About the journal
Aims and Scope

Archaeological Prospection is an interdisciplinary journal, intended to:

  • Inform archaeologists, environmental scientists, site developers, local authorities and regional environmental agencies about the wide range of scientific techniques available for the study of the near-surface environment.

  • Promote international collaboration amongst practitioners of prospection techniques.

  • Encourage discussion of field procedures, data presentation and interpretation of a wide range of survey methods and promote multi-technique comparisons, thus enhancing scientific collaboration.

  • Promote procedures and investigations for the safeguard of the historical and environmental cultural heritage.

  • Disseminate information about new (or newly applied) prospecting techniques.

  • Provide reviews of relevant techniques and applications.

  • Provide a forum for the discussion of best practice in shallow depth investigation of archaeological and environmental landscapes.

  • Encourage risk analysis studies to evaluate the economics of archaeological and environmental investigations.

Scope of the Journal

  • The scope of the Journal will be international, covering urban, rural and marine environments and the full range of underlying geology.

  • The Journal will contain articles relating to the use of a wide range of propecting techniques, including remote sensing (airborne and satellite), geophysical (e.g. resistivity, magnetometry) and geochemical (e.g. organic markers, soil phosphate). Reports and field evaluations of new techniques will be welcomed.

  • Contributions will be encouraged on the application of relevant software, including G.I.S. analysis, to the data derived from prospection techniques and cartographic analysis of early maps.

  • Reports on integrated site evaluations and follow-up site investigations will be particularly encouraged.

  • The Journal will welcome contributions, in the form of short (field) reports, on the application of prospection techniques in support of comprehensive land-use studies.

  • The Journal will, as appropriate, contain book reviews, conference and meeting reviews, and software evaluation.

  • All papers will be subjected to peer review.

Instructions to Authors

For Authors

Instructions to Authors

Initial Manuscript Submission. Submit four copies of the manuscript (including copies of tables and illustrations) plus the electronic version to: Sue Gaffney, Editorial Assistant, Archaeological Prospection, Remote Vision Research, Sunny Leigh, 17 Cliffe Lane, Thornton, Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD13 3DX, UK sue.gaffney@btinternet.com

Authors must also supply:

  • an electronic copy of the final version (see section below),
  • a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and
  • permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form. Permission grants should cover all territories and editions and in all media of expression and languages. Permission grants should be submitted with the manuscript.

Submission of a manuscript will be held to imply that it contains original unpublished work and is not being submitted for publication elsewhere at the same time. Submitted material will not be returned to the author, unless specifically requested.

Electronic submission. The electronic copy of the final, revised manuscript must be sent to the Editor together with the paper copy. Disks should be PC or Mac formatted; write on the disk the software package used, the name of the author and the name of the journal. We are able to use most word processing packages, but prefer Word or WordPerfect.

Illustrations must be submitted in electronic format where possible. Save each figure as a separate file, in TIFF or EPS format preferably, and include the source file. Write on the disk the software package used to create them; we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel or Powerpoint.

Manuscript style. The language of the journal is English. All submissions including book reviews must have a title, be printed on one side of the paper, be double-line spaced and have a margin of 3cm all round. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, and not be incorporated into the text.

  • The title page must list the full title, short title and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including email, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.
  • Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).
  • Supply an abstract of up to 300 words for all articles (except book reviews). An abstract is a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work.
  • Include up to six keywords that describe your paper for indexing purposes.

Reference style. References should be quoted in the text as name and year within brackets and listed at the end of the paper in in alphabetical order. Where reference is made to more than one work by the same author published in the same year, identify each citation in the text as follows: (Collins, 1998a), (Collins, 1998b). Where three or more authors are listed in the reference list, please cite in the text as (Collins et al., 1998).

All references must be complete and accurate. Where possible the DOI for the reference should be included at the end of the reference. Online citations should include date of access. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:
Linford NT. 2004. From hypocaust to hyperbola: ground-penetrating radar surveys over mainly Roman remains in the UK. Archaeological Prospection 11(4): 237-246. DOI: 10.1002/arp.238
Grinsell LB. 1953. The Ancient Burial Mounds of England. Methuen & Co Ltd; London.

Illustrations. Supply each illustration on a separate sheet, with the lead author's name and the figure number, with the top of the figure indicated, on the reverse. Supply original photographs; photocopies or previously printed material will not be used. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies). Tints are not acceptable; lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Electronic versions of the artwork should be supplied at the intended size for printing. More detailed artwork guidelines are also available.

The cost of printing colour illustrations in the journal will be charged to the author. If colour illustrations are supplied electronically in either TIFF or EPS format, they may be used in the PDF of the article at no cost to the author, even if this illustration was printed in black and white in the journal. The PDF will appear on the Wiley InterScience site.

Short Reports. These provide a means for the rapid circulation of information on activities such as recent fieldwork, hardware and software developments, earlier work reappraisals and related interdisciplinary topics. To this end they should be of no more than six pages in length including bibliography and figures. They receive special editorial handling so as to lead to publication within six months of submission. It is essential, therefore, that papers are submitted in good English with bibliographies in the approved form and accurately annotated figures in monochrome only. Submissions not following these criteria will not be accepted for rapid circulation.

Copyright. To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in each volume of Archaeological Prospection.Copies may also be may be printed from this website, or obtained from the journal editor or publisher.

Further Information. Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. 25 complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors.
