (include a Fax number and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers.

Paper Length Because of the heavy pressure on space, the Editor will give preference to articles which deal succinctly with an issue which both important and clearly defined. In general, articles should not exceed 6,000 words unless there is special justification.

Follow this order when preparing manuscripts: First page - Title, corresponding author's name, affiliation, E-mail address, full postal address and telephone and fax numbers, Second page - a self-contained abstract of 150 to 250 words (outlining in a single paragraph the aims, scope and conclusions of the paper); keywords (up to six); Subsequent pages - main body of text, list of references, appendices; tables; footnotes (numbered consecutively - see instructions for illustrations below). The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numerals.

Appendices If there is more than one appendix, they should be identified as A, B, etc. Formulae and equations in appendices should be given separate numbering: (Eq.A.l), (Eq.A.2), etc.: in a subsequent appendix, (Eq.B.l) and so forth.

Acknowledgements Place acknowledgements, including information on grants received, before the references, in a separate section, and not as a footnote on the title page.

Tables

When preparing tables, if you are using a table grid, use only one grid for each individual table and not a grid for each row. If no grid is used, use tabs, not spaces, to align columns.
Figures

Do not import the figures into the text file but, instead, indicate their approximate locations directly in the electronic text. See also the section on Preparation of electronic illustrations. To avoid unnecessary errors you are strongly advised to use the 'spellchecker' function of your wordprocessor.

References

Upload figure legends, tables, figures, and schemes as separate files via thewebsite. They are described in more detail below.

References should be given in the following form:

Reference to a journal publication:

1. M. Williams, Dark ages and dark areas: global deforestation in the deep past, Journal of Historical Geography 26 (2000) 51-59.

Reference to a book:

2. S. Daniels, Fields of Vision: Landscape Imagery and National Identity in England and the United States, Cambridge, 1992.

Reference to a chapter in an edited book:

3. K. Miyajima, Japanese celestial cartography before the Meiji period, in: J.B. Harley, D. Woodward (Eds), The History of Cartography, Vol. II, Chicago, 1999, 579-603.

For Notes containing more than one citation, references should be separated by a semi-colon.

Note that for more than 6 authors the first 6 should be listed followed by 'et al'.

References Responsibility for the accuracy of bibliographic citations lies entirely with the authors.

Citations in the text Please ensure that every reference cited in the text is also present in the reference list (and vice versa). Any references cited in the abstract must be given in full. Unpublished results and personal communications should not be in the reference list, but may be mentioned in the text.

Citation of a reference as 'in press' implies that the item has been accepted for publication. In the text refer to the author's name (without initials) and year of publication (e.g. ''Since Peterson (1993) has shown that'' or ''This is in the agreement with results obtained later (Kramer, 1994)'').

For three or more authors use the first author followed by ''et al.'', in the text. The list of references should be arranged alphabetically by authors' names. The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of authors' names and dates are exactly the same in the text as in the reference list.

Citing and listing of web references As a minimum, the full URL should be given. Any further information, if known (author names, dates, reference to a source publication, etc.), should also be given. Web references can be listed separately (e.g., after the reference list) under a different heading if desired, or can be included in the reference list.
General points The Habitat International online submission website accepts accept most wordprocessing formats, but Word, WordPerfect or LaTeX is preferred. Always keep a backup copy of the electronic file. Changes to the accepted version are not permissible without the explicit approval of the Editor.

Preparation of illustrations

Provide all illustrations as separate files, numbered according to their sequence in the text. Ensure that each illustration has a caption. Supply captions in a separate file, not within the figure. A caption should compromise a brief title and a description of the illustration. Make sure you use uniform lettering and sizing of your original artwork and save text in illustrations as ''graphics'' or enclose the font; use only the following fonts: Arial, Courier, Times, Symbol A detailed guide on electronic artwork is available on our website:http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork You are urged to visit this site.

Line drawings Lettering and symbols, as well as other details, should have proportionate dimensions, so as not to become illegible or unclear after possible reduction. The degree of reduction will be determined by the Publisher. Illustrations will not be enlarged. Consider the page format of the journal when designing the illustration. Do not use any type of shading.

Photographs (halftones) Original photographs must be uploaded as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white). Where necessary, insert a scale bar in the illustration (not below it), as opposed to giving a magnification factor in the legend.

Colour illustrations If, together with your accepted article, you submit usable colour figures then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in colour on the web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether or not these illustrations are reproduced in colour in the printed version. For colour reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article. Further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please seehttp://authors.elsevier.com/artwork. Please note: Because of technical complications which can arise by converting colour figures to 'grey scale' please submit in addition usable black and white prints corresponding to all the colour illustrations.

Copyright

Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to transfer copyright (for more information on copyright see http://authors.elsevier.com). This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. A letter will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript. A form facilitating transfer of copyright will be provided.

If excerpts from other copyrighted works are included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: contact Elsevier Global Rights and Permissions Department, P.O. Box 800, Oxford, OX5 1DX, UK; phone: (+44) 1865 843830, fax: (+44) 1865 853333, e-mail:permissions@elsevier.com
Proofs

When the manuscript for your accepted article is received, it is considered to be in its final form. Proofs are not to be regarded as 'drafts'.

One set of proofs will be sent to the corresponding author by PDF before publication, and corrections should be returned promptly. The publishers reserve the right to charge for any changes made at proof stage (other than typesetting errors).

Proofs will be sent to the author (first-named author if no corresponding author is identified on multi-authored papers) by PDF wherever possible and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt, preferably by email. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any other amendments may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Elsevier will do everything possible to get your article corrected and published as quickly and accurately as possible. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all of your corrections are returned to us in one all-inclusive email or fax. Subsequent additional corrections will not be possible, so please ensure that your first communication is complete.

Offprints

Twenty-five offprints will be supplied to the corresponding author free of charge. Additional offprints can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints (produced after publication of an article) will incur a 50% surcharge.

Author enquiries

Authors can also keep a track on the progress of their accepted article, and set up e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the "Track a Paper" feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway.

Full details of electronic submission and formats can be obtained fromhttp://authors.elsevier.com.

Contact details for questions arising after acceptance of an article, especially those relating to proofs, are provided when an article is accepted for publication.
