About the journal

Aims & Scope

Studia Neophilologica publishes articles on English, German and the Romance languages and literatures, and reviews of books in these fields.

The contributions represent both historically oriented research and synchronic and structural studies, and the journal is not limited to any particular linguistic or literary period. Many articles concern methodological questions within the fields of general linguistics and literary theory. The majority of the contributions, however, investigate specific linguistic problems or deal with specific literary texts.

The journal thus covers a wide and diversified field in its attempt to mirror the problems that concern today's researchers in the fields of English, German and Romance studies.

Contributions are invited from scholars all over the world. Although a certain preference is accorded to Scandinavian authors, there has generally been room for valuable contributions from other parts of the world, and the journal can count among its contributors a large number of distinguished scholars from many different countries.

Studia Neophilologica was founded in 1928 by R.E. Zachrisson. It is published for the association F鰎eningen f鰎 Studia Neophilologica, Uppsala.

Instructions to Authors

Instructions for Authors:

***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

The manuscript should be typed clearly, and double-spaced. Passages to be printed in smaller type are no exception to this rule; they should be marked as such in the margin. Smaller type for quotations, tabular matter and the like should be avoided if they can easily be incorporated into the main text -- e.g. quotations no longer than, say, three or four lines.

Electronic Manuscripts
The editors encourage submissions on diskette to facilitate rapid accessibility of your work to the readers. The electronic files and the printout must be identical. Cost of changes to the electronic manuscript may be charged to the author(s). The diskette should be labeled with your name and the name of the computer platform and version of the word processing system you have used. Please observe that we can receive files from any word processing system; however, styled Microsoft Word files are preferred. Halftones and colour photos should be included separately.

Please use these simple guidelines when preparing your electronic manuscript:

  1. Please be consistent. The same elements should be keyed in exactly the same way throughout the manuscript.
  2. Do not break words at the end of lines. Use a hyphen only to hyphenate compound words.
  3. Enter only one space after the full-stop at the end of a sentence.
  4. When emphasising words, please use the italic feature of your word processor software.
  5. Do not justify your text; use a ragged right-hand margin.
  6. Use a double hyphen (--) to indicate a dash in text.
  7. Do not use the lowercase l for 1 (one) or the uppercase O for 0 (zero).
  8. The space bar should only be used as a word separator. Use TAB when indenting paragraphs or separating columns in tables.
  9. Please keep graphic elements (e.g. images) as separate files (e.g. EPS- or TIFF-files). Originals of good quality can also be submitted as usual.

Please print out the submittal form, fill it out and send it together with your diskette and printed copies to the editorial office:

Professor Gernot Müller
Uppsala University, Dept of Modern Languages, Box 636, SE-751 26 Uppsala, Sweden

Notes should also be typed double-spaced, and on separate sheets. In view of printing costs, notes should be cut down to a minimum, e.g. by incorporating, parenthetically or otherwise, part of potential note material into the text.

References. For notes, the following system is recommended:
1 Ernst R. Curtius, Europäische Literatur and lateinisches Mittelalter. Bern, 31961, p. 123 [or: 3rd ed., 1961, pp. 123-27].
2 George Bedell, "The arguments about deep structure", Language 50, 1974, p. 427 [or, when referring to an article in its entirety, pp. 423-45].

Please note the use of italics (marked by underlining) for titles of books and journals, as against double quotes for articles, etc. In the running text, the same principles apply correspondingly .

Special word forms should be rendered in italics, including Latin words from which later forms are derived, e.g. faire facere. Letter spacing- like this- should be avoided. As a consequence, italics should also be used for emphasis.

Abbreviations should not be used unless they have wide currency. Special abbreviations may be introduced as long as they are clearly explained.

Quotation marks. For quotations use double quotes ('thus"), for quotations within quotations single quotes ('thus'). For translations of words use single quotes, e.g. faire 'make'. The printer will replace your typewritten " and ' by the signs used in the language of your article.

Clarity and consistency are most important. Some examples:
1. The first line of each paragraph should be indented. This will, for example, help the printer to identify a new paragraph at the beginning of a new page.
2. Parenthetic 'dashes" should be indicated by two typewritten hyphens as against one hyphen for compounds. To avoid confusion between word divisions and hyphenated compounds, words should not be divided at the end of lines.

PROOFS. For imperative economic reasons, text alterations (as against corrections of misprints) must be paid by the author.

Proofs and manuscripts should be returned to the appropriate editor.
