About the journal

VOLUNTAS: International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations

The official journal of the International Society for Third-Sector Research (ISTR), Voluntas is an interdisciplinary journal that provides a central forum for worldwide research in the area between the state, market, and household sectors. The journal combines full-length articles with shorter research notes (reflecting the latest developments in the field) and book reviews.
Voluntas is essential reading for all those engaged in research on the Third Sector (voluntary and nonprofit organizations) including economists, lawyers, political scientists, psychologists, sociologists, and social and public policy analysts. It presents leading-edge academic argument around civil society issues in a style that is accessible to practitioners and policymakers.

Articles are published in English with abstracts in French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, and Arabic.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscript Submission

Manuscripts are to be submitted online via Voluntas’ Editorial Manager Website at http://volu.edmgr.com
Please visit this site for more details on how to register with Editorial Manager and how to upload and electronically submit your manuscript.

Manuscripts may be submitted in English, French, German, or Spanish, but (if accepted) are published in English. If closely related material has been published elsewhere or is under consideration elsewhere, this should be stated clearly in a covering letter enclosed with the manuscript, including a clear statement as to the relationship between the various pieces of work.
Springer is pleased to offer VOLUNTAS: International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations authors the opportunity to have their submissions reviewed by an independent language editing service prior to submission. The following four contractors have been selected specifically for their English as a second language (ESL) capabilities and their years of experience with scientific manuscripts. Interested authors should contact any of the following contractors for manuscript assistance; authors are directly responsible for all payments to these contractors:

Publication Policies

Submission is a representation that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. A statement transferring copyright from the authors (or their employers, if they hold the copyright) to the International Society for Third−Sector Research and The Johns Hopkins University will be required before the manuscript can be accepted for publication. The Editor will supply the necessary forms for this transfer. Such a written transfer of copyright, which previously was assumed to be implicit in the act of submitting a manuscript, is necessary under the U.S. Copyright Law in order for the publisher to carry through the dissemination of research results and reviews as widely and effectively as possible.

Manuscript Preparation

Book Review Preparation

Please refer to the Book Review Preparation guidelines, posted separately on the righthand column of the journal website (www.springer.com/11266).
Manuscripts must be uploaded to Editorial Manager as a Microsoft Word document. Do not use the graphics option for tables or the sequential (embedded) footnote option. Manuscripts must be double-spaced (including abstracts, footnotes, block quotations, references, tables and appendixes), with one-inch margins. The manuscript pages should be numbered consecutively starting with the first page of the text (not abstract).

Manuscript Contents

Manuscript submissions should be composed into (a minimum of) two files. The first file should contain the title page along with all of the authors’ affiliations, suggested running head and acknowledgements; the second file should contain the abstract, main body text, references, notes, and appendices, when applicable. If at all possible, all tables should be uploaded together as one file. Likewise, all figures should be uploaded together as one file. Each manuscript must include the following:
Papers should be a maximum of 10,000 words in length, with all copy typed double-space.
Abstract
  • An abstract is to be provided, preferably no longer than 100–150 words.
Notes
  • These should be grouped together in a separate, double-spaced section after the text and before the References. In the text, notes should appear as superscript, lower-case letters. For example: This has caused a number of significant controversies a. . .
Key Words
  • A list of 4–5 key words is to be provided directly below the abstract. Key words should express the precise content of the manuscript, as they are used for indexing purposes.
References should include (in this order):
  • last names and initials of all authors
  • year published
  • title of article
  • name of publication
  • volume number
  • and inclusive pages
The style and punctuation of the references should conform to that used in the journal – illustrated by the following examples:
  • Journal Article
Crow, S. M., Fok, L. Y., and Hartman, S. J. (1998). Who is at greatest risk of work−related discrimination – women, blacks, or homosexuals?. Employee Responsibilities and Rights Journal, 11, 15−−26.
  • Book
Blau, J. R. (1993). Social Contracts and Economic Markets, Plenum Press, New York.
  • Contribution to a Book
Segal, S. P., and Holschuh, J. (1995). Reciprocity in support networks of sheltered−care residents. In R. K. Price, B. M. Shea, and H. N. Mookherjee (eds.), Social Psychiatry across Cultures: Studies from North America, Asia, Europe, and Africa, Plenum Press, New York.
Footnotes
  • Footnotes should be avoided. When their use is absolutely necessary, footnotes should be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals and should be typed at the bottom of the page to which they refer. Place a line above the footnote, so that it is set off from the text. Use the appropriate superscript numeral for citation in the text.

Illustration Style

Illustrations
  • Illustrations (photographs, drawings, diagrams, and charts) are to be numbered in one consecutive series of Arabic numerals.
  • The captions for illustrations should be typed on a separate sheet of paper.
  • Photographs should be large, glossy prints, showing high contrast.
  • Drawings should be high−quality laser prints or should be prepared with india ink.
  • Either the original drawings or good−quality photographic prints are acceptable.
  • Artwork for each figure should be provided on a separate sheet of paper.
  • Identify figures on the back with author's name and number of the illustration.
  • Electronic artwork submitted on disk should be in the TIFF or EPS format (1200 dpi for line and 300 dpi for half−tones and gray−scale art).
  • Color art should be in the CYMK color space.
  • Artwork should be on a separate disk from the text, and hard copy must accompany the disk.
Tables
  • Tables should be numbered (with Roman numerals) and referred to by number in the text.
  • Each table should be typed on a separate sheet of paper.
  • Center the title above the table, and type explanatory
footnotes (indicated by superscript lowercase letters) below the table.

Does Springer provide English language support?

Manuscripts that are accepted for publication will be checked by our copyeditors for spelling and formal style. This may not be sufficient if English is not your native language and substantial editing would be required. In that case, you may want to have your manuscript edited by a native speaker prior to submission. A clear and concise language will help editors and reviewers concentrate on the scientific content of your paper and thus smooth the peer review process.
The following editing service provides language editing for scientific articles in all areas Springer publishes in.
Use of an editing service is neither a requirement nor a guarantee of acceptance for publication.
Please contact the editing service directly to make arrangements for editing and payment.
