About the journal

Weather, Climate, and Society, a quarterly journal of the American Meteorological Society, publishes scientific research and analysis on the interactions of weather and climate with society. The journal encompasses economic, policy, institutional, social, behavioral, and international research, including mitigation and adaptation to weather and climate change. Articles may focus on a broad range of topics at the interface of weather and/or climate and society, including the socioeconomic, policy, or technological influences on weather and climate, the socioeconomic or cultural impacts of weather and climate, ethics and equity issues associated with weather, climate, and society, and the historical and cultural contexts of weather, climate, and society. Because of the interdisciplinary subject matter, articles that involve both natural/physical scientists and social scientists are particularly encouraged.

Instructions to Authors

Weather, Climate, and Society (WCAS) publishes scientific research and analysis on the interactions of weather and climate with society. Because of the interdisciplinary subject matter, articles that involve both natural /physical scientists and social scientists are particularly encouraged.

  • Articles - Full-length, up to 7500 words or 26 double-spaced pages of text (not including abstract, references, figure and table lists, and figures).
  • Expedited Contributions - Shorter articles with an expedited peer-review and publication cycle, limited to 2,500 words (approximately 9 double-spaced text pages), not including abstract, references, figure and table lists, and figures, and no more than a combined total of 6 figures and tables. Multi part papers are not allowed. For Expedited Contributions the Editor will expedite the review process and the AMS publication department will accelerate manuscript preparation for publication in final form. Authors will have a deadline of 4 weeks to complete revisions. Expedited Contributions should be published 10 to 12 weeks after final acceptance. If the manuscript grows beyond the maximum length or figure criteria specified above during the review and revision, the Editor will decide if the paper remains an Expedited Contribution or becomes a regular article. If, however, the paper requires a second round of reviews the contribution will move out of the expedited contributions category and will be considered as a regular article.
  • Comment and Reply Exchanges - Comments are written in response to a published article. The author of the article being commented upon always has the opportunity to write a reply. These exchanges are published together. Generally, comments should be submitted within two (2) years of the publication date of the original paper, although the Editor can waive this time limit based on extenuating circumstances.

  • Policy Fora – Policy fora synthesize or integrate policy debates with scientific research.  Length can be up to 1500 words.
  • Reviews – Reviews of books, workshops, and gray literature are solicited by the editors.  The editors also welcome proposals for reviews.
  • Discussion – Comments from readers, not to exceed 500 words, may be written in response to a published article, note, or forum.  The author of the article being commented upon always has the opportunity to write a reply.  These exchanges are published together.

Title Page:

The manuscript title, name and affiliation of each author, any current or additional affiliations, and corresponding author address and e-mail need to appear on the first page in the manuscript file.

Abstract:

A concise (≤250 words) abstract is required at the beginning of each article and, at the discretion of the chief editors, at the beginning of appropriate shorter contributions. Authors should summarize their conclusions and methods in the abstract. First person construction is not permitted. Please note the abstract text in the manuscript must exactly match the abstract text entered in the abstract field of the upload system.

Capsule:  (for BAMS only)

Include in the text of the manuscript (before or after the abstract) a short (20-30 words maximum) Capsule Summary of your Article (no capsule is required for Nowcast, InBox, or Meeting Summary manuscripts.) The Capsule Summary will be placed underneath the title and authors of your article. The more detailed Abstract will be placed on a separate page in the front of the magazine.

Body Text:

The text should be divided into sections, each with a separate heading and numbered consecutively. The section/subsection headings should be typed on a separate line [e.g., 1. Introduction, a. Data, 1) RADIOSONDE, and (i) Experiment 1].  (Sections in BAMS need not be numbered)

Acknowledgments:

The AMS expects that topically relevant funding sources and conflicts of interest are fully disclosed in the Acknowledgments of all submissions. Please omit the word “number” from grant or contract acknowledgments.

Appendix:

Auxiliary analyses or tables whose details are subordinate to the main theme of the paper should normally appear in an appendix. Please note that any tables or figures intended to appear in an appendix should not be embedded and must be located after the references with the other manuscript tables and figures. Each appendix must have a title. Example:

APPENDIX A
Use of Model Data

References and Citations:

References should be arranged alphabetically without numbering. Details regarding formatting of references can be accessed here. The in-text citation should consist of the author's name and year of publication, [e.g., “according to Rossby (1945),” or “as shown by an earlier study (Rossby 1945)”]. When there are two or more papers by the same author in the same year, the distinguishing suffix (a,b, etc.) should be added.

Tables:

The tables cannot be embedded in the body of the manuscript. They should appear after the references and before the figures. Each table must be cited specifically in the text and in numerical order. All tables should have a double-spaced caption. Authors should use font styles such as bold and italic to highlight information within the table. Tables cannot contain shading or underlining; footnotes can be used to convey additional information.

Figure captions:

Each figure must have an adequate caption, and the full caption text must appear beneath the figure in the built PDF. In addition, a list of figure captions must be included in the manuscript at the revision stage. The list should appear after the references and before the figures are displayed individually.

Figures:

The figures cannot be embedded in the body of the manuscript. The figures should display once at the end of the built PDF with the full caption text.

Please note all figure source files for production are required at the revision stage. The print-quality original figure files must be uploaded in one of the accepted formats for
Journals or BAMS. Individual figure files should contain only a single figure, and multiple-panel figures that will appear on a single page should be combined into a single file whenever possible. Color figures should be generated in RGB mode. Authors should submit one complete figure per file. Note that BAMS encourages the use of color by authors and does not levy additional charges for color figures.Technical editors may resize the figures for layout purposes. Additional digital art guidelines can also be accessed online. Note: it is the policy of the AMS Publications Commission that the final published print and online versions of manuscripts must be identical including in the use of color.

For additional information regarding which item type to select when uploading your figure source files, please refer to the list of item types.

Supplemental Material:

Supplemental material is material that authors wish to be considered by the editor for online-only publication; it should not be essential to the article itself, which should stand alone. This may include animations or other inherently digital material. Supplemental material should be uploaded as a separate file (and designated with the item type “Supplemental Material”).
