About the journal
The mission of Operations Research is to serve the entire Operations Research (OR) community, including practitioners, researchers, educators, and students. Operations Research, as the flagship journal of our profession, strives to publish results that are truly insightful. Each issue of Operations Research attempts to provide a balance of well-written articles that span the wide array of creative activities in OR. Thus, the major criteria for acceptance of a paper in Operations Research are that the paper is important to more than a small subset of the OR community, contains important insights, and makes a substantial contribution to the field that will stand the test of time.
Instructions to Authors Manuscript Preparation: Operations Research publishes quality operations research and management science work of interest to the OR practitioner and researcher in three substantive categories: methods, data based operational science, and the practice of OR. The journal seeks papers reporting underlying data based principles of operational science, observations and modeling of operating systems, contributions to the methods and models of OR, case histories of applications, review articles, and discussions of the administrative environment, history, policy, practice, future, and arenas of application of operations research.
Complete studies that contain data, computer experiments, and model validation, and that integrate theory, methods, and applications are of particular interest. Thus, we encourage case studies of lasting value.
The Technical Notes section of the journal contains brief articles on all of the topics covered by the journal. For more information on subject coverage and editorial policy, see the Area Editor statements.
Manuscript Submission: Operations Research uses the online submission resources of Manuscript Central. If you are submitting your manuscript for the first time, please proceed to our online submission site at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/opre and follow the instructions there. If your paper was submitted prior to September 1, 2005 and you were requested to make revisions, please do not use the online submission system. Please send your revision directly to the Area Editor who handled the previous version(s) of your paper. If you are not sure about the area or your paper is not in the fields covered by the Area Editors, please submit the paper to the Editor-in-Chief, David Simchi-Levi. Papers should not be sent to the Associate Editors.
Responsibility: Submission of a manuscript is a representation that the paper has neither been published nor submitted for publication elsewhere, and that, if the work is officially sponsored, it has been released for open publication. Rights and Permissions: For information regarding INFORMS policies on rights and permissions, see http://www.informs.org/Pubs
Text: The text should be arranged as follows: title page, abstract, introduction, main sections, appendix, acknowledgment, and references. Appendices and an acknowledgment are optional. There is no limit on the length of a submitted paper. However, there is a limit on the number of pages published in the printed version. This limit is of 30 pages in length double-spaced with a minimum of 11 pt font size. The page limit includes all text, tables, figures, etc. All material beyond this limit will be published in the online supplement of the journal. In addition, if a paper is accepted for publication, the Area Editor or Editor-in-Chief may request (or require) that supporting appendix material be placed online at the Operations Research website, even when not exceeding the 30 page limit. Authors should consider this either during the initial submission phase or during the final revisions of the paper and may wish to design their papers accordingly. Details: Authors should observe the following points in preparing manuscripts. Papers not conforming closely to these instructions may be returned to their authors for appropriate revisions or may be delayed in the review process.
Personal Web Sites: As a condition of final acceptance of a paper for publication in Operations Research, the author(s) must indicate if their paper is posted on a working paper website, other than their own. They are responsible for assuring that, if any part of the paper has been copyrighted for prepublication as a working paper, the copyright can and will be transferred to INFORMS when the paper has been accepted. This includes both print and electronic forms of the paper. Authors may post their working papers on websites after acceptance and prior to publication, as long as the sites are not copyrighted or do not serve as formal repositories.
Upon publication, INFORMS will provide authors with a complimentary pdf file of the published paper to be posted on the author's personal website. The pdf reflects the paper as it was published by INFORMS. INFORMS does not allow authors to post the pdf in formal repositories that many universities are setting up where they aggregate the papers published by their faculty, as well as in subject-based repositories.
