About the journal

sewanee_review cover

Having never missed an issue in 114 years, the Sewanee Review is the oldest continuously published literary quarterly in the country. Begun in 1892 at the University of the South, it has stood as guardian and steward for the enduring voices of American, British, and Irish literature. Published quarterly (winter, spring, summer, fall), the Review is unique in the field of letters for its rich tradition of literary excellence in general nonfiction, poetry, and fiction, and for its dedication to unvarnished no-nonsense literary criticism. Each volume is a mix of short reviews, omnibus reviews, memoirs, essays in reminiscence and criticism, poetry, and fiction. Each issue coheres around a broad theme, such as Irish literature, southern letters, the literature of war, the modern Catholic novel, autobiography, and many other engaging topics. In this venerable journal you have the direct literary line to Flannery O'Connor, Robert Penn Warren, Hart Crane, Anne Sexton, Harry Crews, and Fred Chappell¡ªnot to mention, Andre Dubus and Cormac McCarthy, whose first stories were published in the Sewanee Review. Each issue is a brilliant seminar, an unforgettable dinner party, an all-night swap of stories and passionate stances. We invite you to subscribe to the Sewanee Review and explore the content that makes this magazine the most highly regarded of any literary quarterly in the world.

Editorial correspondence

For matters of spelling and usage, consult the The Chicago Manual of Style , 15th edition; Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th edition; and Webster's Third New International Dictionary. Unsolicited submissions should be original double-spaced typescripts mailed to the editor at 735 University Avenue, Sewanee TN 37383-1000. No electronic submissions are accepted at this time. A self-addressed stamped envelope must be supplied for reply. Rejected submissions without sufficient return postage will be discarded. No responsibility can be assumed for loss or damage. Only unpublished original work (no translations) can be considered.

Queries are suitable for essays (7500 words or less) and reviews (unsolicited reviews are rarely accepted). Send fiction and poetry without writing in advance. Poems (40 lines or less) should not exceed 6 per submission; stories (3500-7500 words; no short short-stories, please) should be sent individually. For each poem published, roughly 250 poems are considered here; for each story, 150 stories.

The average time to reply to a submission is four to six weeks. We do not accept simultaneous submissions. When you have sent one submission, please do not send another before you have received a reply to the first. Unsolicited works should not be submitted between June 1st and August 31st. A response to any submission received during that period may be greatly delayed.

The Sewanee Review awards four prizes annually to the best short fiction, poetry, essay, and book reviewing of the previous year. The Aiken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry is presented annually to established poets. Winners of these awards are determined by the board of editors and a prize committee; one cannot apply for any of them.

For information about literary magazines see the current editions of the International Directory of Little Magazines and Small Presses, Literary Market Place, Magazine Industry Market Place, and Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory.

The Sewanee Review is America's oldest continuously published literary quarterly. Only erudite work representing depth of knowledge and skill of expression is published here. We urge you to read at least one issue of the magazine before submitting any work.

Thank you for your interest in the Sewanee Review.
