About the journal
Basic information

MAGALLANIA (Antigua Serie Ciencias Humanas de Anales del Instituto de la Patagonia) the formerly called Social Science series of the Anales del Instituto de la Patagonia, Universidad de Magallanes, has regularly published one volume yearly since 1970 and a volume with two numbers since 2005. Its main purpose is to publish original and unpublished work in the Social Sciences and Humanities and on topics referred to Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, Antarctic and adjoining islands, and the South-eastern Pacific.
Each year one volume of the journal, divided in two numbers, is published. The first number is published in May and the second in October of each year. |

Scope and policy

MAGALLANIA (ANTIGUA SERIE CIENCIAS HUMANAS DE ANALES DEL INSTITUTO DE LA PATAGONIA) is a magazine of the UNIVERSITY OF MAGALLANES, Institute of the Patagonia, destined to publish original contributions to subjects related to the diverse disciplines that conform social sciences and humanities, in the geographic scope of Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, Antarctic and adjoining islands, and the South-eastern Pacific.
Authors may send contributions to the journal voluntarily or by request of the Editorial Board. Both national and international contributions will be accepted throughout the year for review as long as they adhere to the following journal norms for manuscript preparation and submission.
The reception will be continuous along the year.
Contributions must be uploaded on website www.institutodelapatagonia.cl. Each author or coauthor must go to the web platform, select the journal, create a user account and follow the online instructions.
Furthermore, between years 2013 and 2015, contributions sent by mail will be accepted at Avda. Bulnes 01890, Casilla 113-D, Punta Arenas, Chile. Also by e-mail:magallania@umag.cl, revista.magallania@gmail.com and flavia.morello@umag.cl.
An annual volume is published, with two numbers. Number 1 will be published in May, and number 2 in October of every year. Contributions will be sent to a peer review committee for its critical reading. This committee is constituted by pairs and researchers of high reputation, nationals and foreigners. Each contribution will be sent to two members of the committee advice, people who will be selected according to the specific thematic of the work and excluding any author or coauthor of the same work. The evaluations will be communicated to the authors, and being based on these opinions and the critical reading of the publishing commission, will indicate the acceptance, acceptance with modifications to publish or rejection of the contributions.
Authors and co-authors accepted and published papers shall be entitled to receive a PDF file with their article. To obtain the printed journal they should pay the fee, considering the number of copies requested and transport out of Punta Arenas, Chile, if applicable. We inform that from year 2013 onwards, the journal does not have reprints or sections. |

Form and preparation of manuscripts
|
|
1. |
The text should be written in Spanish, and include a summary in Spanish, an abstract in English and the English title. In addition, contributions should add a list of three to five palabras claves - keywords, in Spanish and English. |

|
2. |
Contributions should be submitted in one of the following formatting styles. The maximum length of each contribution includes all the content of the work (text, tables, pictures, figures, maps, and bibliography, among others). The journal, however, reserves the right to modify this requirement. |
| |
|
|
2.1. |
ARTICLES: original reports of the results and conclusions of research in an advanced stage. Maximum length: 30 pages. |

|
|
2.2. |
BRIEF REPORTS: short reports of new data or research in progress. Maximum length: 12 pages. |
| |
|
|
2.3. |
NOTES: brief communication related to a specific topic or data. Maximum length: 6 pages. |
| |
|
|
2.4. |
UNPUBLISHED DOCUMENTS: publications of unpublished documents about Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. Maximum length 30 pages. |
| |
|
|
2.5. |
NOTES AND BIBLIOGRAPHIC COMMENTARIES: presentation and commentaries of articles and books recently published of interest to the journal. Commentaries require the signature of the author at the end of the contribution. Maximum 2 pages. |

|
|
3. |
Text and images should be in black-and-white. There will be a charge of US $100 per page for any images that the authors feel must be published in color. |

|
|
4. |
Contributions submitted by post service shall include 1 printed copy and 1 electronic version (DVD or compact disk). |

|
5. |
Formatting: |
| |
|
|
5.1. |
Each author of the manuscript must be listed with one last name and one first name, and the initials of the middle name or second last name. Each author should indicate with an asterisk-footnote their academic institution, mailing address, and email. The title of the manuscript should be centered and in capital letters, and each subheading should be in capital letters and left-side adjusted. |

FORMS OF TITLE, CAPTIONS:
- Title of the paper: Spanish-English capital letters and centered;
- Authors: capital letters, name and surname, right-aligned;
- Summary-Abstract-palabras claves-keywords: capital letters and centered.
- TEXT ARTICLE:
- Subtitle 1 capital letters and left justified, Times New Roman 10 (eg INTRODUCTION, RESULTS. BIBLIOGRAPHY, etc.).
- Subtitle 2 in high-low and italics, left justified, Times New Roman 10 (eg, Current Vegetation, Archaeological Context, etc.).
- Subtitle 3 in high-low and normal, Arial left, Arial 10 (eg, Site 1, Site 2, etc.).
- Subtitle 4 in high-low and normal left aligned, Times New Roman 10 (eg, Layer I, Layer II, etc.).

BIBLIOGRAPHY AND REFERENCES
Papers must follow APA 6th Edition international editorial rules (American Psychological Association).
TEXT REFERENCES should use one of the following forms, thought as adequate for the necessities of humanistic and Social Science disciplines, respectively.
A) Footnotes with the complete reference, indicating the author, year of publication, and followed by op cit. (in italics) when new references are made to the same document. When the citation specifies page numbers, the authors should use p. for a single page and pp. for various pages. For instance: Martinic 1982, op. cit. pp. 23-25.
B) In text quote, in parenthesis author and year: number of pages (e.g. Martinic 1983, Massone 1987: 234). Additional citations by the same author should be separated with a comma between each year. A semicolon should separate additional citations of references by different authors. If several works by the same author and year are being quoted, then lowercase letters should be used to distinguish each paper. The citation should only include the author’s first last name. When citing work by two authors use "&" between both last names. When citing work with three or more authors, cite only the first author’s last name followed by et al. (in italics). Also, references like lbid. and com pers. (in parenthesis) should be used.
BIBLIOGRAPHY will also have two modalities related to citation forms.
A) Sources, separated between unpublished documents, manuscripts and published materials, among others.
B) Bibliography.
In both cases the sources and bibliography must contain the complete references in alphabetical order of all authors and co-authors and all information following APA 6th EDITION NORM. |

5.5. |
Quotes, text transcriptions, words in foreign language, neologisms, words not accepted by the Real Academia de la Lengua Española, and scientific names must be written in italics, without quotation marks. |

5.6. |
Figures and tables must be numbered in order of appearance with Arabic numbers, and all figure and table captions must be included in a separate page. Figures include maps, photographs, graphs, and illustrations in general. They must be referred in the text with the abbreviation Fig. |

|
|
5.7. |
Abbreviations of metric measurements, as well as others should not include an end-point (e.g., AP, aC, cm, mm, kg, msnm, gr). Chronological dating must include ?13, the standard error of the estimation and the laboratory acronyms. |
| |
|
|
5.8. |
Calendar years must not include a period (e.g., 1999, 2012, etc) and radiocarbon chronologies must have a period in the thousand (e.g., 10.500 years BP, 1.500 AC). |

|
|
5.9. |
Geographical terms must be written in lowercase. For instance: estrecho de Magallanes, lago Deseado, Puerto Percy, océano Pacífico, etc. |

|

Technical specifications: |

Letter size paper, printed on only one side, all margins at 2,5 cm, 10 point font-size, Times-New Roman, and 1.5 line spacing. |

Figures and maps must be sent in paper copy for press-quality, and in high-quality electronic version. The quality of each figure should be suitable for its reproduction at a width of 7 cm (one column) or 15 cm (two columns) and at a maximum height of 22 cm. Images must have a minimal resolution of 300 dpi, and submitted as TIFF or JPG. |

Text files should be submitted as MS Word or RTF. |

6.4. |
Text, figures, graphs and tables must be saved in separated electronic files. A reference in the main text should be included at each place where each figure and table should be placed. |

6.5. |
Pre-prints corrections will be done following the INDITECNOR 2.3-3 norms (signs for the correction of pre-prints). |
| |
|
|
7. |
Two pre-prints will be made, the first one will be sent to the main author for further corrections, and only the editorial board will review the second one. The correction will be made in paper or by email, and no new version of the text will be accepted after this process has begun. | |
