Instructions to Authors

Submission Guidelines

This document provides the instructions to follow to submit a paper to M&SOM. Your submission is considered active (for cycle time tracking purposes) only when you have completed all of the requirements in this document. The information requested is used to ensure you receive a high quality and unbiased review in a timely manner.

The first part of this document discusses the required formatting of all manuscripts. The second part provides two sets of directions, one to submit a new manuscript and one to submit a revision.  (A revision of a manuscript that was previously rejected is considered a new submission and must follow the new submission process.)

Length and formatting requirements

There is no a priori page limit for M&SOM submissions. However, succinctness is not only desired, it is expected. Associate Editors and reviewers are not required to respond in a rapid manner to excessively long and/or poorly written manuscripts.

Please write your paper in LaTex/Tex and use the following sample file as a template:  MSOM2e.tex

To implement the above sample file, place the following file in the same directory as your ".tex" file:  secdot.sty

If you insist, you may write in MS-Word (but in case this is not obvious, this is surely not the preferred option). Use the following file as a template:  MSOMWordtemplate.doc

There are no other templates to choose from, i.e., the only acceptable templates are the two above.

To submit a new manuscript

To submit a new manuscript to M&SOM (which conforms to the above formatting requirements) you must complete the submission process on the Manuscript Central website
http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/msom

In MC there are seven steps in the submission process.  Much of the submission process is self-explanatory (e.g., the field to enter the title of the paper).  The following lists the steps in the process and provides instructions to complete each step that are not obvious.

Step 1: Type, Title, & Abstract - Self-explanatory.

Step 2: Attributes - Self-explanatory.

Step 3: Authors & Institutions - Self-explanatory.

Step 4: Reviewers & Editors - You must enter 6 preferred reviewers and 3 Associate Editors. Regular Associate Editors (list of regular AEs) are preferred but you may also include Guest Associate Editors if you feel their expertise is particularly appropriate for the manuscript.

Step 5: Details & Comments - This is where you upload your cover letter. See below for the required and extensive contents of the cover letter. The cover letter will be viewed by the Editor and the Associate Editor but will not be viewed by the reviewers.

Step 6: File Upload - This is where you upload your manuscript and any supplemental materials. A technical appendix is considered a "supplemental material". Supplemental materials are viewed by the Editor, Associate Editor and reviewers. See below for information on what these files should contain.

Step 7: Review & Submit - Self-explanatory.

Manuscript file

The file is a PDF of your paper.  This file should contain the paper's title, abstract, main body, references, figures, tables and appendices.  This file should provide no indication of the authors' identities (i.e., names or affiliations).  Be sure that there is no personal information in the "DocumentProperties" field. Please give this file a name that follows the following useful form: "First author's last name - short version of the title.pdf".  For example,  "gaur - hedging inventory risk.pdf" for Guar, V., S. Seshadri. 2005. Hedging inventory risk through market instruments. MSOM. 7(2). 103-120.

Supplemental material file

This is not required but authors may submit additional materials that are not part of the main manuscript file.  As with the manuscript file, this must be a PDF and not contain any direct information to identify the authors.  Give this file a name with the following form:  "First author's last name - short version of the title - type of material.pdf", such as "gaur - hedging inventory risk - technical appendix.pdf".

Cover letter

This PDF file is required.  It provides important information to the Editor and Associate Editor. Give this file a name with the following form: "First author's last name - short version of the title - cover.pdf", such as "gaur - hedging inventory risk - cover.pdf".  This file may begin with a traditional cover letter if the authors desire. What is not optional is that this file must contain the following information, numbered and in the following sequence:  (This file contains some information that is also inputted into MC in the author submission process.  This redundancy is necessary and useful.)

Manuscript's title and the file name containing the manuscript.

Corresponding author's (i) name, (ii) e-mail address, (iii) phone number, (iv) institutional affiliation, (v) mailing address, and (vi) FAX number.

Co-authors' (i) names, (ii) e-mail addresses, (iii) institutional affiliations.

A non-technical abstract, which may be the same as the paper's abstract. This should be the same abstract inputted in Step 1 of the submission process in MC.

Several appropriate keywords. These should be the same abstract inputted in Step 2 of the submission process in MC.

The paper's submission category (Regular Manuscript, OM Forum, etc.)

The name and email addresses of the SIX most appropriate reviewers for this paper, in decreasing order of appropriateness with the most appropriate listed first. These should be the same persons listed in Step 4 of the submission process in MC. These persons should have no conflict of interest with any of the authors of the paper. A conflict of interest exists if the person is a major thesis advisor of the author(s) or a former student whose thesis the author(s) have supervised or employees of the same company or institution as the author(s) or a co-author of recently-completed work or work in progress with the author(s).

The name and email addresses of the THREE most appropriate Associate Editors for this paper in decreasing order of appropriateness with the most appropriate listed first. Regular Associate Editors are preferred (see the list of Editorial Board members) but guest Associate Editors are allowed. These should be the same persons listed in Step 4 of the submission process in MC. Please provide a brief reason why each person is on your list, in particular if the person is not a regular Associate Editor. As with the preferred reviewers list, these individuals should have no conflict of interest with any of the authors of the paper.

List the complete reference to the SIX most relevant articles (published or not published) to this manuscript in decreasing order of relevance with the most relevant listed first.  This list will help the Editor and Associate Editor understand how your paper is positioned in the literature. (If there are fewer than six related papers, provide the entire list of relevant papers and briefly explain why there are only a few relevant papers.)

Please describe any unusual expertise needed to evaluate this manuscript (e.g., theoretical, methodological, industry-specific, etc.).  If an expertise is listed, briefly explain.

Please indicate if there are any reviewers or Associate Editors that are inappropriate to read your paper. If so, explain why.

Do you have any comments for the Editor or Associate Editor? (For example: Do you expect this manuscript to be controversial? Is the subject material particularly timely? Are there special problems in making this manuscript readable?)

To submit a revision of a manuscript

To submit a revision of a manuscript to M&SOM (which conforms to the above formatting requirements) you must complete the revision submission process on the Manuscript Central website:
http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/msom

This process is mostly self-explanatory. As with a new submission you must submit PDF files with approved formatting. The main manuscript file should contain the paper's title, abstract, main body, references, figures, tables and appendices. This file should provide no indication of the authors' identities (i.e., names or affiliations). Be sure that there is no personal information in the "Document Properties" field. Please give this file a name that follows the following useful form: "original version's tracking number - Rn.pdf", where "n" is the nth revision of the paper. For example the 1st revision of MSOM-06-0051 should be named "MSOM-06-0051-R1.pdf".

Upload the PDF file that contains the response to the previous reports as a supplemental file (Step 6 of the process). Give this file a name with the following form: "original version's tracking number - Rn - response to reviews.pdf", where again "n" is the nth revision of the paper. For example the response to reviews on the original version of the paper MSOM-06-0051 should be named "MSOM-06-0051-R1-response to reviews.pdf". The response to the reviewers should begin with a general description of all major changes made in the paper. Please indicate if a change is in response to a particular reader (reviewers, AE and/or Editor). This general description should be targeted to all of the readers. The authors may choose to have subsequent sections that target specific readers, but those sections should not repeat portions of the first section, i.e., it should be assumed that all readers will read the initial section describing the changes in the paper. A cover letter can be uploaded but is not necessary.
