About the journal

Teaching and Teacher Education aims to enhance theory, research, and practice in teaching and teacher education through the publication of papers concerned with the description of teaching, teaching effectiveness, the factors that determine teachers' thought processes and performances, and the social policies that affect teachers in all aspects and stages of their careers. The journal will recognize that many disciplines - psychology, sociology, anthropology, economics, political science, history, and philosophy - have important contributions to make to the achievement of its goals, and the Editors welcome contributions from them. In the absence of any dominant paradigm, the journal will allow varied approaches to offer empirical research, theoretical and conceptual analyses, and reviews (both qualitative and quantitative syntheses) of high quality.
Papers should be concerned primarily with teachers, teaching, or teacher education at whatever grade, level, or whatever subject-matter, at any stage of the teacher's career.

Instructions to Authors
Submission of Manuscripts
As of August 30th 2005, all manuscripts must be submitted through the Teaching and Teacher Education online submission and review Web site (http://ees.elsevier.com/tate).
Authors are requested to submit the text, tables, and artwork in electronic form to this address. In an accompanying letter, authors should state that the manuscript, or parts of it, have not been and will not be submitted elsewhere for publication.
Submission items include a cover letter, the manuscript (including title page, abstract, manuscript text, references, and table/figure legends), tables, and figures. Revised manuscripts should also be accompanied by a unique file (separate from the covering letter) with responses to reviewers' comments. The preferred order of files is as follows: cover letter, suggested reviewers, response to reviews (revised manuscripts only), manuscript file(s), table(s), figure(s). Files should be labeled with appropriate and descriptive file names (e.g., SmithText.doc, Fig1.eps, Table3.doc). Upload text, tables and graphics as separate files. Do not import figures or tables into the text document. Complete instructions for electronic artwork submission can be found on the Author Gateway, accessible through the journal home page.
Authors who are unable to provide an electronic version or have other circumstances that prevent online submission must contact the Editorial Office prior to submission to discuss alternate options. Emailtate@cardiff.ac.uk The Publisher and Editor regret that they are not able to consider submissions that do not follow these procedures.
Illustrations
All illustrations should be uploaded in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams should all be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript when first submitted via the http://ees.elsevier.com/tate website, but should not be included within the text.
If authors are unable to upload images they should contact the journal Editorial Office prior to submission to discuss alternate options.
Abstract and Keywords
An abstract not exceeding 100 words must be provided; this abstract will appear at the beginning of the paper. Authors should include up to six keywords with their article. The controlled list of keywords is based on the ERIC list of index descriptors, however, Authors may include one or two additional 'free' keywords if they wish to do so.
Line Drawings
All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.
Photographs
Original photographs must be uploaded as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white).
Captions
Ensure that each illustration has a caption. Supply captions within a separate uploaded file, not within the figure. A caption should comprise a brief title (not on the figure itself) and a description of the illustration.
Colour Illustrations
Submit colour illustrations as original uploaded photographs close to the size expected in publication. If, together with your accepted article, you submit usable colour figures then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in colour on the web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether or not these illustrations are reproduced in colour in the printed version. For colour reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article.
For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please see http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork.
Please note: If the decision is made not to reproduce colour prints in the printed copy of the journal the images will be converted to 'grey scale' for inclusion. Because of technical complications which can arise when converting colour figures to 'grey scale' you may be asked to submit in addition usable black and white prints corresponding to all the colour illustrations.
Tables
Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript (eg graphs).
Copyright
Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to transfer copyright (for more information on copyright see http://authors.elsevier.com. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. A letter will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript. A form facilitating transfer of copyright will be provided.
If excerpts from other copyrighted works are included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: contact Elsevier Global Rights and Permissions Department, P.O. Box 800, Oxford, OX5 1DX, UK; phone: (+44) 1865 843830, fax: (+44) 1865 853333, e-mail: permissions@elsevier.com
Proofs
When the manuscript for your accepted article is received, it is considered to be in its final form. Proofs are not to be regarded as 'drafts'.
Proofs will be sent to the author (first-named author if no corresponding author is identified on multi-authored papers) by PDF wherever possible and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt, preferably by email. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any other amendments may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Elsevier will do everything possible to get your article corrected and published as quickly and accurately as possible. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all of your corrections are returned to us in one all-inclusive email or fax. Subsequent additional corrections will not be possible, so please ensure that your first communication is complete.
Offprints
Twenty-five offprints will be supplied to the corresponding author free of charge. Additional offprints can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints (produced after publication of an article) will incur a 50% surcharge.
Author Enquiries
Authors can also keep a track on the progress of their accepted article, and set up e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the "Track a Paper" feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway.
Full details of electronic submission and formats can be obtained from http://authors.elsevier.com
Contact details for questions arising after acceptance of an article, especially those relating to proofs, are provided when an article is accepted for publication.
