Instructions to Authors

The Editors welcome scholarly papers, addressing theoretical, empirical and methodological concerns and initiating dialogue on critical issues which contribute to the development and understanding of the caring sciences. Ethical considerations must be discussed as appropriate.

Papers are expected to have a focus on those receiving care, and a sound scientific, theoretical or philosophical base. All submissions are expected to demonstrate respect for human dignity and accountability to society.

Papers exceeding 5000 words will not usually be accepted. It is not journal policy to publish papers submitted in two parts. All manuscripts are double-blind refereed. Review papers should include the words 'review' or 'literature review' in the title.

Papers received are assumed to have been submitted exclusively to the Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. It is a condition of publication that authors grant the Nordic College of Caring Sciences the exclusive licence to publish all articles including abstracts. Papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless the exclusive licence to publish has been granted. The exclusive licence form is available by clicking HERE. If the paper is part of a larger study and you, or other authors, have written additional papers that have been published/submitted for publication using the study as the basis for the article, you must contact the Editor with details to ensure there is no breach of copyright.
Any breach of copyright will be taken very seriously and appropriate action taken.

The Editors will decide on the time of publication and retain the right to modify the style of a contribution; major changes will be
agreed with the author(s).

Manuscripts
All manuscripts should be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/sjcs. All parts of the manuscript must be available in an electronic format. Full instructions and support are available on the site and a user ID and password can be obtained on the first visit. Support can be contacted by phone (+1 434 817 2040 ext. 167), e-mail (support@scholarone.com) or at http://blackwellsupport.custhelp.com. If you cannot submit online, please contact Gareth Watkins in the Editorial Office by telephone +44 (0)1865 476524) or by e-mail (gwatkins@wiley.com).

A covering letter must be submitted as part of the online submission process, stating on behalf of all the authors that the work has not been published and is not being considered for publication elsewhere. A statement regarding ethical approval must also be included giving details of whether ethical approval was sought, and if relevant the name of the committee or institution which approved the study and a reference number.

The use of footnotes and appendices should be avoided.

The main text should be preceded by an abstract, not exceeding 300 words, which accurately summarises the aims, findings and conclusions of the study. In the case of reported empirical research, the summary should include as appropriate: the study's rationale, aims and objectives; methodological design and justification; ethical issues and approval; research methods, instruments and/or interventions; outcome measures; results; study limitations; and conclusions. The abstract should not include references or abbreviations.

The abstract should be followed by up to 10 keywords or short phrases for indexing purposes, which accurately identify the paper's subject, purpose and focus. If your paper is a review the keywords should included 'literature review'. When submitting your paper online you will also be asked to select keywords from a given list. These are used to help the Editor identify suitable reviewers.

No identifying details of the authors or their institutions must appear in the submitted manuscript. A separate title page should be submitted with author details. The title page must also include statements as follows:
Acknowledgments: Any acknowledgments must not be included in the main document but should be added to the title page.
Author contribution: Where there is more than one author a written statement must be provided giving details of all authors' involvement (study conception/design; data collection/analysis; drafting of manuscript; critical revisions for important intellectual content; supervision; statistical expertise; administrative/technical/material support)
Funding: Please state whether funding was obtained and where applicable provide the name of the funding body and a reference number.
This information will be an appending part of the published paper if it is accepted by the Journal.

Figures, illustrations, legends, tables and references should be prepared on separate sheets. The appropriate insertion points for figures and tables should be indicated in the text. In the full-text online edition of the journal, figure legends may be truncated in abbreviated links to the full screen version. Therefore, the first 100 characters of any legend should inform the reader of the key aspects of the figure.

Approval for reproduction/modification of any material (including figures and tables) published elsewhere should be obtained from authors/copyright holders before submission of the manuscript. Contributors are responsible for any copyright fee involved.

Headings within the text should conform to the following convention: upper case for main headings, lower case for major sub-headings, italics for subsidiary sub-headings. Exceptionally, a lower case, smaller font heading may be used to head sub texts, for example for case studies or vignettes within the text.

Language and Spelling should conform with that used in the Concise Oxford Dictionary and abbreviations with those in Units, Symbols, and Abbreviations (1994) published by the Royal Society of Medicine Press, 1 Wimpole Street, London, W1M 8AE.
Manuscripts must be written in correct English. Authors with English as a foreign language are advised to have their manuscript revised by a qualified translator or native speaker before submission.

Abbreviations should be used sparingly and only if a lengthy name or expression is repeated throughout the manuscript. When used, the abbreviated name or expression should be cited in full at first usage, followed by the accepted abbreviation in parentheses.

Quotations included appropriately within the body of the text should be marked by double inverted commas. Longer, or self-contained quotations should be preceded and followed by a double space; neither inverted commas nor italics should then be used.
Exceptionally, where emphasis is required, a word or phrase may be marked by single inverted commas or italics.

Statistical methods and other methods for analysis used should be defined and, where appropriate, supported by references.

NEW: Early View
Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences is covered by Blackwell Publishing's Early View service. Early View articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. OnlineEarly articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors' final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of Early View articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so OnlineEarly articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article.

Authors' original materials
Unless specifically requested by a society or individual author, hardcopy and electronic materials will be retained for no longer than two months following publication of each issue. Any hardcopy and electronic material should then be disposed of or recycled. This includes original artwork, hardcopy text and any accompanying disks/cd roms. Any author wishing for any of their materials to be returned should alert the Production Editor via the Editorial Office at the submission stage, or at the latest to the Production Editor directly on receipt of proofs. No responsibility will be taken for author material being destroyed if there has been no indication given that it should be returned.

Online production tracking is now available for your article through Wiley-Blackwell's Author Services.
Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/ for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.

Proofs
Proofs will be sent via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file and must be returned promptly. The e-mail server must be able to accept attachments up to 4 MB in size. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following Web site:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Major changes will not be entertained and authors may be charged for excessive amendments at this stage. Proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available; in your absence, please arrange for a colleague to access your e-mail to retrieve the proofs.

Offprints
Authors will be provided with electronic offprints on publication of their paper. These will be sent to the corresponding author at his or her e-mail address. Electronic offprints are sent to the corresponding author at his or her e-mail address on the title page of the paper, unless advised otherwise. Additional paper offprints may be ordered online.
