About the journal The American Sociological Review is the flagship journal of the American Sociological Association (ASA). The ASA founded this journal in 1936 (volume 1) with the mission to publish original works of interest to the sociology discipline in general, new theoretical developments, results of research that advance our understanding of fundamental social processes, and important methodological innovations. All areas of sociology are welcome in the American Sociological Review. Emphasis is on exceptional quality and general interest. The American Sociological Review does not include book reviews. The ASA publishes the American Sociological Review bimonthly (February, April, June, August, October, December).

For more detailed information, see the ASA Style Guide, which can be downloaded free of charge by ASA members on the ASA Members Only page. For more information on manuscript format, see Notice to Contributors (PDF format). Before submitting manuscript to ASR, see the Submission Checklist.
Preparation of Manuscript: For more in-depth details of our guidelines for preparation of a manuscript, see the Preparation Checklist for ASR Manuscripts (PDF format).
Permission: The author is responsible for securing permission to reproduce all copyrighted figures or materials for printing in ASR before they are published by ASR. A copy of the written permission must be included with the manuscript submission. ASR cannot and will not use anything for which an author has not obtained written permission (and provided our office with a copy of that written permission). See also the ASA Reprint Permissions page for information regarding permission to reprint ASR materials in other publications.
Figures, Tables, and Graphic File Requirements: To see details of electronic file submission requirements for figures and tables, please click here.
Electronic Blinded Peer Review Process: To maintain a timely review process, we e-mail a blinded read-only PDF file version of the manuscript to a reviewer. For more complete information, please click here to view the ASR Electronic Review Process page.
Acknowledgment of Manuscript Receipt: ASR will acknowledge the receipt of your manuscript if you provide your e-mail address. Manuscripts are not returned after review. In your cover letter, you may recommend specific reviewers (or identify individuals that ASR should not use). Do not recommend colleagues, collaborators, or friends. ASR may choose to disregard your recommendation.
Ethics of Manuscript Submission: Submission of a manuscript to another professional journal while it is under review by the ASR is regarded by the ASA as unethical. Significant findings or contributions that have already appeared (or will appear) elsewhere must be clearly identified. All persons who publish in ASA journals are required to abide by ASA guidelines and ethics codes regarding plagiarism and all other issues.
