About the journal

Cambridge Journal of Education

Cambridge Journal of Education , an international English language journal, publishes original refereed articles on all aspects of education with a particular emphasis on work that contributes to shared understanding among academic researchers, theorists, practising teachers, policy-makers and educational administrators. Its readers include members of each of these groups - evidence of its success in bringing together those who determine the content, organisation, and practice of education.

Cambridge Journal of Education enjoys a wide international readership and encourages contributors from different educational systems and cultures to submit work for publication. The Editors also welcome suggestions for special issues on particular topics; pieces which engage in or stimulate discussion; and responses to issues raised by contributors. Articles should normally be of 6000 words maximum length, though much shorter pieces are also welcome. Cambridge Journal of Education is published on behalf of the University of Cambridge Faculty of Education. Views expressed by contributors are not necessarily those of the publishers, the Editors or the Editorial Panel.

Peer Review Policy:
All articles in this journal have undergone rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and anonymized refereeing by at least two anonymous referees.

Instructions to Authors
This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.

The Editors welcome contributions in the form of original articles, letters, or replies to articles. The Journal may in addition, at the discretion of the Editors, publish notices of courses, conferences and similar events.

Contributors should bear in mind that they are addressing an international audience, and papers are only accepted for review on the basis that they are not being submitted elsewhere for publication.

No payment is made for contributions, papers accepted become the copyright of the Journal.

This journal is compliant with the Research Councils UK OA policy. Please see the licence options and embargo periods here .

Manuscripts
Articles should be of 6,000-8,000 words in length inclusive of references , though much shorter pieces are also welcome.

All submissions should be made online at Cambridge Journal of Education 's Manuscript Central site . New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as "File not for review".

Articles should be double spaced, with ample margins, and bear the title of the contribution, name(s) of the author(s) and the address where the work was carried out. Each article should be prefaced by an abstract of up to 150 words, and keywords. The full postal address and email address of the author who will check proofs and receive correspondence and offprints should also be included. All pages should be numbered.

Footnotes to the text should be avoided wherever this is reasonably possible.

Manuscript Processing

Care and attention to these guidelines are essential as importing graphics packages can often be problematic.

Figures.

We welcome figures sent electronically, but care and attention to these guidelines are essential as importing graphics packages can often be problematic.

  • Figures must be saved individually and separate to text. Please do not embed figures in the article file.
  • Avoid the use of colour and tints for purely aesthetic reasons.
  • Figures should be produced as near to the finished size as possible.
  • All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. Figure 1, Figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. Figure 1(a), Figure 1(b)).
  • Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the article, and numbered correspondingly.
  • The filename for the graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Figure1, Figure2a.
  • Files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript), and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application (e.g. CorelDraw/Mac, CorelDraw/PC).
Please note that it is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please do not hesitate to contact our Production Department if you have any queries.

Reproduction of copyright material
As an author, you are required to secure permission to reproduce any proprietary text, illustration, table, or other material, including data, audio, video, film stills, and screenshots, and any supplementary material you propose to submit. This applies to direct reproduction as well as “derivative reproduction” (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). The reproduction of short extracts of text, excluding poetry and song lyrics, for the purposes of criticism may be possible without formal permission on the basis that the quotation is reproduced accurately and full attribution is given. For further information and FAQs, please see http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/permission.asp
Copies of permission letters should be sent with the manuscript upon submission to the editors.  Copyright permission letter template

Tables and captions to illustrations. Tables must be typed out on separate pages and not be included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also typed out on a separate page. Tables and figures should be numbered with Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to symbols.
