About the journal

Aims and Scope

Occupational Therapy International is a peer-reviewed journal, publishing manuscripts that reflect the practice of occupational therapy throughout the world. Research studies or original concept papers are considered for publication. Priority for publication will be given to research studies that provide recommendations for evidence-based practice and demonstrate the effectiveness of a specific treatment method. Single subject case studies evaluating treatment effectiveness are also encouraged. Other topics that are appropriate for the journal include reliability and validity of clinical instruments, assistive technology, community rehabilitation, cultural comparisons, health promotion and wellness, surveys of treatment practices, historical reviews and meta-analyses that demonstrate treatment efficacy.

Instructions to Authors

Occupational Therapy International has now adopted online manuscript submission and peer review. The new system brings with it a whole host of benefits including:

• Quick and easy submission

• Administration centralised and reduced

• Significant decrease in peer review times

All submissions to the journal must be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/oti. Full instructions and support are available on the site and a user ID and password can be obtained on the first visit. If you require assistance then click the Get Help Now link which appears at the top right of every ScholarOne Manuscripts page. If you cannot submit online, please contact Frank Stein by telephone (1 608-274-1242) or by e-mail (Franklin.Stein@usd.edu).

Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published and should not be submitted for publication elsewhere while they are under consideration by Wiley. Submitted material will not be returned to the author unless specifically requested.

Manuscript style. The language of the journal is English. The manuscript should be prepared in accordance with the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th edn). All submissions must have a title, numbered pages, be double-line spaced and have a margin of 3cm all around. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, and not incorporated into the text. The title page must list the full title, short title and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including e-mail, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.  Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).  The article will be sent for peer review without the above identifying details.  Papers should not exceed 5000 words or contain more than 10 tables/figures.  For papers, supply a structured abstract of up to 200 words, with the following sub-headings: Title, Keywords, Background, Objectives of Study, Methods, Findings, Relevance to Clinical Practice, Limitations and Recommendations for Further Research.

Text arrangement. The text should be divided into sections with headings. The sections should include the following: an introduction describing the problem investigated, incidence/prevalence of the problem, rationale for undertaking the study and a literature review; a methods section describing procedures and research methodology; a results section to indicate objective findings; and a summary or conclusions section. For qualitative studies, literature surveys, theoretical papers, descriptions of occupational therapy programmes and historical reviews, there will be variations in organization.

Case Reports. The Journal does not accept case reports for publication. Authors of case reports are encouraged to submit to the Wiley Open Access journal Clinical Case Reports www.clinicalcasesjournal.com which aims to directly improve health outcomes by identifying and disseminating examples of best clinical practice.

Reference style. References should be arranged alphabetically. Where reference is made to more than one work by the same author, published in the same year, identify each citation in the text as follows: (Collins, 1998a), (Collins, 1998b). Where multiple authors are listed in the reference, please cite in the text as ‘Maxwell et al. (1999)’. All references must be complete and accurate. Where possible the DOI for the reference should be included at the end of the reference. Online citations should include date of access. References should be listed in the following style:

ETHICAL GUIDELINES

Occupational Therapy International adheres to the below ethical guidelines for publication and research.

Authorship: Authors submitting a paper do so on the understanding that the manuscript has been read and approved by all authors and that all authors agree to the submission of the manuscript to the Journal. ALL named authors must have made an active contribution to the conception and design and/or analysis and interpretation of the data and/or the drafting of the paper and informational authors should state their contribution on the title page on submission.

Occupational Therapy International adheres to the definition of authorship set up by The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) http://www.ICMJE.org/ethical_1author.html. According to the ICMJE authorship criteria should be based on 1) substantial contributions to conception and design of, or acquisition of data or analysis and interpretation of data, 2) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content and 3) final approval of the version to be published. Authors should meet conditions 1, 2 and 3.

Ethical Approvals: Where a submission reports on the collection of research data involving human subjects, it must be accompanied by an explicit statement in the Materials and Methods section identifying how informed consent was obtained and a declaration that, where appropriate, the study has been approved by the appropriate Research Ethics Committee (UK) or Human Subjects Review board (US and elsewhere). Editors reserve the right to reject papers if there is doubt as to whether appropriate procedures have been used.

Conflict of Interest: Authors are required to disclose any possible conflict of interest when submitting a paper. These can include financial conflicts of interest e.g. patent ownership, stock ownership, employment by dialysis/pharmaceutical companies, consultancies or speaker's fees from pharmaceutical companies related to the research/topic area. Authors should note that referees are asked to advise the Editor of any conflict of interest capable of influencing the author's judgment.

All conflicts of interest (or information specifying the absence of conflict of interest) should be included on the title page under ‘Conflicts of Interest’. This information will be included in the published article. If the author does not have any conflict of interest the following statement should be included: “No conflict of interest has been declared by the author(s).”

Source of Funding: Authors are required to specify the source of funding for their research when submitting a paper. Suppliers of materials should be named and their location (town, state/county, country) included. The information will be disclosed in the Acknowledgements section of the published article.

Further information. Proofs will be sent to the author for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. Free access to the final PDF offprint of your article will be available via Author Services only. Please therefore sign up for Author Services if you would like to access your article PDF offprint and enjoy the many benefits the service offers. Additional copies of the journal may be ordered.

Note to NIH Grantees. Pursuant to NIH mandate, Wiley Blackwell will post the accepted version of contributions authored by NIH grant-holders to PubMed Central upon acceptance. This accepted version will be made publicly available 12 months after publication. For further information, see www.wiley.com/go/nihmandate.
