About the journal
 General Hospital Psychiatry explores the many linkages among psychiatry, medicine, and primary care. In emphasizing a biopsychosocial approach to illness and health, the journal provides a forum for professionals with clinical, academic, and research interests in psychiatry's role in the mainstream of medicine. The journal expands on traditional models of consultation-liaison, inpatient and outpatient services in the general hospital to address all aspects of ambulatory, inpatient, emergency, and community care. In response to the unpredictable nature of contemporary life, the journal explores the role of emergency psychiatry in addressing personal, social, political, and forensic responses to stress and trauma. Studies of multisystem relationships between stress, illness, psychosocial factors, inter- and intra-personal relationships, family dynamics, ecological change, and institutional forces are especially relevant to the journal's objectives.
General Hospital Psychiatry will publish original articles, case reports and brief communications on: biopsychosocial approaches to medicine; liaison-consultation psychiatry; psychosomatic medicine; emergency and crisis psychiatry; the relationship of psychiatric services to general medical systems; and new directions in medical education that stress psychiatry's role in primary care, family practice, and continuing education.
Instructions to Authors
All manuscripts must be submitted to General Hospital Psychiatry online at http://ees.elsevier.com/GHP . We regret we cannot consider manuscripts submitted outside of this online system.
All manuscripts considered suitable for the journal are strictly refereed. Articles are accepted with the understanding that they are original contributions submitted solely to General Hospital Psychiatry.
Regular articles (including clinical reports, research papers and review articles), brief communications (including relevant preliminary research reports) and letters to the editor may be submitted.
NOTE: As of January 1, 2009 the maximum length for Case Reports will be 1,000 words. The maximum length for Letters to the Editor will be 750 words. All Case Reports and Letters to the Editor submitted to GHP on or after January 1, 2009 will be considered for electronic publishing only.
Beginning January 1, 2009 all accepted papers authored by residents, fellows, medical students and other post-doctoral candidates will be featured in a new section of GHP. Please identify yourself as belonging to one of these groups when you submit your paper to us online.
Please conform to the following guidelines for each article type (word limits include the abstract and body text and do not include the references):

Editorial changes to improve clarity and conformity to journal style may be made without prior consultation with authors. Any editorial changes will be subject to author's review prior to publication.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
All new manuscripts must be submitted to General Hospital Psychiatry online at http://ees.elsevier.com/GHP. For assistance with submission support or to resolve any technical difficulties with the submission process, please contact authorsupport@elsevier.com.
Manuscripts must be double-spaced with wide margins. Pages should be numbered consecutively with an abbreviated title in the upper right hand corner of each page. The name of the author(s) must not appear anywhere in the manuscript.
Please include a SEPARATE title page with the full names of authors, academic or professional affiliations, and complete address, phone number and e-mail address of the corresponding author. Up to five key words and a running title of no more than 45 characters should be indicated on the title page.
The order of the documents submitted should be as follows:
- cover letter
- title page
- blind manuscript (including abstract, manuscript, and references in one complete document)
- tables and/or figures
Authors are requested to submit the text, tables, and artwork in electronic form. Files should be labeled with descriptive file names that do NOT include the name of the author(s).
Text, tables and graphics should be uploaded as separate files. Please note that original source files (not PDF files) are required. Complete instructions for electronic artwork submission and other author resources can be found on the authors page on Elsevier's website (www.elsevier.com/authors ).
Authors may send queries concerning the submission process, manuscript status, or journal procedures to the GHP Editorial Office (mdeg@u.washington.edu). All correspondence, including the editor's decision and request for revisions, will be made via e-mail.
FORMAT FOR ABSTRACTS: Abstracts should be written in the following format:
Objective: The abstract should begin with a clear statement of the precise objective or question addressed in the paper. If a hypothesis was tested, it should be stated.
Method: The basic design of the study and its duration should be described. The methods used should be stated and the statistical data/methods provided.
Results: The main results of the study should be given in narrative form. Any measurements or other information that may require explanation should be defined. Any important information not included in the presentation of results should be declared. Levels of statistical significance should be indicated, as well as any other factors crucial to the outcome of the study.
Conclusion(s) of the study that are directly supported by the evidence reported should be given along with the clinical application, and speculation.
FOOTNOTES to the text should be numbered consecutively with superior Arabic numerals. Footnotes to tables should be indicated by superior lowercase letters. REFERENCES should be listed numerically, corresponding to their order of appearance in the text. Citation in the text is by Arabic numeral in brackets, [1]. Use et al. only for six or more authors: et al. follows the names of the first three authors. References should be styled as follows:

Periodical abbreviations should follow those used in Index Medicus.

PDF Proofing. The corresponding author will receive proofs via e-mail in PDF format, which should be corrected and returned within 48 hours of receipt. Proofs must be carefully checked by the authors, as it is their responsibility to see that all errors are corrected and queries from editors answered. Any paid color art will be included in the PDF proof.
Reprints. Reprints may be ordered prior to publication. A reprint order form is mailed separately to the corresponding author.
Copyright. Upon acceptance of an article by the journal, the author will be sent a copyright transferal form along with acknowledgment of acceptance of manuscript. The author is asked to transfer copyright of the article to the publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information under U.S. Copyright Law.
