About the journal Aims and Scope
In recent years the Arabian peninsula has emerged as one of the major new frontiers of archaeological research in the Old World. Arabian Archaeology and Epigraphy is a forum for the publication of studies in the archaeology, epigraphy, numismatics, and early history of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
Both original articles and short communications in English, French, and German are published, ranging in time from prehistory to the Islamic era. In addition, studies touching on different parts of the region and their relations with neighbouring areas such as Africa, the Levant, Mesopotamia, Iran, and the Indus Valley are invited. Studies pertaining more directly to these areas, however, will only be considered if the link to the Arabian peninsula is clear and of central importance.
Contributions concerned with inscriptions from the Arabian peninsula, whether recorded in the field or housed in public and private collections around the world, will also be welcomed. Review articles will appear periodically.
Arabian Archaeology and Epigraphy is essential reading for all archaeologists, historians, philologists, and numismatists concerned with the ancient Near East. It is of interest to students of classical antiquity, Egyptology, and south Asian archaeology. We hope that the articles published in this journal will enrich our understanding of Arabia from the period of its earliest human occupation to the Middle Ages, and that existence of a forum for studies on the Arabian peninsula will give added impetus to research in this field.
Instructions to Authors Author Guidelines
Articles may be submitted in English, French, or German, and should be accompanied by a short abstract in English.

Authors submitting a paper do so on the understanding that the work has not been published before, is not being considered for publication elsewhere and has been read and approved by all authors. The submission of the manuscript by the authors means that the authors automatically agree to assign exclusive copyright to Munksgaard International Publishers if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication. The work shall not be published elsewhere in any language without the written consent of the publisher. The articles published in this journal are protected by copyright, which covers translation rights and the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute all of the articles printed in the journal. No material published in the journal may be stored on microfilm or videocassettes or in electronic databases and the like or reproduced photographically without the prior written permission of Blackwell Munksgaard.
Manuscripts should be typewritten (double-spaced, on one side of the paper) on ISO A4 paper with 4 cm margins. Indicate italics with single underlining, boldface with double underlining. To facilitate the handling of manuscripts, texts should be submitted, whenever possible, in machine-readable form and accompanied by a diskette containing an exact copy of the manuscript and figures in a separate file (TIFF, EPS or PDF). The software used, the program version number, as well as the format of the diskette, should be clearly marked. The title should be given on a separate sheet, with the names of the author(s) and the institution(s) to which they are affiliated. Contributors are asked to use the following scheme of transliteration of Arabic:
Epigraphic North and South Arabian should follow the system for Arabic above except that g should be used instead of g^, and the s1, s2, s3 notation is preferred for the nonemphatic unvoiced sibilants. North West Semitic languages should be transliterated according to the ASOR system [see BASOR 222 (1976):82]. When the letters t, d, h are italicized, the letter in the text should be ringed and a note made in the margin indicating 'italic.underline'.
Any graphs, line-drawings, or halftones should be referred to as Figures in the text. Please mark figure cues in the margin, indicating the approximate position of each by writing, for example, Fig. 1, and circling it. Figure captions should be listed on a separate page of text at the end of the manuscript. All figures should be clearly identified on the back. Any colour illustration must be paid for by the author. Current rates will be quoted by the publisher on application. Original transparencies plus two sets of colour prints should be submitted.
Tables should be typed on separate sheets of paper, and numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. Their approximate position in the text should be indicated by a cue written and circled in the margin. References should be given as end notes following the Vancouver system, not as footnotes or text notes as in the Harvard system. References in the text should thus be indicated only by an Arabic numeral in parentheses. A full list of references should appear at the end of the text (double-spaced). Here, full publication details should appear the first time a work is cited. In subsequent citations of a work already cited, do not use 'ibid.', 'op. cit.', or 'loc. cit.' Give only the surname, an abbreviated title, and page number. In the interests of brevity, authors should abbreviate the titles of journals according to the international list of periodical title word abbreviations (ISO 833). Other abbreviations should be written out at first mention.

References in Articles There are several software packages available to help authors manage and format the references and footnotes in their journal article. We recommend the use of a software tool such as EndNote or Reference Manager for reference management and formatting.
EndNote reference styles can be searched for here: http://www.endnote.com/support/enstyles.asp
Reference Manager reference styles can be searched for here: http://www.refman.com/support/rmstyles.asp
Proofs should be sent to the author for careful checking and correction. Changes must be kept to a minimum, and authors will be charged if they make extensive alterations. Proofs should be returned to the publisher as quickly as possible to ensure that the journal appears on time. Additional offprints can be ordered on the offprint form accompanying the proof. The journal is responsible neither for loss or damage to mailed manuscripts nor for the opinions of contributors.
Exclusive Licence Form Authors will be required to sign an Exclusive Licence Form (ELF) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the ELF is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. Please note that signature of the Exclusive Licence Form does not affect ownership of copyright in the material. (Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned). After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various media/circumstances (please see the form for further details). To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office. Alternatively, authors may like to download a copy of the form.
Services for Authors Authors writing in English and for whom English is a second language may choose to have their manuscript professionally edited before submission or during the review process. You can find a list of suppliers of editing services here.
Author Services
NEW: Online production tracking is now available for articles through Blackwell's Author Services. Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production so they do not need to contact the Production Editor to check on progress. Visit www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.
