Instructions to Authors

The Journal of Experimental Social Psychology is devoted to the publication of research and theory on social interaction and related phenomena, including attitudes, social cognition and motivation, interpersonal relationships, and intragroup and intergroup processes. The Journal does not specify appropriate topics for research, but rather seeks to publish significant work reflecting the entire breadth of the field of social psychology. It is anticipated that most published manuscripts will report results of conceptually based empirical research that advances social psychological theory. However, other types of papers, such as theoretical analyses, literature reviews, and methodological comments, are also encouraged if they contribute significantly to an understanding of social processes. It is expected that all empirical research submitted for consideration will have been conducted in a manner consistent with the American Psychological Association?s Ethical Principles in the Conduct of Research with Human Participants(1982).

Submission of Manuscripts

Manuscripts must be written in English and should be submitted in electronic form to jesp@psych.colorado.edu. PDF format is preferred but any standard word processing format is acceptable. Manuscripts may be submitted for either the Articles or the Reports section of the journal. Articles have no specific length limitation. Reports may be no longer than 5000 words of text, including footnotes, but excluding the abstract, references, tables, and figures. The reference list for a report is expected to include no more than 40 items. For manuscripts submitted to the Reports section, the word count, as indicated by any standard word processor, should be listed on the title page. There are no submission fees or page charges.

Original papers only will be considered. Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that the same work has not been published, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that its submission for publication has been approved by all of the authors and by the institution where the work was carried out; further, that any person cited as a source of personal communications has approved such citation. Written authorization may be required at the Editor?s discretion. Papers published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology represent the opinions of the author(s) and should not be construed to reflect the opinions of the Editor(s) and the Publisher.

Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to transfer copyright (for more information on copyright, seehttp://authors.elsevier.com). This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. A letter will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript. A form facilitating transfer of copyright will be provided after acceptance.

If material from other copyrighted works is included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: contact Elsevier Global Rights Department, P.O. Box 800, Oxford OX5 1DX, UK; phone: (+44) 1865 843830, fax: (+44) 1865 853333, e-mail: permissions@elsevier.com. Requests may also be completed online via the Elsevier home page (http://www.elsevier.com/locate/permissions).

Electronic Transmission of Accepted Manuscripts
Authors are requested to transmit the text and art of the manuscript to the Editor on computer disk after all revisions have been incorporated and the manuscript has been accepted for publication. Hard-copy printouts of the manuscript and art must also be supplied. The manuscript will be edited according to the style of the journal, and authors must read the proofs carefully.

Preparation of Manuscript

Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout on one side of 8.5 x 11-inch or A4 white paper. Manuscripts should be prepared in accord with the format and style specified in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, fifth edition. Pages should be numbered consecutively and organized as follows:

The Title Page (p. 1) should contain the article title, authors' names and complete affiliations, footnotes to the title, and the address for manuscript correspondence (including e-mail address and telephone and fax numbers).

The Abstract (p. 2) must be a single paragraph that summarizes the main findings of the paper in fewer than 150 words. After the abstract a list of up to 10keywords that will be useful for indexing or searching should be included.

References should be cited in the text as specified in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, fourth edition. Personal communications should be cited as such in the text and should not be included in the reference list.

Figures
Number figures consecutively with Arabic numerals. For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please seehttp://authors.elsevier.com/artwork.

Color Figures. Illustrations in color in the printed issue can be accepted only if the authors defray the cost. However, if together with your accepted article, you submit usable color figures, then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in color on the Web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether these illustrations are reproduced in color in the printed version. For color reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article. For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please seehttp://authors.elsevier.com/artwork.

Please note: Because of technical complications that can arise in converting color figures to "gray scale" (for the printed version should you not opt for color in print), please submit in addition usable black-and-white files corresponding to all the color illustrations.

Tables
Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text. Type each table double-spaced on a separate page, with a short descriptive title typed directly above and with essential footnotes below.

Preparation of Supplementary Material
Elsevier now accepts electronic supplementary material to support and enhance your scientific research. Supplementary files offer additional possibilities for publishing supporting applications, movies, animation sequences, high-resolution images, background datasets, sound clips, and more. Supplementary files supplied will be published online alongside the electronic version of your article in Elsevier Web products, including ScienceDirect (http://www.sciencedirect.com). To ensure that your submitted material is directly usable, please provide the data in one of our recommended file formats. Authors should submit the material in electronic format together with the article and supply a concise and descriptive caption for each file. Please note, however, that supplementary material will not appear in the printed journal. Files can be stored on 3?-inch diskette, ZIP disk, or CD (either MS-DOS or Macintosh). For more detailed instructions, please visit our Author Gateway athttp://authors.elsevier.com, click on "Artwork instructions," and then click on "Multimedia files."

Proofs
PDF proofs will be e-mailed to the corresponding author. To avoid delay in publication, only necessary changes should be made, and corrections should be returned promptly.

Reprints
Twenty-five (25) reprints will be provided free of charge. Additional reprints may be ordered.
