About the journal

The Lion and the Unicorn is a theme- and genre-centered journal of international scope committed to a serious, ongoing discussion of literature for children. The journal's coverage includes the state of the publishing industry, comparative studies of significant books, developments in theory, the art of illustration, and popular culture.

Author Guidelines
The Lion and the Unicorn is a peer-reviewed journal which critically examines children's literature within the wider concepts of children's and adolescent culture. General issues and special issues are published. Interviews with children's authors and reflective essays are occasionally published. L&U aims to promote research within the international community of the interdisciplinary field of children's literature and culture.

Guidelines for Submission
Manuscripts should follow the format outlined in the MLA Handbook. All text must be double-spaced in a clear, easy to read 12-point typeface on 8 1/2 x11 inch white paper. Text should be left justified with one-inch margins. Manuscripts are not to exceed thirty (30) pages of typewritten, double-spaced pages. This page count includes the Notes section and the Work Cited section which should be double spaced. Two (2) print copies and one (1) copy of a computer disk in Microsoft Word format, should be submitted along with a cover page which provides the title, author's names, and address (including email address for correspondence and proofs). Please do not include author's name on the manuscript pages. The Lion and the Unicorn will acknowledge receipt of your manuscript, usually by email. Manuscripts are reviewed by editors and the sent to outside reviewers for evaluation. The review process generally takes four to six months. If a manuscript is not accepted for publication, it will be returned only if it is accompanied by a self-addressed stamp envelope.
Manuscripts should be original scholarship and not previously published.
If a manuscript is accepted for publication, the author(s) must submit (1) a paper copy of the final manuscript, (2) a version of the manuscript on disk in Microsoft Word format, (3) a 100-word or less abstract, and (4) a brief contributor's noted. Please identify the digital version version by author's last name, then file name Example: Jones, Peter Pan.
Permissions for Copyrighted Material. The author must secure any necessary permissions for copyrighted material for printed and electronic repoduction. This may be necessary for artwork that accompanies the submission. Permission fees are the responsibility of the author.
