About the journal
Journal of Mediterranean Archaeology is the only journal currently published that deals with the entire multicultural world of Mediterranean archaeology. The journal publishes material that deals with, amongst others, the social, politicoeconomic and ideological aspects of local or regional production and development, and of social interaction and change in the Mediterranean. We also encourage contributions dealing with contemporary approaches to gender, agency, identity and landscape, and we welcome material that covers both the theoretical implications and methodological assumptions that can be extrapolated from the relevant archaeological data. In terms of its temporal scope, JMA welcomes manuscripts from any period of Mediterranean prehistory and history, from the Palaeolithic to the Early Modern. The geographical focus of JMA is the islands within, and the lands or regions that border the Mediterranean Sea, from Gibraltar and the Iberian Peninsula in the west, to the Jordan Valley and Egypt in the east; from the mountain chains that fringe the diverse coastal plains of northern Mediterranean to the Atlas Mountains of the Maghreb and the Saharan desert cultures that impact on the Mediterranean's southern shores.
Instructions to Authors The JOURNAL OF MEDITERRANEAN STUDIES welcomes the submission of papers of up to 8,000 words on any branch of Mediterranean Studies that deals with the history, cultures and societies that border the Mediterranean Sea. This includes social anthropology, archaeology, history, literature, popular art, etc. Three copies of papers should be submitted. Submissions are considered for publication on the understanding that the author offers JMS an exclusive option to publish and that the paper is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. It is the responsibility of the author to obtain permission for using any previously published material. Requests for permission to reproduce articles or parts of articles from JMS should be directed to the General Editor of the Journal. Permission is not normally granted until one year has elapsed since the date of publication in JMS, although permission to translate into other languages is normally granted immediately. To facilitate the efficient consideration and handling of papers the following considerations should be observed: In the first instance, manuscripts should be emailed to the Chairman, Editorial Working Group (paul.clough@um.edu.mt) and Administrator, Journal of Mediterranean Studies (tita.bonnici@mus.com.mt). In addition any manuscripts containing maps, diagrams and photographs should be sent in three (3) hard copies and diskette to Ms. Tita Bonnici, Malta University Publishers Ltd., University Campus, Msida MSD2080 Malta. Manuscripts should be typed double-lined on A4 paper with ample margins. Notes and references should also be double spaced on separate pages at the end of the article. Acknowledgements, credits, etc. should form an asterisked unnumbered note at the end of the text. Separate sections in articles should have a text sub-title or subheading not a number. Bibliographic references should be cited in the text by the authors last name, date of publication and page, e.g. (Campbell 1964:106), or if the authors name is mentioned in the text by the date and page reference only e.g. (1964:106). Entries in the references (i.e. bibliography) should be in alphabetical order of authors and should include the following: name and initials of author(s), date, title and (for books) place of publication, name of publisher. For articles the following should be included in the following order: name of journal in full (or abbreviated according to the World List of Scientific Periodicals), volume number (Arabic numbers to be used throughout) and pagination. Examples are: Campbell, J.K. 1964. Honour, family and patronage, a study of the institutions and moral values in a Greek mountain community. Oxford: Claredon Press. Herzefeld, M. 1984. The Horns of the Mediterraneanist dilemma. American Ehtnologist 11:439-454. Articles or chapters in collective works edited by an individual should be entered in the following way: Caro Baroja, J. 1963. The city and the country. Reflections on some ancient common places. In Mediterranean Countrymen (ed.) J. Pitt-Rivers, Paris:Mouton 27-40. To avoid confusion paragraphs must be indented rather than separated by a blank line. Single quotation marks should be used for quotations. Quotations of more than two sentences should be indented. Foreign words, i.e. words in a language other that that being used as the main language of the article should be italicised or underlined (except proper names). Quotations in language of the article are accepted as long as they are germane to the argument. In the case of a script other than Latin script (e.g. Greek, Arabic), an accompanying translation must be submitted, side by side. Non Latin texts must be typed and clearly legible to avoid confusion at the printers. Tables, figures and other illustrations including photographs should be on separate sheets, numbered and titled. Maps, diagrams and text figures must be drawn in black waterproof ink and printed double size on glossy paper. Each article should contain an abstract of 100-150 words. Page proof of articles will be sent to authors, who must return them before the date indicated. When proofs are not received in time the Editors own corrected proofs will be sent to the printers. Alterations at proof stage are strongly discouraged and will only be accepted at the discretion of the General Editor. Authors receive 25 free offprints of articles and one copy of the journal. Additional copies of offprints can be supplied at cost price and must be ordered and paid for when the corrected proofs are returned. Authors also have the right to purchase copies of the volume in which their article appears at half the current subscription price. JMS also accepts the submission of articles on diskette, which must also be accompanied by three copies of the manuscript. Prefer Apple Mac format but accept the following: Microsoft Word Word Perfect 4.2 Word Perfect 5.0 Word Perfect 5.1 Word Perfect (WPG) Writers are advised that peer review will be slower than if the paper were submitted by e-mail.
