About the journal

The Journal of General Psychology publishes human and animal research reflecting various methodological approaches in all areas of experimental psychology. It covers traditional topics such as physiological and comparative psychology, sensation, perception, learning, and motivation, as well as more diverse topics such as cognition, memory, language, aging, and substance abuse, or mathematical, statistical, methodological, and other theoretical investigations. The journal especially features studies that establish functional relationships, involve a series of integrated experiments, or contribute to the development of new theoretical insights or practical applications.

Instructions to Authors

The Journal of General Psychology is devoted to experimental, physiological, and comparative psychology. Preference is given to manuscripts that establish functional relationships, involve a series of integrated studies, or contribute to the development of new theoretical insights. Human and animal studies and mathematical and other theoretical investigations are appropriate. Technological reports of significance to these areas are welcome. Studies of monograph length in areas appropriate to this journal would be welcomed by Genetic, Social, and General Psychology Monographs.
Print all manuscripts on heavy typewriter paper, 8 1/2 x 11 in. (22×28 cm), double space all lines, and leave 1.5in. (4-cm) margins on each side for editorial work. Submit the original and three copies. Retain a copy for proofing. Do not fold manuscripts. Enclose a submission letter, with a statement that the manuscript is not under concurrent consideration elsewhere. Each manuscript is reviewed by at least three readers, a process requiring about two weeks.

Manuscripts must adhere to the conventions of style and format described in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed., 2001). The checklist on pp. 379 - 382 of the manual is especially helpful in preparing manuscripts for submission. Include a separate title page that lists the departmental affiliations of all authors. Type the author identification notes on a separate page; include a complete mailing address for reprint requests. Glossy prints must be supplied for all figures once the manuscript is accepted for publication. Await acceptance before sending disks; instructions for preparing disks will be included in the acceptance letter.

The accepted manuscript should be submitted as a double space Word file with minimal formatting in Times or Times New Roman. Do not use word-processing styles, forced section breaks, or automatic footnotes. Electronic versions of figures as tiff or eps files or as original files in Excel, Illustrator, or PhotoShop are required for accepted manuscripts.

Each author receives two complimentary copies of the issue in which his or her article appears and permission to reproduce additional copies of that article. Contributors may order reprints at their own expense through Heldref Publications.

ANDREA M. KARKOWSKI

Beginning with this October 2005 issue, the three of us will share the responsibilities of Executive Editor of The Journal of General Psychology. The move from one to three Executive Editors is consistent with Heldref Publications' practice for other psychology journals and should benefit both authors and readers. There are a number of exciting changes to The Journal of General Psychology on the horizon, such as making the journal an important publishing outlet for articles that contribute to psychology in the 21st century, streamlining and improving the submission process, and raising the standards of the journal. We owe F. Richard Ferraro much gratitude for laying the foundation for these changes during his tenure as Executive Editor. Among his most notable contributions, Dr. Ferraro increased the number of consulting editors for the journal, and assisted many authors and reviewers in their work. We thank him for his commitment to the Journal of General Psychology, and we strive to accomplish as much during our tenure.

Before outlining the vision for the journal, we would like to provide some background information about the journal and it publisher, Heldref Publications. As an outgrowth of the nonprofit foundation started in 1956 by Helen Dwight Reid, Heldref currently publishes 47 magazines and scholarly journals in a variety of disciplines including political science, history, the humanities, social science, health, and environmental studies. As one of the five psychology journals produced by Heldref, the Journal of General Psychology has wide appeal to a general audience, and it is this tradition that we would like to extend and enhance.

The mission of The Journal of General Psychology is to publish empirical research that speaks to a broad audience and that reflects the contemporary practice of scientific psychology. We envision publishing research that comes from a wide range of paradigms using diverse populations, including human and nonhuman participants and computer simulation. Authors from well established as well as emerging lines of research should consider the journal a viable publishing outlet for their work, and we issue a special invitation to young researchers who are just getting started to consider this journal as an outlet for their work.

Consistent with the vision to publish research from diverse areas, our own professional backgrounds represent a wide swath of experimental psychology. Andrea M. Karkowski is an associate professor of psychology at Capital University in Ohio. She earned her doctorate in learning and comparative psychology from the University of Montana and continues to do research in a number of different areas, including foraging and decision making, computational psychology, and sex and gender. Dr. Karkowski has reviewed manuscripts for the Journal for over 10 years, first as an ad hoc reviewer and later as a consulting editor. Paula Goolkasian is a professor of psychology and coordinator for the cognitive science academy at The University of North Carolina, Charlotte. She has been teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in psychology since receiving her PhD degree from Iowa State University in 1974. Her research interests are in the area of perception and attention with over 80 research articles and presentations at professional conferences. Janet Gibson is a professor of psychology and member of the linguistics concentration at Grinnell College. She completed her PhD in experimental psychology at Rice University in 1989. Her primary research interest is in implicit memory, but by teaching courses in decision making, cognitive psychology, and psychology of language, she and students conduct research projects across these domains. This breadth of experience should serve the journal well during our time as Executive Editors.

Other immediate and exciting changes to The Journal of General Psychology include moving from paper to electronic submission and review. Until an online submission process using ScholarOne is completed in 2007, we will rely on email for submissions and reviewing. Authors should note the new requirements for submitting manuscripts posted on the journal's Web site as well as on the front cover of this issue. We anticipate that electronic submissions and reviews will provide faster feedback to authors, online access to articles for reviewers, and will be more cost effective for Heldref Publications.

An important part of our job as editors will be working with authors and reviewers to improve the standards of The Journal of General Psychology. We expect that raising the quality of submissions and focused reviews will lead to wider readership among cognitive, behavioral, and social scientists and their students, and will result in improved citation rates.

Jason R. Alyesh is the newly appointed managing editor of The Journal of General Psychology. He is the primary contact for article submission and journal questions (gen@heldref.org). We invite you to work with us in making the journal better by considering the journal as an outlet for your work as well as offering to do some reviewing on an occasional basis. Don't forget to encourage your students to read the journal and to use it yourself as you prepare reading assignments for your instructional efforts. Let us know if we are meeting your expectations. We welcome your comments and hope that you share our enthusiasm for the future of the journal. We invite you to e-mail your suggestions and comments to
