About the journal

Democratization aims to promote a better understanding of democratization – defined as the way democratic norms, institutions and practices evolve and are disseminated both within and across national and cultural boundaries. While the focus is on democratization viewed as a process, the journal also builds on the enduring interest in democracy itself and its analysis. The emphasis is contemporary and the approach comparative, with the publication of scholarly contributions about those areas where democratization is currently attracting considerable attention world-wide. There is special reference to democratization in the developing world and in post-communist societies, but not to the exclusion of other relevant areas such as North America, Australasia, and the European Union and its member states.
The journal aims to encourage debate on the many aspects of democratization that are of interest to policy-makers, administrators and journalists, aid and development personnel, as well as to all those involved in education.
Peer Review All research articles in this journal have undergone rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and anonymized refereeing by anonymous referees.
Articles appearing in this journal are abstracted and indexed in Thomson Reuters including Social Sciences Citation Index and Web of Science; EBSCOhost including Political Science Complete, International Political Science Abstracts Database, Historical Abstracts, and Public Affairs Index; Scopus, Sociological Abstracts, CSA Worldwide Political Science Abstracts and International Bibliography of the Social Sciences, among others.
Instructions to Authors This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.
Articles submitted to Democratization should be original contributions and should not be under consideration for any other publication at the same time. If an article is under consideration by another publication, or has been, or will be published elsewhere, authors should clearly indicate this at the time of submission.
All submissions should be made online at the Democratization ScholarOne site ( http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/fdem ). New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged on to the site, submissions should be made via the Author Centre. All contributions (other than book reviews) are peer reviewed.
Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from the file to allow them to be sent anonymously to reviewers. When uploading files authors will then be able to title the non-anonymous version as ‘File not for review’.
All the authors of a paper should include their full names, affiliations, postal addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses on the cover page of the manuscript. One author should be identified as the corresponding author. The affiliations of all named co-authors should be the affiliation where the research was conducted. If any of the named co-authors moves affiliation during the peer review process, the new affiliation can be given as a footnote. Please note that no changes to affiliation can be made after the article is accepted. Please note that the email address of the corresponding author will normally be displayed in the article PDF (depending on the journal style) and the online article.
Authors are asked to submit their articles presented according to the following directions, as editors will not undertake retyping of manuscripts prior to publication.
Articles should be double-spaced and with ample margins. All pages (including those containing only diagrams and tables) should be numbered consecutively. Please avoid breaking words at the end of lines.
The upper limit for articles is 9000 words, including notes and references. Authors should inform the editors of the exact length of the article at the time of submission.
An abstract of up to 200 words should be added during the submission process, along with a minimum of five and a maximum of 10 keywords.
As no corrections, updating or additions are allowed at proof stage, authors must make a final check of their article for content, style, proper names, quotations and references. Check especially consistency of: capitalization, use of italics, hyphenation and spelling (particularly of foreign names and words). Check for missing or duplicated numbers indicating notes, and ensure full bibliographical details are given in all references.
All diagrams, charts and graphs should be referred to as figures and consecutively numbered. Tables should be kept to a minimum and contain only essential data. Each figure and table must be given an Arabic numeral, followed by a heading, and be referred to in the text. Sources should be given in full for tables, maps and figures. As artwork cannot be corrected at proof stage, please double check for accuracy, especially spelling and totals (in tables).
Journal style Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts conform to the journal style.
Please use British spelling as in the Oxford Dictionary (e.g. colour, organize) and punctuation. Use double quotation marks with single within if needed. This journal requires a short paragraph of biographical details for all contributors.
If you have any questions about references or formatting your article, please contact authorqueries@tandf.co.uk (please mention the journal title in your email).
Word templates
Book reviews should be preceded by full publication information, in the following form:
Communism and development by Robert Bideleux, London, Methuen, 1985, x + 315 pp., index, bibliography, statistical appendix, £20 (hardback), ISBN 0-416-73410-3, £10 (paperback), ISBN0-416-73456-4
The reviewer's name, affiliation and email address (the last two in italics) should appear, on separate lines, at the end of the review, ranged at the right.
Thank you for submitting your manuscript to Democratization .
