About the journal
Women's Health Issues (WHI) is a peer-reviewed, bimonthly, multidisciplinary journal that publishes research and review manuscripts related to women's health care and policy. As the official journal of the Jacobs Institute of Women's Health, it is dedicated to improving the health and health care of all women throughout the lifespan and in diverse communities. The journal seeks to inform health services researchers, health care and public health professionals, social scientists, policymakers, and others concerned with women's health.
Women's Health Issues ranks 2nd in a field of 27 in the category of Womens Studies, according to the 2005 Journal Citation Report? published by Thomson Scientific.

Instructions to Authors
Women's Health Issues is the peer-reviewed, bimonthly, multidisciplinary journal of the Jacobs Institute of Women's Health. It publishes original research, rigorous scientifically-based review articles, and invited editorials and commentaries related to women's health care and policy. The journal give priority to scholarly articles that report the results of original research and that improve understanding of how social, health care, and policy factors relate to women's health. All manuscripts are subject to peer-review under the direction of the editors. Published manuscripts are abstracted and indexed in leading services, including Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, EMBASE/Excerpta Medica, Index Medicus, ISI's Current Contents/Social & Behavioral Sciences Research Alert and Social SciSearch, Sociological Abstracts, and Studies on Women Abstracts. Unsolicited manuscripts are invited that address women's health issues relating to the mission of the journal. Further information is available at www.jiwh.org. SUBMISSION
Manuscripts should be submitted electronically to the editor, Carol S. Weisman, PhD, at the following email address:whieditor@gwu.edu. The electronic copy should include the title page, abstract, manuscript including references, and all tables and figures. Please specify the software and version used (e.g., MS Word 2000, Word Perfect 6.1). Authors are asked to suggest 2-3 potential reviewers for the manuscript with contact information.

Manuscripts submitted in hard copy must be submitted with an electronic copy on disk. The hard copy and electronic copy must match exactly. In the event that a disk cannot be converted, the hard copy version will be used.
MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION
In general, manuscripts should contain 3,000 to 4,000 words, excluding front matter, references, and tables and figures. Manuscripts should be double-spaced, using a font no smaller than 12 points. Pages should be numbered. Sections should include: title page, abstract page, manuscript text, acknowledgments, references, tables' and illustrations.
The title page should provide a descriptive title for the manuscript; the names, academic degrees, affiliations, and contact information (mailing address, email address, phone and fax numbers) for all authors; designation of the corresponding author; and a statement of any funding sources for the work reported in the manuscript. An acknowledgement must state all funding support for the research including any support from the NIH. Each author of an accepted manuscript will be asked to submit a one-sentence statement of research interests or areas of expertise for publication with the manuscript.
The second page should provide an abstract no longer than 250 words including the following information: the paper's purpose or research question; the methods used; the main findings; and conclusion. The abstract page should not include the names of the authors. The manuscript text should be organized using subheads, with the following sections as a guide: introduction and background; methods; results; conclusions and discussion.
References must adhere to the specifications of the American Psychological Association.
Tables, graphs, and illustrations must have fully descriptive legends. Tables and graphs should be prepared on separately numbered pages and be formatted in the American Psychological Association style. All tables must be double-spaced. For illustrations, two sets of unmounted glossy photographic prints no larger than 5 x 7 inches must be provided.
Note to NIH Grant Recipients: Authors who are accepted for publication in Women's Health Issues after May 2, 2005 may indicate that they wish to meet the NIH request for public access to their manuscript by sending an e-mail to NIHauthorrequest@elsevier.com. Please be sure to include your NIH grant/project number, as well as the name and e-mail address of the Prinical Investigator(s). Elsevier will subsequently send the author's manuscript incorporating changes made during the peer review process to PubMed Central and authorize its posting 12 months after final publication. Elsevier will also obtain the PMC submission identification number and communicate this number to the author for NIH administrative purposes.
PEER REVIEW
The journal uses blind peer review: authors' names are removed from the manuscripts when they are sent for peer review, and the names of reviewers are not disclosed to authors. All manuscripts will be reviewed by at least two reviewers selected by the editors. Authors are encouraged to submit the names and contact information for 2-3 appropriate peer reviewers for their manuscript. Authors will receive copies of the reviewers' comments. The journal strives to provide reviews to the authors within three months of the date of submission. Possible editorial decisions that may result from the peer review are: accept as written; accept with minor revisions; revise and resubmit; reject. When revisions are requested, the editor will specify the time frame for resubmission. The journal's policy is to allow no more than two revisions of a manuscript.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Letters to the editor commenting on a journal article or on an issue in women's health care or policy will be considered for publication, space permitting. The editor reserves the right to shorten letters and to make minor editorial revisions. Only a selection of letters submitted will be published.
AUTHORS' CERTIFICATION
Women's Health Issues publishes only original reports of research findings that have not been previously published and are not under consideration by another journal. Each and every author must sign the following statement, which should be submitted with the manuscript.
"I certify that this material has not been published previously and is not under consideration by another journal. Ifurther certify that I have had substantive involvement in the preparation of this manuscript and am fully familiar with its content."
