About the journal

Journal of Maritime Archaeology is the first international journal to address all aspects of maritime archaeology, both terrestrial and underwater. It encompasses theory and practice relating to landscape, structure, sites and issues of heritage management.

Journal of Maritime Archaeology provides a conduit for maritime approaches reaching across archaeology and related disciplines such as cultural geography, history, ethnography, oceanography and anthropology. In so doing the journal addresses all aspects of the human past in maritime environments both in historical times and remote prehistory.

Rated 'A' in the European Reference Index for the Humanities (ERIH)

Journal of Maritime Archaeology is rated 'A' in the ERIH, a new reference index that aims to help evenly access the scientific quality of Humanities research output. For more information visit http://www.esf.org/research-areas/humanities/activities/research-infrastructures.html

Instructions to Authors

Manuscript Submission

Manuscripts and Editorial Inquiries should be submitted to the Editor:

Jon Adams

Centre for Maritime Archaeology

University of Southampton

Highfield SO17 1BJ

UK

jjra@soton.ac.uk

It is strongly recommended that prospective authors contact the Editor before beginning to write, to ensure there is no significant overlap with other manuscripts in progress.

Publication Policies

Submission is a representation that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. A statement transferring copyright from the authors (or their employers, if they hold the copyright) to Springer Science+Business Media LLC will be required before the manuscript can be accepted for publication. The Editors will supply the necessary forms for this transfer. Such a written transfer of copyright, which previously was assumed to be implicit in the act of submitting a manuscript, is necessary under the U.S. Copyright Law in order for the publisher to carry through the dissemination of research results and reviews as widely and effectively as possible.

Manuscript Style

Type double−spaced on one side of 8 ??11 inch white paper using generous margins on all sides, and submit the original and two copies (including, where possible, copies of all illustrations and tables). All copies must be dark, sharp, and clear. If manuscripts are submitted electronically, the word−processing program used should be specified.

PLEASE INCLUDE ALL FIGURES AND TABLES WITH SUBMITTED MANUSCRIPT

Order the elements comprising the manuscript as follows:

 title page

Author contact info

 abstract

 key words

text

 appendix

acknowledgments

references

bibliography

tables

and figure−caption list.

Acknowledgements

All acknowledgments (including those for grant and financial support) should be typed in one paragraph on a separate page that directly precedes the References Cited section. Manuscripts should generally be 20?5 (double−spaced) text pages in length.

Title Page

A title page is to be provided and should include the title of the article, author's name (no degrees), author's affiliation, and suggested running head. The affiliation should comprise the department, institution (usually university or company), city, and state (or nation) and should be typed as a footnote to the author's name. The suggested running head should be less than 80 characters (including spaces) and should comprise the article title or an abbreviated version thereof. For office purposes, the title page should include the complete mailing address and telephone number of the one author designated to review proofs.

Author Contact Info:

All manuscripts submitted should contain complete, correct information for the main author (proof recipient). This includes name, address, email, phone, and fax (optional).

Abstract

An abstract is to be provided, preferably no longer than 50?00 words. Please note that, if the article is accepted, this abstract will be sent for translation immediately upon acceptance, and will not be available for future corrections. Please submit abstract in finalized form.

Keywords

A list of 4 key words is to be provided directly below the abstract. Key words should express the precise content of the manuscript, as they are used for indexing purposes.

References

List references alphabetically at the end of the paper in a section entitled References Cited and refer to them in the text by name and year in parentheses. Where there are three or more authors, only the first author's name is given in the text, followed by et al.

References should include (in this order):

last names and initials of all authors

year published

title of article

name of publication

volume number

and inclusive pages

The style and punctuation of the references should conform to that used in the journal ?illustrated by the following examples:

Journal Article

Andrews, A. P. 1993. Late Postclassic lowland Maya archaeology. Journal of World Prehistory 7: 35−−69.

 Book

Sinopoli, C. M. 1991. Approaches to Archaeological Ceramics, Plenum Press, New York.

Contribution to a Book

O'Connell, J. F., Hawkes, K., and Jones, N. B. 1991. Distribution of refuse−producing activities at Hadza residential base camps: Implications for analyses of archaeological site structure. In Kroll, E. M., and Price, T. D. (eds.), The Interpretation of Archaeological Spatial Patterning, Plenum Press, New York, pp. 61−−76.

After References Cited, include a separate section entitled Bibliography of Recent Literature. Bibliography entries should not be cited in the text (and therefore not appear in the References Cited). List entries alphabetically, and follow the same style as the examples above.

Footnotes

Footnotes should be avoided. When their use is absolutely necessary, footnotes should be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals and should be typed at the bottom of the page to which they refer. Place a line above the footnote, so that it is set off from the text. Use the appropriate superscript numeral for citation in the text.

Illustration Style

Illustrations (photographs, drawings, diagrams, and charts) are to be numbered in one consecutive series of Arabic numerals. The captions for illustrations should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. All illustrations must be complete and final, i.e., camera−ready. Photographs should be large, glossy prints, showing high contrast. Drawings should be prepared with india ink. Either the original drawings or high−quality photographic prints are acceptable. Each numbered figure must be on a separate sheet of sturdy paper not exceeding 8 ??11 inches in size. Identify figures on the back with author's name and number of the illustration. Electronic artwork submitted on disk should be in the TIFF or EPS format (1200 dpi for line and 300 dpi for half−tones and gray−scale art). Color art should be in the CYMK color space. Artwork should be on a separate disk from the text, and hard copy must accompany the disk.

Tables should be numbered (with Roman numerals) and referred to by number in the text. Each table should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. Center the title above the table, and type explanatory footnotes (indicated by superscript lowercase letters) below the table.

Page Charges

The journal makes no page charges. Reprints are available to authors, and order forms with the current price schedule are sent with proofs.

Springer Open Choice

In addition to the normal publication process (whereby an article is submitted to the journal and access to that article is granted to customers who have purchased a subscription), Springer now provides an alternative publishing option: Springer Open Choice. A Springer Open Choice article receives all the benefits of a regular subscription−based article, but in addition is made available publicly through Springers online platform SpringerLink. To publish via Springer Open Choice, upon acceptance please visit the link below to complete the relevant order form and provide the required payment information. Payment must be received in full before publication or articles will publish as regular subscription−model articles. We regret that Springer Open Choice cannot be ordered for published articles
