We are pleased to present information about the Department’s research and education programs as well as our facilities and surroundings.
The mission of the Department is to combine internationally recognized research programs with a commitment to the very best in undergraduate and graduate education. The department is impressively interdisciplinary with faculty research spanning areas from the characterization of global, ecosystem biology to the biophysics of energy production and utilization. This allows us to tackle important questions in biology from an environment that encourages discussion and collaboration across different disciplines. From such strength we have built outstanding research and educational programs in Ecology and Evolution, Computational Biology, the Molecular Basis of Behavior, Microbial Biology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology and Plant Science that are available for undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral scientists.
Recognizing the revolution that is occurring in the Life Sciences, particularly in applying genomic approaches to diverse and important biological problems, The School of Arts and Sciences has selected Biology as one of six departments critical to its development over the next five years. This support has helped establish the Genomics Institute at the University, headed by Professor David Roos of our department, and resulted in the commitment to construct a new Life Sciences building that will house an interdisciplinary grouping of Biology, Genomics and Psychology faculty and students.
