About the journal
About the Journal

The Wisconsin Law Review is a student-run journal of legal analysis and commentary that is used by professors, judges, practitioners, and others researching contemporary legal topics. The Wisconsin Law Review, which is published six times each year, includes professional and student articles, with content spanning local, state, national, and international topics. In addition to publishing the journal, the Wisconsin Law Review sponsors an annual symposium at which leading scholars debate a significant issue in contemporary law.

University of Wisconsin Law School students and faculty founded the Wisconsin Law Review in 1920. In 1935, students were designated as its sole editors. Approximately 1100 copies of the Wisconsin Law Review are distributed to subscribers worldwide. Each issue typically contains two or three professional articles and two or three student articles that address timely and relevant legal topics. The Wisconsin Law Review usually publishes one special issue each year. Recent special issues include our Symposium, The Future of Monopoly and Monopolization (Volume 2008, Issue 2).

More information regarding the history of the Wisconsin Law Review is available in two articles prepared on our 75th anniversary: John S. Skilton,
Turning the Pages, 1995 Wis. L. Rev. 1461, and Michael H. Wussow, A Law Review for Wisconsin, 1995 Wis. L. Rev. 1475.

Instructions to Authors

Wisconsin Law Review seeks articles that address timely and relevant legal topics of state, national or international significance. We are particularly interested in receiving concise, readable articles. (See 2000 Wis. L. Rev. Issue 3.) If you would like to submit a manuscript for consideration, please review the following guidelines:

Manuscripts should be double spaced with at least 1" margins and must be on 8?"x 11" white-recycled or white-bond paper.
Text and citations must conform to The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (18th ed. 2005) and the Chicago Manual of Style (15th ed. 2003).
Electronic submissions are accepted exclusively via the ExpressO online submission service. Electronic manuscripts sent via email will NOT be accepted, unless the article is simultaneously submitted via hard copy.
Manuscripts cannot be returned except upon receipt of postage and handling fees of US $5.00.

Length Policy
There is an emerging consensus among American law reviews, lawyers and law school professors that many law review articles have become too long and cumbersome. This view is shared by the current (and many past) members of the Wisconsin Law Review.

Accordingly, and in line with new editorial policies announced by other American law reviews, as of January 1, 2006, the Wisconsin Law Review will give preference to articles not in excess of 37,000 words, including text and footnotes, as measured by Microsoft Word’s word count feature. (A typical Law Review page contains about 500 words.) In selecting articles for publication, weight will be given to submissions closer to 20,000 words in length.

Articles submitted prior to January 1, 2006 will not be subject to this new policy. Authors who wish to submit articles over the length limit should attach to their submission an explanation of why they believe “exceptional circumstances?should apply. Comments and suggestions from Law Review readers respecting the new policy are welcome.
