About the journal
The Academy of Management Review (AMR) is a theory development journal for management and organization scholars around the world. AMR publishes novel, insightful and carefully crafted conceptual articles that challenge conventional wisdom concerning all aspects of organizations and their role in society. The journal is open to a variety of perspectives, including those that seek to improve the effectiveness of, as well as those critical of management and organizations.
Although AMR seeks a variety of perspectives, each manuscript published in AMR must advance theory or the theory development process in the area of management and organizations. Authors can achieve this objective by developing new management and organization theory, significantly challenging or clarifying current theory, synthesizing recent advances and ideas into fresh (if not entirely new) theory, initiating a search for new theory by pointing out and carefully delineating a novel type of problem or crafting ways to improve the process of theory development. The management and organization theory contributions present in AMR articles often is grounded in "normal science disciplines" of economics, psychology, sociology, or social psychology, but the journal welcomes submissions that approach organization and management theory from non-traditional perspectives, such as the humanities.
Instructions to Authors
Articles
AMR articles must meet the highest standards of academic excellence, as judged by expert scholars who serve as part of the AMR Editorial Board. Therefore, the typical AMR article is comprehensive and original in analysis, accurately grounded in extant theory and literature, innovative in propositions and structure, and timely in terms of cutting-edge ideas. The journal seeks discussions that take a provocative or controversial position and/or that are distinct in terms of style of exhibition over guarded positions or generic presentations. Regardless of position or style, authors should argue research implications and, if appropriate, ramifications for management practice or public policy explicitly and persuasively.
Contributors will find AMR open to many different formats, including theoretical syntheses, new and exploratory conceptual models, point-counterpoint debates with a clear theoretical message, theoretically grounded discussions of methodology, historical essays with clear implications for current and future theory, theoretically relevant discussion of timely and important social issues, and comprehensive literature reviews with strong theoretical implications. The journal is also receptive to alternative styles of presentation. However, when the purpose is to develop new theory, research propositions may be desirable. Alternatively, when the purpose of an article is to shift the way scholars view the world or the scientific enterprise, specific propositions may not be appropriate. Authors of such articles might propose new taxonomies, trace broad developments within or across fields, espouse new philosophical or analytical perspectives, or discuss the theory development process itself.
AMR does not publish reports of empirical investigations, including empirical tests of theory, case analyses, or articles primarily about data. These are published in the Academy of Management Journal. AMR also does not publish articles primarily for practicing managers, including articles that develop new managerial tools, "best practices" pieces that instruct managers, or interviews with influential people. These are published in the Academy of Management Executive. Finally, AMR does not publish articles about the scholarship of teaching. These are published in the Academy of Management Learning and Education.
AMR Notes
AMR also publishes a category of shorter articles called AMR "Notes". Authors of AMR Notes make a substantive contribution to the advancement of management and organizational theory, yet in a limited area. That is, contributors provide the same depth of presentation as in full-length articles, but in a more narrowly focused domain.
Publication Decisions
Decisions, by the Editor or an Associate Editor, regarding publication of all submitted manuscripts reflect the recommendations of members of the Editorial Board and other qualified reviewers using a "blind" review process. Reviewers' comments are made available to authors. Manuscripts that are obviously inappropriate or insufficiently developed may be returned to the authors without formal review for submission to a more suitable journal or for resubmission to AMR following further development.
Manuscripts submitted will be judged primarily on their substantive content, but writing style, structure, and length are also considered. Poor presentation is sufficient reason for reviewers to reject a manuscript. Clarity and logical presentation are necessary; also, a provocative challenging orientation that stimulates debate is expected, assuming professionalism is maintained. Submitted manuscripts should be around 40 double-spaced pages, excluding References, Tables and Figures; excessively long manuscripts may be returned without review. Manuscripts submitted for consideration as AMR notes should be no longer than 20 double-spaced pages, excluding References, Tables and Figures.
Manuscripts are considered with the understanding that their contents have not been published and are not under consideration elsewhere. Presentation of a paper at a professional meeting does not disqualify it from consideration. In fact, authors are expected to get and use feedback from colleagues prior to submitting a manuscript for formal review.
Any article, note or dialogue submission to AMR should be prepared according to the AMR Style Guide for Authors, and submitted as a single Microsoft Word file. This file must contain all components (excluding the title page) of the manuscript including abstract and all end materials such as references, figures and tables. The submission must be typed using a 12-pitch or larger font, with margins of at least one-inch.
To submit a manuscript, first make sure you have a Word file from which the title page and all author-identifying references have been removed. Then, go to the site at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/amr/ and follow the directions.
Book Reviews
AMR also publishes reviews of scholarly academic books. Books reviewed in AMR represent conceptual advancements, cutting-edge empirical research, critiques of field, and works that establish links between management and other academic disciplines. Book reviews are commissioned by the Book Review Editor. Unsolicited reviews are not likely to be published. Solicited book reviews should be submitted through the Web-based submission system: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/amr.
