About the journal
The INDEPENDENT REVIEW is the acclaimed interdisciplinary journal devoted to the study of political economy and the critical analysis of government policy. Edited by the noted historian and economist, Robert Higgs, The Independent Review is thoroughly researched, peer-reviewed, and based on scholarship of the highest caliber. However, unlike so many other journals, it is also provocative, lucid, and written in an engaging style. Ranging across the fields of economics, political science, law, history, philosophy, and sociology, The Independent Review boldly challenges the politicization and bureaucratization of our world, featuring in-depth examinations of past, present, and future policy issues by some of the world's leading scholars and experts.
Undaunted and uncompromising, this is the journal that is pioneering future debate!
Instructions to Authors
Instructions for Manuscript Submission
The Independent Review is published four times annually by The Independent Institute, a nonprofit, nonpartisan, scholarly research and educational organization that sponsors studies of the political economy of critical public issues. The editor invites submission of articles that deal with important issues in political economy. Authors may adopt the approaches of economics or other social sciences, history, law, or political philosophy. Both positive and normative analyses will be considered. Because The Independent Review seeks a broad audience, papers should be interesting and comprehensible beyond narrow disciplinary bounds.
Manuscripts of articles for The Independent Review should not exceed 10,000 words and should be submitted directly to the editor as an attachment, preferably a Microsoft Word file, to an e-mail message. Alternatively, manuscripts may be submitted in triplicate, typed double-spaced with ample margins, with the author's name, address, and phone number on a separate title page only. An abstract of about 150 words should be included.
Accepted manuscripts must conform to The Independent Review's style requirements, which are guided by The Chicago Manual of Style (14th Edition) and Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (10th Edition). Citations should be in the author-date format, with full bibliographic information in a reference list and substantive notes prepared as numbered footnotes. Quotations of more than 100 words should be indented from the left and preceded and followed by an extra line of space.
Unsolicited manuscripts must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope, with enough postage to ensure return. Submissions should be addressed to the following:
