About the journal

Pacific Affairs is a scholarly journal focussing on important current political, economic and social issues throughout Asia and the Pacific. Each issue contains approximately four new articles and 50 book reviews.

Published since 1927, Pacific Affairs enjoys an international reputation and attracts top scholars. It provides essential information for anyone seeking balanced knowledge of the dynamic Asian scene.

Instructions to Authors

Pacific Affairs welcomes the submission of manuscripts dealing with the contemporary social, economic and political affairs of Asia and the Pacific. Papers concerned with historical topics will be considered, provided they are clearly relevant to the contemporary scene.

Manuscripts must not exceed 8,000 words (or approximately 25 pages), in length (including footnotes). They must be typewritten, doublespaced and with footnotes (also double-spaced) grouped together at the end of the paper. The style of the text and footnotes must conform to that used in this journal. Please click the Style Guide button above to see further details and as per The Chicago Manual of Style, 14th Edition, 1993. Submissions may be made either by sending a commonly-used word processing computer file (Microsoft Word or WordPerfect) by e-mail, to enquiry@pacificaffairs.ubc.ca, or by mailing a total of four paper copies of a manuscript to the Editorial Office (1 copy is retained in the office, 3 for referees). Papers with tables, charts, and orthography not common to English word processing should also be submitted in at least one hard copy. Authors should have a computer file version of their manuscript available as Pacific Affairs will request authors to submit a disk version upon acceptance for publication. Submission of a manuscript implies that it has not previously been published, and that it is not currently on offer to another publisher; submissions should include a letter confirming this. A rejected manuscript will not be returned to the author unless the submission letter requests such action. The articles in Pacicic Affairs do not represent the views of the University of British Columbia. The editor is responsible for the selection and acceptance of articles, but responsibility for opinions expressed in them rests with their authors.
