Instructions to Authors
SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS The Canadian Geographer/Le G¨¦ographe Canadien publishes original, scholarly works in all fields of Geography. The submission of a manuscript is an implicit declaration that the work has not been published, in whole or in part, and is not being considered elsewhere. The Editorial Board considers a paper ineligible for publication if most of its content is: (i) under consideration for publication or is published in a journal, or book chapter; (ii) under consideration for publication or is published in a conference proceeding or a government publication, with a substantial circulation (distributed to 100 or more individuals over a wide area). Exceptions are possible if the author retains copyright and submitted manuscripts are substantially revised. For similar reasons, exceptions can be made for material published on the World Wide Web (Internet). Authors should contact the editor to discuss such manuscripts prior to submission. Types of Submissions Research articles: For editorial purposes, submissions are classified as Human Geography, Physical Geography or Geographic Information Science and are published in English or French. Research articles must report original and previously unpublished research or a development of a theory or technique that significantly extends knowledge within Geography. Research articles must be accompanied by abstracts initially in either English or French. Accepted articles require abstracts in English and French. The length of Research Articles may vary from 5,000 to 15,000 words of text, including all text, tables, and illustrations. Special issues of Research Articles that focus on a selected theme may be published occasionally. The advice of the editor must be sought before undertaking a special issue. Other types of submission are invited, notably: Focus Essays are original studies that are shorter than conventional research articles or are research articles that report on themes of interest to the Geography research community but do not fit the conventions of research articles. The length of (shorter) Focus Essays should be limited to 5,000 words, including all text, tables, and illustrations. Focus essays may also involve several short articles that are guest edited. Those persons interested in organizing a submission are requested to describe their plans with the editor. Review essays are intended to provide an organized critical synthesis of information on an important topic. Readers are invited to submit manuscripts that interpret and evaluate the underlying themes from a current body of related literature or that review critically one or a number of major works in ways that go beyond the normal book review. Review essays should be no more than 4,000 words, including all text, tables, and illustrations. The advice of the editor should be sought before a reader undertakes a review essay. Book reviews are commissioned by the review editor to review individual books of importance to Canadian readership. Readers willing to undertake reviews are invited to send to the review editor a statement of the subject area(s) of interest to them. Unsolicited reviews may be accepted for publication, subject to external assessment. Canadian Landform Examples present succinct explanatory descriptions for teaching use or for raising research questions in geomorphology. Physical Landform Examples should be limited to 3,000 words, including all text, tables, and illustrations. The advice of the Physical Geography editor should be sought before a reader prepares a submission. Canadian Human Landscapes offers interpretive perspectives on Canadian Human Landscapes and papers should be limited to 3,000 words, including all text, tables, and illustrations. The advice of the Canadian Human Landscapes editor should be sought before a reader prepares a submission. Commentaries present a response to published articles or an editorial or scholarly opinion. Commentary articles are generally shorter essays, but longer manuscripts may be published discussion with the editor. Commentaries should be limited to 1,000 words or less. Commentaries are published at the discretion of the editor and they are peer reviewed by the editor and two editorial board members. Obituaries published in The Canadian Geographer conform to policies established by the CAG executive. For further information on obituaries, contact the editor. GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS Contributors of all kinds of submissions should submit their manuscripts electronically to tcg.editor@cag-acg.ca. Contributors will receive an email confirming the receipt of their manuscript that will include the manuscript tracking number. If the contributor does not receive a confirmation email, the contributor should follow-up with the Editor to make sure that their manuscript was successfully received. Manuscripts should be transmitted using a common word processing program, preferably Microsoft Word and, if the manuscript is accepted for publication, the author should be prepared to submit a second version as an RTF file. At the time of submission corresponding authors should provide a letter that: (i) gives assurance that their manuscript represents original work that is not being considered for publication, in whole or in part, by another journal; (ii) states whether the manuscript is one of a kind, or part of a study or thesis from which other manuscripts may be generated; (iii) confirms that all of the authors have read and approved the manuscript; and (iv) provides the names of colleagues who have reviewed the manuscript in the final stages. Manuscripts Manuscripts should be either in English (Canadian spelling, Canadian Oxford Dictionary) or French. They should be typed double-spaced in 12-point Times Roman, have page numbers, and no right margin justification. Manuscripts should contain a title page, an abstract, key words, a list of cited references tables and figures including captions* * For initial submission, figures should be included within the text of the manuscript. Once the paper has been accepted authors must submit electronic copies of the original electronic files (i.e., the files directly from the software application that they were created in) and high-quality laser proofs of the images. Do not use bitmap or nonstandard fonts. All figures should be submitted at their final published size. For figures with several parts (e.g. a, b, c, etc.) and created using the same software application, assemble them into one file rather than sending several files. Title page should contain the full names of all authors including their academic or other professional affiliations, and complete mailing and email addresses. It should also identify the author with whom the editors should correspond. Acknowledgements should be added on this page. Abstracts should not exceed 300 words and summarize the purpose, methodology, and major findings of the paper. Up to six keywords should be included. Footnotes should be kept to an absolute minimum and placed at the bottom of the page. Discursive endnotes are discouraged. References Citations should be quoted in text by typing in parentheses the last name(s) of author(s) followed by the year the work was published. Immediately after the text under the heading ¡®References¡¯ list complete citations alphabetically by the senior author¡¯s last name. Articles not yet published should be referred to as ¡°forthcoming¡±. Titles of periodicals should be given in full. For examples of correct citations please refer to a current issue of The Canadian Geographer. Units of Measure and Monetary Units Authors must use the international system of units (metric) but may show other units in parentheses. Authors must use the Canadian dollar as the standard monetary unit, although the use of other units in parentheses is encouraged. Equations should be numbered sequentially in parentheses in the right-hand margin. Common statistical variables should be set in italics. Acronyms should be spelled out the first time they are used within a paper. Illustrations All figures and tables should be mentioned explicitly and in numerical order in the text and should be numbered sequentially with Arabic numbers (e.g. Figure 3). If a figure or table comes from another source, full citation of that source should be provided in the references section. For the initial submission, figures may be included within the text as Word or Adobe Acrobat files. Readers should be able to understand all illustrations without reference to the text. Permission to reprint Whenever a manuscript contains material (tables, figures, charts, etc.) that is protected by copyright, it is the obligation of the author to secure written permission from the holder of the copyright to reproduce the material in both print and electronic formats. These letters must accompany the submitted manuscript. Copyright transfer All authors are required to complete a copyright transfer form assigning all rights to the Canadian Association of Geographers. Copyright transfer forms are available from the Editors. Requests for permission to republish the paper, in whole or in part, should be emailed to tcg.editor@cag-acg.ca.
